Spot on! Well expressed, Anonymous.

Listen if you are after a good reference write one for yourself!
As Nova was circling the pan I got the letter and some quality
company stationary. A hanko here and there and Bob's you
father's brother. Best gosh darn reference I have ever had. And
the best thing of all is there is no one to verify it.

The same will be true once Geos and crumbled!

Raid the stationary cupboard today!

There are GEOS teachers living in non-Leo Palace apartments right now. Only a few but it happens when a Leo Palace can't be found

@17:32 A lot of the comments on that message board are very negative, but where's the proof that they are actually GEOS students? And if they really are, then why the hell would they keep studying if their teachers were so awful? Would anyone keep taking lessons from a stupid, ugly, weird or whatever teacher?

You have a very low opinion of Japanese people. A lot of GEOS students are highly educated intelligent individuals, and they are still satisfied with the lessons they receive.

Sure, many students are "educated" in the sense that they have actually stepped inside a lecture hall, but most of my students are just plain fucking dumb. Example, we needed to come up with the names of 5 famous non-Japs for a production. How fucking hard can it be? Why does it take my students 5 minutes? OK, maybe they're not into movies or music and shit like that. So on the next lesson, we warm up with a ball toss game using country names. Don't run out of ideas after 4 turns then act all fucking dumbfounded when I say "Algeria" or "Norway". Seriously, it's like pulling teeth... some of them are just fucking plain dumb. I have one student who pretends she is short sighted, so she pulls her book up in front of her face so that I won't ask any questions. Let's say we are doing a quick 2 minute activity with a timer... she'll keep her head down and keep writing 5-6 minutes after the timer beeps and my asking her multiple times to put the fucking pen down, because it just isn't that important and I want to move on with the fucking lesson... for fucks sake...

Patience is a virtue. The moment you lose your patience with a student is the moment you stop being their teacher.

Commitment is a good thing, but being committed to a company like GEOS? Seriously, if you sign a new contract with them, think about it - do you REALLY want to be committed to company like GEOS for another year?

You've made a commitment to the company and more importantly to your students. Don't any of you feel any responsibility to finish your contract at all?

I don't think there's anything wrong with quitting your contract, especially if a better opportunity presents itself. It's common sense - you have to look after yourself first and foremost when you're working for dodgy outfits like GEOS, companies that will protect their own interests first and foremost, and won't hesitate to screw you, all the other teachers, and the students, up the rear end in order to achieve that (just look at what's happened in Aus).

I wouldn't go relying on a company like GEOS for your long-term future.

I dont think Geos is replacing teachers that leave and I think that something will happen within ther next 4 weeks. Some teachers are being spread around up to 3 schools. There are only so many subs to go around and it wouldnt suprise me if JETs started teaching classes that NETS should be teaching. Just a feeling I a have, only 8 days to go for me and Im fucken out of that shit whole and you knbow what I dont even give a rats ass if they find out I post on here.

Thanks anonymous, I didn't know about kuchikomi. It looks interesting. There sure is a lot of speculation about the financial state of the company on there. I'm just puzzled about where it says that the reviewers say negative things about the teachers. Overall they get high marks--the 講師 corner of the review pentagon is at 4/5, higher than any other corner. The reviews specifically about teachers (http://search.knowledgecommunication.jp/review/s1050/c3/) are few but positive. 今の講師の方は一人ひとりに丁寧に親身にレッスンをしてくれるので、大満足です。 Which translates to "The teacher this time gave a polite and courteous [the reviewer even said it twice!] lesson to me, so I am greatly satisfied." Or "体験時の講師の方はとても優秀で教え方もうまく、発音の間違いなど指摘して頂けました。", "The demo lesson's teacher had an excellent way of teaching, and pointed out pronunciation errors well to me." And so on. The most negative comment was that the teacher was 真面目--majime--which is hardly an insult.

After looking through a few pages I fail to find anything saying anything negative about the teachers. They are hardly mentioned at all.

What was interesting was that one post, at 2010/02/23 09:04, was about this web site, and said that the foreign teachers "privately" (which the poster thought was funny) come here to be bitter about GEOS because of the trouble they are in. Someone who can read better than I can, please help out with my translation here if you are so inclined. Here is an excerpt:

その前からもかなり盛り上がってたみたいだけど、内輪で(笑)
外国人講師?からも恨まれてこんなブログまで作られて
ジオスは本当に盛り上がってるね。
http://www.letsjapan.org/blog
"Although there has been a lot of talk from before this, privately (haha) the foreign teachers? Also being bitter talk about GEOS a lot on a blog like this."

でも、今回の事件で本当の生徒さんもかなりここ見てると思うよ。
"But, I think that with this trouble, the actual students are really looking at it too."

マナーを守って盛り上がっていきましょ~。
"Let's watch our manners!"

Which might be a good idea.

And by the way, it's "receive." I before E except after C. For those who can read.

i before e except after c... apart from science, financier, conscience, and... uh... a whole bunch of others.....

Yeah anyone who wasnt born before 1930 knows that.

A reference from Geos type organisations are worthless and most people interviewing knows that. Just get a statement of service.

That's complete B.S. Years ago, I worked at Nova and returned back to my home country. I had no trouble at all finding a job and I did indeed put Nova on my CV. I also got a reference from them.

I should also add that the 7 or so people I've kept in contact with from Nova are all gainfully employed back in their home countries. Three work in education, two in IT, one in a bank and one runs their own business.

I doubt that you seriously believe that people with an "Eikaiwa" on their CV will not find a job again. More spin and B.S.

That is not what I was saying. I was saying that it is worthless because it is just some genric crap written by someone in head office whow doesnt know you from a brass razzoo.
Who wrote your Nova Reume, Tony Burn or Peter Logan? Had you ever met them?
So the whole process of references is a joke and not only in Eikaiwa.
You need to learn to read and comprehend what it means before going off on a tangent.

I also work in HR and I have to say a reference is a reference. I cant tell you how many times I have employed someone on the basis of a good reference. In the case of a depending position for an important client any gap even a small one is enough for me to reject you without even a meeting. The effect diminishes as you go down the ladder, but it never disappears.

I see a lot of talk about looking out for yourself and taking care of number one, but that isn't really what builds a successful career. You have to show a bit of loyalty to an employer because that is what all future employers look for whenever they have the luxury. Someone who is going to do right by them.

So will Geos mail references to all staff when they close down?
What do HR do in situations of bankruptcy?
Many people have blanks because of this so a person could be put on the bottom of the pile because of a comany that has bad business practices. There is no way I would be loyal if that was going to be the result. Look after yourself!!!! Get a statement of service!

That is not what I was saying. I was saying that it is worthless because it is just some genric crap written by someone in head office whow doesnt know you from a brass razzoo.

I think you mean "generic".

As another poster said, a reference is a reference and having to explain a gap in your work record is a far more difficult thing to do.

By the way, if it is so worthless why did I have no trouble finding another job? I’m not saying the Nova reference got me the job but it certainly didn’t hurt.

Here is to the poster who wanted to know about the derogatory statements made by GEOS students toward a drunk and dirty GEOS teacher. You have to dig a little deeper to find the gems. This post is great! I translated it for you. I posted this back on February 12th on LJ. This post is on page 15 on Kuchikomi as of March 4, 2009.

http://search.knowledgecommunication.jp/kuchikomi/s1050/#14506

The title of the post is Bad teachers posted Feb. 12th post number 0014506. I have posted other statements made on kuchikomi from GEOS students on here many times...you will just have to dig them out on LJ.
You better be able to read Japanese very well and not depend on an online translator t get the juice out of these posts. Get a Japanese friend or Japanese co-worker to translate for you. There is plenty of trash talk going on at Kuchikomi about GEOS teachers and j-staff. The positive messages you read on kuchikomi are obvious head office GEOS staff making spin. There are a few more Japanese message boards that trash talk GEOS as well. If I have time, I will post some more comments made by current and former GEOS students.

From my older post a few weeks ago:

Well, well...look what I found this morning. I found a post on kuchikomi about an alcoholic GEOS teacher on Feb. 12, 2009. Allow me to translate.

I was a GEOS student until last week. My last teacher was on the job for 4 months and frequently came to class drunk, wore dirty clothes and smelled awful. The students and myself complained to the manager several times but she ignored us.

What happened to the quality of GEOS teachers??

I was a student at GEOS for 7 years and in the past one year we had 3 teachers, which one of them lasted just one week.
I was in a World Passages class and as of November 2009 there were 7 students in the class, as of today we have all left and we all reuqested refunds
.

With the problems at Australia GEOS and GEOS Japan, I cannot trust anybody in the company.

The quality of GEOS teachers is in decline and the school managers are liars.

Wow!! Thats gotta hurt GEOS teachers!! Straight from a GEOS student who has had enough! It looks like the alcoholic/dirty teacher ran off the students in that World Passages class....7 refunds in 3 months!! Thats painful. Has GEOS stooped to a new low to hire scabs to relpace the once `professional` teachers at GEOS?? The stress getting you down GEOS teachers?? Feeling the heat?? Looks like it.

If you doubt my translation GEOS teachers, please ask your school manager to translate for you.

THere is a post on the 'sucking' thread that a lot of managers haven't been paid. Come on - some evidence please. So so so easy to say. Evidence needed!

I see a lot of talk about looking out for yourself and taking care of number one, but that isn't really what builds a successful career. You have to show a bit of loyalty to an employer because that is what all future employers look for whenever they have the luxury. Someone who is going to do right by them.

Loyalty is a good thing, I agree. But talking about loyalty in relation to eikaiwa and dispatch companies is ridiculous, as most of these places show absolutely no loyalty to their staff. It's a revolving door and loyalty doesn't come into it.

If you care about loyalty, for God's sake, don't work in eikaiwa or ALT dispatch!

Dear GEOS teacher. You got crap all over your face for not reading the Japanese post about the drunk GEOS teacher. Its DOES say
ワールド パッセージ = World Passages in the Japanese post.
If the class is titled World Pass or not that is not the responsibilty of the translator, its clearly the GEOS student who is confused.
Its also clear as day you cant read katakana or took the time to read the rea the Japanese post or visit the link provided, but thats expected from a lazy GEOS teacher. You live in Japan and you cant even read katakana, how sad is that???

So, the next time somebody comes on here and provides a translation service for the rest of us from a Japanese message board, take the time and read the Japanese post itself before you lash out and make a fool of yourself.
I have noticed recently how defensive GEOS teachers have been in defending their employment at GEOS. GEOS teachers lash out at anything that exposes the truth. A GEOS student wrote a post on kuchikomi and then a turd headed GEOS teacher comes on here and labels it a lie, but they cant even read Japanese!! Geezus.

If you have to dig for something, then it's probably not a common complaint. There are many kinds of student and teacher, and if you "dig a little deeper" on any company, eikaiwa or otherwise, you are bound to find dirt.

However, kudos to @16:35 for translating the comment (albeit so that he/she could spread a bit more negativity.)

You have to dig a little to find negative posts about GEOS teachers...but its quite common to find complaints about GEOS and student frustrations about j-staff and GEOS management on kuchikomi and other message boards.

Thanks 1635, that answered my question. I was a little confused when I checked that site and couldn't find anything bad about the teachers, but I only looked at a few pages. Interesting stuff... She certainly seemed angry. She even wrote all the いs in the -ている form verbs. Without giving away too much personal information I have no connection with GEOS, but I thought it was a pretty good company because one of the Japanese staff I worked with studied with them and said they were very good, and even recommended that I apply for a job there. He thought it was one of the better places to work. So I was surprised.

Yes, I saw that too.

I've anecdotal evidence too, but just that. I imagine if you check mixi you'll find something pretty quickly (I can't be bothered sorry). I'd be really surprised if they still weren't paid though as that poster said. Because surely that would have provoked manager walk-out...

Tell you what, maybe I can be bothered. I will have a look.

I'm jm japan and recently receive a job starting April. Reading these posts is really making me wonder if accepting the job was a wise move. I'm confused now because soon I'll have to pack up and move to a country area with my unemployed husband.

Uncle Arthur here...
I was preparing a detailed synopsis of the EY Creditors Report on GEOS Sydney but I got so bored. So, here’s the absolute skinny, OK: (EY call it GEOS National English Academy, but for familiarity let’s call it GEOS Sydney).

Administrators report that at GEOS Sydney collapse –

There were 521 current students, 166 future student enrolments and 78 staff.

There was $69,946 cash in the bank. Total estimated realizable assets (including that cash) $89,946.

$190,000 was owed to staff and $3,000,000 to unsecured creditors.

The Company had the following profit profile:
Profit 07 $73,220
Profit 08 $118,712
Profit 09 $422,164
Profit 10 -$84,691 (to date)

Over the past three and a half years, GEOS Sydney “did not have sufficient assets to meet its current liabilities.”

GEOS Sydney had no Director and Officer Liability insurance.

Why the Financial Difficulties?

“GEOS (Sydney) had been operating profitably for the past three financial years. A decrease in revenue in the six months to 31 December 2009 led to a loss of$85k for the period……

Cash FY07 FY08 FY09
Closing Cash $540,236 $232,660 $141,660

At end of January 10 there was $69,946 in the Company’s bank accounts. The cash position was decling because of the repayment of loans to related (GEOS) parties.

“During the second half of calendar year 2010 (I think they meant 2009) , a number of other entities in the GEOS Australia Group were experiencing financial difficulties. The decision of the Directors to appoint the Administrators was made due to their opinion that GEOS Sydney and a number of other entities either were or were likely to become insolvent.

Given the Company’s already negative asset position, it would appear that there would not have been sufficient funds available to fulfill the obligations of GEOS Sydney creditors, namely the pre-paid but yet unearned expenses of the Company. The main reason for the failure of GEOS Sydney stems from the contagion of failure from other companies in the GEOS Australia Group.”

The Administrators write that “We consider it likely that the Company was insolvent for a period of time prior to our appointment. Further investigations would be required to determine exactly when the Company first became insolvent.”

Blimey, Uncle Arthur, you can see why Sydney GEOS management was jumping ship in the second half of 2009! So the in-coming student cash was outflowing to pay "loans"!!! And three year possible liquidity issues. What were management doing???Do I hear the elephants in the room, again???? Hello, ASIC!!

Given the Company’s already negative asset position, it would appear that there would not have been sufficient funds available to fulfill the obligations of GEOS Sydney creditors, namely the pre-paid but yet unearned expenses of the Company. The main reason for the failure of GEOS Sydney stems from the contagion of failure from other companies in the GEOS Australia Group

Out of interest, do you know exactly what the pre-paid expenses of the Company were? Also, the "contagion of failure" - any ideas how/why the other schools had failed? Was it for similar reasons?

A pre-paid expense is income received in advance by a company for services not yet supplied. In this case pre-paid expenses "relates to tuition, homestay accommodation fees and other student services paid for by students in advance." page 9 EY Report to Creditors/Sydney GEOS. So, the kids had paid up front and the Company didn't then have the money to supply those services in early 2010. (As at 31 December 2009 the prepaid student expense stood at $1.6 million. A $1.2 million loan to related entities was on the balance sheet to make up the bulk of the remainder of the $3 million stated as owing to unsecured creditors).

Contagion and other failures..we have had some brief indication on LJ as to what the other failures might be. For example, there is some suggestion that the Perth buildings were sold for bulk cash but the Perth school then did not then have sufficient cash flow to pay lease back on the premises. There are also suggestions that inter-company loans created stress. It is for these reasons that it is important for ex-staff to post information they have received in their respective Creditors Reports so we can gain a full picture of the way that GEOS operated in Australia.

Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When Mr K’s standing in front of you

(Sorry, Bob, but you would understand)

"confuse confuse," I assume your worry is financial and not related to enjoying teaching. I understand how you feel, more or less, since I was left without a job after the troubles a couple of years ago, and right at the time people stopped getting paid. I got through it though and I don't think it could be worse now... At the time though I just wished I had taken some classes on teaching back home, because having no training and no experience puts you in a bad position if you're looking for a job, and if you want to get private students it's helpful to know what you're doing for that too. Not to be flippant but if worst comes to worst (or is it worse to worse?) the key to saving money is nabe, or maybe curry when it's hot, and only buy meat for it if there is a sticker saying 半額.

that the Managers of the schools were just employees like any other employee at the schools. The Japanese Management dictated to the managers what money were to be kept at the school and what marketing and sales strategies should be in place. The Managers in Australia time and time again told Japan that things were not going well and that (at the time) the business model would "kill" the Australian operation.

After several (many!!!) attempts to make Mr K and his incompetent HQ staff to realize the company was going down several of the managers were practically fired in 2009 for being "difficult". You ask any of the managers that left in 2009 and all of them would say they loved their jobs and would have stayed in the business if they would have been given the opportunity to change a very sick business model.

As a creditor of GEOS (Perth and Gold Coast) it has become very apparent from the scathing administrators reports - funds were sucked out in loans and inordinate expenses. Both the Perth and GC operations had administration expense increase by over 500k each per year. That's a million in funds per year going to "increased costs" Do any staff recall 500k expense increases at these operations? NO is the VERY LOUD answer. Perth's admin went up by 700k on top of the 500k as this was rent. This is nothing but a tax dodge and reallocation of profit - nice work if they can pull it off

has anyone seen the Sydney and Melbourne increases?

A little birdy has also just mentioned that the NZ operations were sold for, wait for it, $1NZ. Nice move MrK - wipe off the guarantees and debts with a quick squiggle of the pen. I wonder if you are involved in the new $1 company?

Mr Emmet and Mr Ratnayake have gone to ground - I just hope the ATO and ASIC do their civil duties. If they do, i doubt they will have any roofs over their heads for much longer...absolutely disgraceful human beings to let this happen.

GEOS US, Canada, UK etc managers and directors. Note GEOS Sydney report by Uncle Arthur shows: 'GEOS Sydney had no Director and Officer Liability insurance'. Hmmmmm - Not only Directors I note - also 'officers' of a company need insurance. Hmmm...You mean officers may have liability?
Now you might think you have no legal liabilities for any illegal trading or misrepresentation in your country. But just how much do you know about the law of your respective countries? When angry creditors and regulators can't get hold of Mr K because he is in Japan, they could well chase after the next layer down. After all the government and media demand scapegoats. Did you knowingly participate in misrepresentation? Did you tell anyone the school was safe, or that fees were protected? Did you transfer money offshore when your own company had a shortage of working capital? Did any student lose their money as a result? Sure, this is mainly a director matter, but if you know it to be illegal, you may be in the firing line.
I note the deafening silence from other international GEOS countries..You KNOW by now unless you are slow of thought that GEOS is cutting and retrenching back to Japan to save the mothership. Unless you are highly profitable and have all your fees in advance covered IN CASH you are doomed.
And don't forget the regional managers have already told blatent lies by loyally and publically repeating the GEOS lie that the Australian branches were separate entities. This devious lie will result in quite a few young incoming students losing their money. Ethically your regional managers are scumbags. Who knows whether they / you are in breach of the law? Remember that the Nova Owner is in jail!!! A lot of countries are like Japan - they turn a blind eye to abuses for years and years, and when it is all over they come after you hard.
To quote The Wire 'Remember - shit rolls downhill' (This means those higher up always blame trouble on the level below) See a lawyer or union rep now. And put your objections in writing to your managers where you think there are legal compromises to cover your ass later. I'm not actually sure though if this will help.

How we think alike!! I was watching The Wire (Series One, absolutely magic) a couple of nights ago on DVD. And. for some bizarre reason, GEOS and its managers drifted across my mind. Maybe it was something to do about the idea expressed by a character that "it all comes back to the money" when dodgy stuff is afoot. Anyway, I suddenlt thought that those managers walking in the GEOS garden should certainly have been thinking about watching their backs.

As a competitor it would be very bad manners for me to forward the Sydney Creditors Report to all these emails. But Australian GEOS staff might have less scruples. GEOS branch managers need access to the creditor report to make their own conclusions and to balance the inevitable company spin.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Note that Justin Mastoyo lives in average house in New Brighton. And has one Mariko Kusunoki as a friend on FACEBOOK. Make what you will of this conspiracy theorists.

Oh, we got it all right. We GEOS staff in Australia got it right up the rectum.

Meanwhile, stage left, the GEOS managers chorus (whining voices, flapping of cheap suits) "It's nothing to do with us. We told the Directors. It's not our fault. And, anyway, we left the company last year, so the collapse and the unsecured creditors' problems are nothing to do with us. So, please. don't raise those ideas again. It's nothing to do with us. We were just managers, managers, managers, managersssssssss......"(Voices diminish and tail-off as the chorus wander away stage left...audience commences to vomit)

GEOS Brighton runs teacher training courses. Does UCLES insist on fee protection and has UCLES ever had to step in and pay for courses for displaced trainees? GEOS Brighton address is:

Staff problems Japan
Schools and scheduals are being shut for upto a week because they cant replace teachers that are leaving.
If I were a student I would be really pissed of with this.

It is all starting to catch up with Geos

I've heard about this problem. Schools where subs are being sent in and sometimes even regular teachers from nearby schools.

Subs and cancelling lessons in a school that has recently lost a teacher is one thing but sending in another regular teacher...

This means they're cancelling another school's lessons to provide a teacher in the school without a NET.
Also in the stories I've heard the previous NET had given their 4 months notice meaning they should have had plenty of time to hire someone else.

Worse yet they don't seem to know when the new teacher will arrive.

They dont know when new Teachers will arrive because there are no new Teachers, I gave about 2 months notice and they still have not found a teacher. My last week is next week. Thank God, It is the worst place I have ever worked!!!

I hope that's not true because I gave my 4 months a bit ago and I really don't want my students to be jerked around for months after I'm gone.

they dont know when new teachers are coming because they are hiring within japan, and then have to wait for visa approval. which only the immigration office knows!

Mine are being jerked around, they dont know about the week that is going to be cancelled the week after next yet. I feel for them too but I have to look after myself my family and my sanity.

I think it's so ridiculous... If I was a GEOs student I would be weary.

I hate that they tell us not to tell our students that we're quitting/not renewing.

They made me lie to my students the reason for why I was leaving, and they really put the pressure on to make sure that tha would be the story I would stick to. Management of that company shouldf rename it to Mismanagemet and how not to piss staff off with teir stupid campaigns and,Hey lets decorate and put on you best suit and be professional. dont worry about our crappy books or facilities just go on with the show.
fuck off man we are human.

EX Australian teacher now working in Japan.

I really really hate that I'm not allowed to tell my students. I have some students renewing for lessons that start after I'll be gone and they think I'm going to be their teacher...

they dont know when new teachers are coming because they are hiring within japan, and then have to wait for visa approval. which only the immigration office knows!

I assume those that are already staying in Japan have a work, spouse, student or tourist visas. If you have a work/spouse visa you can start pretty much immediately. If you have a tourist/student visa then you have to change your visa status which may take about 4-6 weeks. So I don't think it should be difficult to get a timetable on when someone can start.

Are they really replacing them? when was the last time you saw Geos advertising for teachers on Gaijinpot etc. Maybe they are just going to say Gomen nasai Moshiwakenai etc and drag it out till it ends.
When managers dont know who the new teacher is and in the past the new teacher needs to make some welcome poster for the students to make them feel secure that someone IS coming isnt being done, it does make you think.........

You cant close schools for 4- 6 weeks that equals GAME OVER!!!!! they need to recruit overseas and who in their right mind wants to work for Geos if you are already in Japan?
Spouses Visa, need security for work Geos, hasnt got that so wont work there, this is the sort of process that will be going through peoples mind when considering place of employment in Japan at present.

GEOS always has at least 3 adverts on Gaijinpot, they have 5 at the moment (look before you speak), and if they are hiring constantly, then they would be able to plan ahead for that 4-6 week time period it takes to get through the paperwork. 4 months notice gives the company 2 months to start looking and 2 months to hire, train and work out the visa issues. I assume they hire more people with work or spouse visas because most people don't have the funds to fly to japan, find a place to stay and live for 3 months (maybe longer) until they find a job, get their visas and get paid.

Spouse visa. These people are not going to take a job where there is the chance one wont be paid because of bankruptcy. You for got it isnt Geos Management, Its Geos Mismanagement, they couldnt plan a piss up in a brewery!! Most teachers wont give 4 months notice. 4-6 weeks time frame Good joke!!

Spouse visa. These people will take a job where there is the chance one wont be paid because of bankruptcy x 12. HA TAKE THAT!! case closed my x12 trumps your "These people are not going to take a job where there is the chance one wont be paid because of bankruptcy."

That has to be the most Lame post without any argument at all. you need to backup your arguments Man!
You work for Geos dont you. Its ok I understand, I promise not to tell anyone.

It wasn't an argument. It was mockery of your post. I simply did the same thing as you but in a mocking tone. I provided information on the process GEOS can take to get more teachers, through which avenues and how they should have substantial time to find replacement teachers. Yes they are fishing in a pond that isn't restocked, so its starting to dry up. But you are sitting here saying nu uh and im saying uh huh times infinity now. just to trump anything you try to come back with. And if you don't think a spouse would take a job with GEOS look @Fri, 03/05/2010 - 16:21 — Who? (I assume she's married to a japanese man) and there are others that have as well. Most teachers give 4 months notice because they don't want to screw over their students. They may not give a crap about the company but they form bonds with students and therefore don't want screw over those students, as difficult as that seems for you to understand.

I'm glad someone understands why I want to give my four months notice and finish my contract for my students.

You are speaking ちんぷんかんぷん。just because one person posts something that suports you that makes it times 12. Mate, most teachers are not giving 4 months notice and if you read some of the post previous to this you would find that they are actually trying to find out how to get out of it without any civil action, which there would never be any anyway
I am at a school with said problems and will no longer be at said school in said 5 working days.

If that source isnt good enough then who the fuck knows, Mabe your right. Doubt it though!!!!!

I'm at a school that has serious problems but I care about my students and my integrity so I will not just walk out on a contract and my students without the notice I agreed to when signing the contract. I owe my students that much (as giving less than 4 months notice increases the students' chances of being screwed over/jerked around).

You dont have kids. a family, maybe you have that ability to be loyal to GEOS. I dont and I wont, I do feel for my students but what do you say about the students in Australia? and lets not forget the staff who, alot of them have kids, Husband, Wife, rent/ Mortgage to pay, they had no warning just like staff in Japan will have when it is deemed fruitless to continue the charade. I think it is in your best interest to cease being self rightious and be more realistic, Will the students feed you, Your family if you have one? or will they just say
しょうがない 、ここから英語の契約昼入る時気をつきまうよ。I think they will say先生かわいいそだね。それだけ。

I'm not basing my spouse visa argument off of one post but said post and information from other employees within the company. How can you possibly contradict yourself in the same post? They = one person asking if they could be in legal trouble for giving a months notice. And stop taking my x12 serious, it was a joke. Are you leaving GEOS or a different company?

you are spliting hairs over THEY, come on man. And it is more than one person or is this your site so you can check e mails? Yes after I posted my response I did think it was a Joke and Yes I am leaving GEOS, I had worked In Sydney before coming here. So I am Pissed off.

I know for a fact if I was suddenly without a job several of my students would help me out. Also I wouldn't need them to. I am all grown up and can take care of myself. No, I don't have a family depending on me, but I don't of many in GEOS who do. Most (not all) are young uni graduates with very few ties, and most of the people talking about abandoning their students are not family people. If someone had a valid reason like, they didn't get paid or they have a family who they would not be able to support, then sure I understand but most people are just thinking of saving themselves a bit of 'possible hassle'. I mean even if they give their four months and the company closes next week, presumably they will be able to take care of themselves for a little while and get back home/get a new job.

You are a positve person if you think everyone has the resorces (read money) to be prepared for this kind of thing. Most uni grads maybe have 6 months cash if they are lucky. I doubt that though and would stab in the dark and say they live paycheck to paychec as I did. family people might have a bit more and some help from extended family. I dont want to rely on other people. if I can make my situation better through decisions I make then so be it.

I don't know why someone would work for GEOS if they had kids. Doesn't pay enough to support a family, overseas schools may, I don't know. But you most likely have a second income coming in whereas wives in Japan usually stop working after they are married, although its starting to change with the younger generation. Lets stop throwing out the assumptions. Cause thats all thats being giving in response to any of my posts. Lets throw out the assumption that I either work or don't work for GEOS, that I am loyal or not loyal to GEOS, and whether I care about my students or don't care. I haven't even made a personal statement in any of my posts or assumptions(perhaps I have its late). Australia? What happened there sucks and I think GEOS' handling of it is a slap in the students faces and ex and current teaching staff. Their sweeping it under the rug probably did nothing to address the serious doubt that current staff has with the company, and a recent email that was claimed to be a virus that was posted on one of these threads most likely didn't help the situation. (oh wait are those assumptions?) However, companies do close, lets be realistic, with or without warning. But I do think there were serious mismanagement and possibly other shenanigans (I call shenanigans!!!) that caused Australia's collapse. (oops more assumptions) I am still awaiting the Creditors Reports from EY for each school to be posted online to provide better understanding, and hopefully if there were shenanigans the Australian government doesn't just twiddle their thumbs and go "Oh well, cant do anything now"

Well good on you for getting out. They have any luck finding your replacement?

I think it'd be about 50-50 for those who would and wouldn't have the funds to support themselves if GEOS went bloop. Those that don't have the fund are either living paycheck to paycheck because they can't manage money or because they are new to Japan. If you've worked for GEOS for more than a year and you're still living paycheck to paycheck, not really sure I feel for you, although some may be paying back student loans so thats perhaps the exception.

I worked at Sydny GEOS at one of the schools. I came here and was shocked at how shitty the whole thing was in Japan copared to the quality and results in Australia.
Then Australia went bust, I know what is going on, I have met mr TK. he isnt a nice man and is surrounded by fucken idiots. Now that I have said this many people will work out who I am, I dont care anymore. I will be happy to be away from it.
Yes I have a family but I am of the age where I have accumulated wealth and am too lazy to think about making money other ways, but from now I will be out of the Eikawa game as it is to brain numbing and I am here for the long term so I will not do it anymore. I love teaching but Japanese people are really hard to teach English to, plus the politics of company life here make it twice as hard here.

Good luck to everyone!!!!!

They made me lie to my students the reason for why I was leaving, and they really put the pressure on to make sure that tha would be the story I would stick to.

Seriously, fuck them. If you're leaving anyway, it doesn't matter - be straight up with the students. You shouldn't be put in a position where you're having to lie to people, just to protect the company.

Stuff GEOS and all their bullshit.

Well good luck with your life after Eikaiwa. I have no care for finding out who you are. I questioned whether I should even have asked you if you worked for GEOS as to not cause you any undue harassment.

I am fine thanks for your concern and good luck to you!!!

Re: NZ Conspiracy theorists go crazy?
Note that Justin Mastoyo lives in average house in New Brighton. And has one Mariko Kusunoki as a friend on FACEBOOK. Make what you will of this conspiracy theorists.

Please. He used to work for the company. Mariko became FB friends with lots of people who worked for the company. Don't be stupid. He bought the company to save it, and he owns it. K is neither a director nor a shareholder.

Dave Guerin runs a useful NZ blog called Education Directiions which is found at:

www.ed.co.nz/

Here's what the blog has been carrying about our friends at NZ GEOS -

4/2/10 (Bit dated now, but spot on stuff about NZ trust funding)

In (a) story, ...written by Tom Hunt of the Dominion Post, the future of GEOS NZ is under threat. GEOS is a major Japanese company with schools around the world – one of the many big overseas firms operating in NZ. Whether GEOS NZ continues is up to their Japanese investors, as it should be, but the relveance to NZQA is that their student fee protection policy is working well. I was involved in setting up that policy, but it didn’t work for some years because there were too many options, hampering effective oversight by NZQA and economies of scale for the offerings. Now that the Public Trust has dominated the market, there is a reliable service for ELS, students and government. How it roughly works is that all upfront fees go into a trust fund and get paid out to an ELS on a weekly basis.

You might wonder why this matters, but the real beauty of it is that when an ELS closes, whether by NZQA or market reasons, all the unused fees are sitting in a trust account. That means that, before liquidation/deregistration, managers can make a business deal with another organisation to transfer stduents. If that can’t be done, then the students themselves can walk down the road. It also reduces the chances of people mismanaging the enormous positive cashflow that an ELS can generate. While none of this is sexy, and it does increase transaction costs and reduce cashflow, student fee protection has eliminated the “students on the street” story from the ELS market. That story was a periodic attack on the reputation, here and overseas, of every successful ELS and it is great that it has disappeared – the latest articles are nowhere near as damaging as they would have been a few years ago.

5/3/10

GEOS New Zealand has been sold and changed its name, according to Companies Office records. It is now called New Zealand Language Centres Limited and ownership has transferred from Japan-based GEOS Corporation to Justinus Mastoyo, also the sole director. The new owner was the Principal of the Christchurch branch of the chain, which also operates in Auckland and Wellington.... It seems that GEOS branding is continuing to be used – the global agent networks that GEOS has is its great strength but with ongoing questions about the company’s viability, it may become a weakness

Thanks Dave, I enjoy the professionalism of your blog.

The NZ Trust / bank bond system costs heaps: Capital, trustee fees, double audits, huge bank fees and in some cases as much as 1/4 of a full time staff member to administer it. For a school of 100 students the cost including staff time can be 1% of turnover. Which the student pays. Is it worth it? Actually the Aussie system has worked reasonably well too - not quite as well, but quite well. Given that students and agents are relentlessly seeking lower prices, are they prepared to recommend New Zealand over say the US because of superior fee protection systems? If there is a big scandal in Canada for example, will parents stop sending overseas generally, or will agents push students towards countries with audited fee protection systems? A bit of a stretch to believe this. Or will the whisper of fee protection continue to be drowned out by the roar of obscene chain school commissions? The kiwi system is also the most convoluted in the world. Having the high moral ground and being poor comes naturally for a country of idealists. Well at least Kusunoki met his match with the kiwi system - not a penny appears to have been screwed out of teachers, students or the NZ government - or other English schools actually. Let's see if the market moves away from ruthless chains and towards more regulated countries. ?????

As far as I think anyone can tell, GEOS is no longer a part of what-was-formally-called GEOS New Zealand. Yes, the online info did originally show Kusunoki as a shareholder, but it doesn't anymore.

But that isn't what my post is about.

This is more of a 'what's the downside' question than anything else - I'm sure there are some, but ...

When the crash arrives, why not take over a GEOS Japan school? Rebrand. Retool. Actually manage the place right. In theory you'd all ready have a profitable student body (as it's not really the schools that are creating a loss, it's the 100+ member of the various Head Offices.)
I mean if you can get it 'on the cheap, as it were?
Yes, I know you'll need capital to get it started, but did anyone try this at Nova when it went crash?

I'd like to hear any opinions ... and if you are going to say, 'that's nuts!' - fair enough, but why?

Thanks

I found a post on Kuchikomi posted a by person who asks if GEOS is financially viable and asks if GEOS managers have been paid. Its Great! In reply 2, someone (possibly a GEOS manager) replies that managers were paid late in March, after they raised a ruckus about it...please read post #2 that I translated below.

I was looking for an english school (on the intenet) and one of the schools on my list was GEOS. But after reading the posts on Kuchikomi, I decided it was not a good idea to join (GEOS). If I pay tuition to the company and there are workes (j-staff) who do not get paid, I never know when workers (j-staff) will be gone and he school will be closed.

I called GEOS and ask questions and their reply was `There are no problems`, but I think other english schools are much safer.

There are 6 replies to this post.
I will only translate the first 2 or this post on LJ will be lengthy.

At this point, rumors are coming that (GEOS) do not pay salaries and this company is finished. So, when companies get to the situation where they pay salaries late, then its normal for company workers worry about losing trust in their company and gathering in front of the headquarters demanding payment. No payment makes big trouble.

Are you sure there is no payment (at GEOS)?
How can you deal with that?
I wonder if they (GEOS head office) can fix (the payment problems) by the end of this month. Students might worry about this too.
I worry about workers payment. Can anybody tell me if they got payment or not?

I dont want to hear that GEOS closes their schools suddenly one day.

I got late payment today (March 3rd), there was a rebellion and the company had to pay to supress them (j-staff). I dont know what will happen to GEOS in the future.

Wow...reply #2 is a serious indication of whats happening in the company.

For those of you who doubt my translation, please ask a j-friend , j-coworker, or GEOS manager to translate for you. If you have an argument or disagreement, please register with Kuchikomi and make a rebuttal to the orginal poster. Im just reporting what is on the Japanese message boards.

Of all the people I know that work for GEOS, none have told me their managers got paid late. Managers aren't going to hide that fact when they've said they've gotten paid late in previous times. People have said they got paid late on here, but I've got no indication from actual staff that this is true. A trolling wall post can make it seem so though. Perhaps some Mgrs didn't get paid on time, I don't know everyone that works for GEOS just some people. Anyone have a manager that didn't get paid on time here?

This is another Kuchikomi post confirming late payment to J-staff. I will translate the original post and the 2 replies.

This post is dated March 1st and its post number 0015410 Titled `いつ?`...(when?).

***This post is made by a Japanese TROLL and is not worthy of translation***

The post starts out with:

Are you a salary stealer?

ぬるぽ is a word used by otaku and is not used by everyday Japanese and Im not sure how to translate this. Its a trashy post.

There are several other posts on kuchikomi and other message boards about late payment to GEOS managers and j-staff for March 2010. So, it does appear there are financial problems in this company and it appears to be getting worse...not better.

If you doubt my translation, please ask a Japanese friend or co-worker or a GEOS manager to translate for you. If you disagree or have an argument, please register with kuchikomi and file a rebuttal with the original poster. Im just reporting what is on the Japanese messgage boards.

I don't doubt your translations, i've checked the board and seen various postings about not being paid on time, but I haven't heard anything from people outside of the internet world. Like I said some managers may have not been paid on time, I don't know.

I work at GEOS and its coporate policy to not disclose company problems. Maybe a few managers are fed-up with GEOS and doesnt mind sharing the facts, such as late-payment. BUT most GEOS managers will follow company directives without question and will not disclose the fact they got paid late. Thats company policy.

What do you think would happen if GEOS managers went around told everyone that they were paid late and disclosed the fraud and high pressure sales techniques they are forced to implement on a daily basis?? There wouldnt be a GEOS. This company make a living off lies and secrecy. Thats the Japanese way. Do you take everything Japanese people say at face value?? Havent you read about the lies and secrecy at Toyota?? Ever heard of Tatema`e or hon`ne??

So when managers actually told my friends that they got paid, late, that should be taken at face value. Because they must be lying, cause they're not toeing the company line. Managers aren't going to run around their school and town, shouting I haven't got paid, but they will tell fellow employees.

Nice research Translator. Keep up the excellent work!

Ok so its true. Managers were paid late, I guess they toed the line.

Im searching the message boards for late-payment or student complaints...there are many. They all have the same dialouge..`I didnt get paid`....`I need my salary`....`GEOS is not fair to staff`...etc..etc.

Im thinking about posting a translation of an argument on kuchikomi from head office GEOS managers and former school managers where the head office mangers labeled the former managers as `losers` for quitting and they (former school managers) didnt have the `intelligence` and `skills` to stay with the company....its full of rotten insults and trash talk....its a beauty!!
OR how a school manager was forced by upper management to think student=cash...there are some great posts!!

I do have a social life...so I cant translate and post all day. I will find another worthwhile post and post it later today.

January and February were both late.

well done to all the old geos oz managers who left in 09, you got out when you could, you got out because you weren't listened to, you were lied to over and over again, in some cases you were abused, you were be-littled and when you tried to express your opinion you were told you were nothing but trouble. The environment and daily working conditions were not bearable - Special K and his sick and twisted ways which became even more so when his evil daughter mariko joined the party. Do not trust this man or his daughter, in fact do not trust anyone in this pathetic, disfunctional family. Ex managers, you did what you could and congratulations to those of you who are going down new pathways, some opening new schools - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Dear Shawn, is it possible to make seperate threads. One for GEOS Oceania and one for GEOS Japan?? The posts from ex-Australia GEOS workers get mixed up with current/former GEOS Japan teachers and that ruins the flow of information and the topics get confused or current issues in GEOS Japan get buried by posts from angry GEOS Oceania workers.

Is this possible??? It would really help.
