World Baseball Classic 2009

I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I follow the sport. It's been impossible to avoid seeing the results of "Samurai Japan" given their success. They've been playing well and don't seem to miss Ichiro's bat. However, for a tournament that is supposed to spread the goodness of baseball around the world, Japan will play Korea for the fifth time in the tournament.

Jason Coskrey in the Japan Times writes:

The World Baseball Classic may involve 16 nations, but this year's tournament has looked more like a Japan-South Korea invitational.

The two Asian nations have faced each other four times in the WBC and will meet for a fifth time in the final if Japan defeats the United States in its semifinal game on Sunday.

There's a saying that familiarity breeds contempt, and it's likely many fans are growing weary of Japan facing South Korea at the WBC.

Nobody expects the WBC to be perfect in its second tournament — the first WBC was held in 2006 — but a pair of teams possibly facing each other five times begs for a format change.

Adding more teams or mixing up the second round groupings could be one way to combat the problem.

Simply shipping Japan and South Korea to different locations in the second round would have eliminated two meetings between the countries.

I think he's being too diplomatic here. He should be asking how on earth two teams can meet five times in a single tournament. It seems like an easy thing to fix, but nobody has done anything about it. In the 2006 WBC, Korea had a winning record of 6-1 (the best record of all teams in the tournament) but never made it to the final match because they lost to Japan, a team they had previously beaten twice.

The WBC is a great idea in principle, but changes have to be made in order to not only keep it going but to help it grow as well.

Absolutely. It feels like Korea has been on the TV the whole time. It's ridiculous and makes for a boring tournament. Start by fixing the format. How difficult is it to create a round-robin tournament?

Spot on Shawn. Can you

Spot on Shawn. Can you imagine the Soccer World Cup, having Brazil play Italy 5 freakin times? At any soccer world cup (including the USA) there are FULL stadiums no matter what the teams. For most of these WBC games, officials are counting people twice and even then the stadiums are only a quarter full
This is no way to spread baseball beyond the Americas and East Asia. But then again, baseball is just a pale imitation of the great sport of CRICKET!!!

Cricket Is a Sport For Pussies

Cricket reminds me of a game that bored grade schools, who only had a boat paddle and a ball, would make up in the back yard. No real athelete has has every seriously engaged in this sport. Any sigle major league baseball player could beat up any entire cricket team by himself, with or without his steriods. Yeah, MLB players take steriods, they have to. The most competive MEN in the world are challenging each other for a few chances at glory. It's the 4th best sport in the world. Of coure #1 is American Football, not to be confused with soccor, the faggiest game ever, besides cricket. #3 and #4 are kind of a toss up between Backet Ball and Ice Hockey. I'm going to have to give the edge to Ice Hockey, simply because they scrap a lot more.

I'm sure a bunch of you haters are thinking Ice Hockey is a Candian sport. And I agree, it is. I don't only like American sports. Rugby is respectible.

PR needs some work

You're right, Smackie. I don't think I've ever seen or participated in a tournament where the same teams met more than twice. The WBC could use some better PR, too.

Cricket

Americans only disparage cricket because they don't have the brain cells to comprehend the finese of the sport. Instead they flock to the NFL (National Fairy League) to watch men in tight tights stand around having a bloody mothers meeting every 30 seconds because they're too pooped to run any longer then that. If that's what passes as sport then I'll pass. Ricky Ponting and his team of athletes far surpass any fairies in tight tights.

Japan wins!

Credit where credit is due: the WBC final was everything a final game should be. It's hard to top Ichiro's 10th inning clutch hit that wins the game and silences his critics with one swing of the bat.

Here here. Cricket rocks, it

Here here. Cricket rocks, it is only dissed by those who can't understand it yes, you, Don Laga - and I feel sorry for them. One and a half billion people around the world can't be wrong. Yeah, sure, cricket players are pansies, facing up to a ball hurtling down on them at 160km/h. And, guess what? The fielders DONT WEAR MITTS!

Reckon cricket players are soft? Try this on for size.....
