This is from last week's Classifieds in the Japan Times, but it's a keeper. Eikaiwa is fraught with tales of low pay, insane students, insane managers, and general stupidity that would make Scott Adams drool with excitement.
I can't think of a worse job in eikaiwa than singing over the phone to children.
A: "So, what do you do?"
B: "Oh, I sing to children on the phone."
A: "Get away from me."

Not a bad gig.
It sounds bad, but that job has been around for a number of years and is decent. I actually applied for it about four years ago, but happened to find a better full-time deal before I took it.
You have to memorize about 80 songs, but it's easy if mind-numbing work, pays relatively well, especially if you're in the lowly-qualified or unqualified ranks of the industry (as in you have only a couple years' experience or less, no M Ed, no CELTA or DELTA, no TEFL or TESL, etc.), and pays predictably and on time.
That is hilarious. Imagine
That is hilarious.
Imagine your self esteem after a week of that shit.
Garrett, Thanks for the
Garrett,
Thanks for the info. I think like Wilde Oscar says, my self esteem would be shot after a week.

Ha ha.
That's assuming remaining self-esteem. By the time an English teacher is choosing jobs based on salary alone, the self-esteem is pretty much shot. Besides, how much self-esteem does one maintain in any corporate classroom?
I know a few people who have worked there and all have complained not so much of the ridiculous nature of singing on the telephone (beats the hell out of teaching little kids), but of the initial effort required to memorize 80 inane songs and of the tedium of answering the phone, singing, and hanging up.
