I cant believe your attitude - I'm glad you have another job but you should be a bit more open-minded about the situation. I was made into an AT only last month - and I didn't really want it - my AAM kept pushing it and eventually I decided to take it. I've NEVER 'shitted' on anybody else to get my job and haven't alienated anybody. I became AT only one payday before this disaster - we don't deserve this. My original post was directed towards those who are posting things that suggest nova teachers and students somehow deserve what is happening now. I can see that you are not of that opinion, and so I encourage you to continue posting :)

I find some of the comments here a bit below the belt.I worked under many ATs and generally found them to be good guys who were trapped between doing their job and keeping a good relationship with their staff.Although some of the ATs i worked for were gay, it was openly discussed and it was no concern of ours since it was a private matter.People shouldnt be judged on their sexual preferences but instead on their ability to perform what is required in their job.
However,i did find some of my fellow teachers to be similar to performing monkeys in a circus.They were shameless attention-seekers with juvenile minds.Mind you i might be considered a bit over the hill.
I dont work at NOVA anymore so maybe it has changed since those days but im sure things run pretty much the same way.

Are you for real? I worked for NOVA for 3.5 years (1.5 as AT) and I worked as a Maths teacher in Australia for 2 years before I went over to Japan. Yes, I was a Maths teacher in an Australian highschool. And guess what? I didn't need a teaching degree. I have a degree that requires more mathematics than a maths teacher's degree, hence they gave me a job. I have moved back to Australia and am living in Darwin, and not working in the teaching profession anymore. I have had some job offers but I wanted to take a different direction careerwise. I really don't know nor understand why you think you are so high and mighty because of a degree that anyone can get. Shall we start bowing to you and worshiping you? My word!

I was lucky to make it out in time and find myself a better gig. Remember that those ATs and BTs are probably hanging around at Nova clocking in for their shifts due to the fact that the government will re-emburse them for their cash a few months down the line. It might take some time, but most people I know who've checked into their local Hello Work are confident.

What I find funny is there's this guy, sitting in front of a computer somewhere out there. He probably dropped out of his philosophy program in university, because he couldn't handle it, and took a teaching degree instead. Now he's finding out that you don't actually need a teaching degree to get a job in teaching, and he's getting upset at how much time he wasted struggling to fulfill the math requirement for teaching 9-year olds. He's flipping through his Dictionary of Insults, desperately trying to find a way to fend off the shame and embarrassment. When challenged to reveal his name, he cowers in the shadows and flips through the dictionary even faster. He probably is also upset because he lined up for the new Halo game for 3 days, but got shut out, as there weren't enough available, and even for a nerd, he's too slow and too dumb.

Nova is a brainwashing facility.Robots teach students who in turn become robots.It is a typical Japanese structured system that allows no room for freedom and creative development.Change, flexibility and intellectual freedom of thought are all part of human nature and Nova simply doesnt create this environment.Basically, instructors are reduced to teaching whatever is on the page.There is a mould and you must fit it.
It was interesting the reactions that were caused by my post.Naturally everyone assumed that i was this foul, horrible guy who wastes his time abusing others.The fact is im an honest, nice guy who likes to have fun.I enjoyed playing a character and i was fascinated at how easily many people were sucked in to that character.

any stories about multimedia?I am interested in any stories / experiences of working in Multimedia. Is it a good place to work? I am a nova branch employee and i hear i am liklier to get paid if i change to multimedia.

Nova has "teachers"? I thought that most of them were unqualified, uncertified, inexperienced, recent graduates? Calling the employees of NOVA "teachers" is like calling someone who administers CPR to a person at a restaurant a "paramedic". It's not that they may not achieve some results but you wouldn't want to bet on that person to do what needs to be done on a consistent basis. NOVA "teachers" USUALLY don't understand what they're doing; or why; or how people learn languages. They don't know much about language acquisition, assessment, how to effectively plan programming so that students can meet their goals.

As for the comment about the teacher shortage in Australia, fair enough, but ultimately any experience doing eikaiwa in Japan is by and large not recognized as legitimate experience "teaching" for an accredited organization in English speaking countries.

For that, you gotta go back to school.

The experience part is okay- but you have to have some real certification to get a job teaching anything outside of Japan.

Furthermore, all of the comments are about being ATs and being professional and all the rest are just funny.

You don't become an AT by being a good teacher. If so, why does NOVA evaluate company spirit, # of toppatsus, # of demo lessons, # of sales etc?

You can be an absolute idiot and still become an AT if you wear a suit, play good corporate games, and seem to be "頑張ります”

I personally don't have any problems with anyone who teaches or taught at NOVA. I think that there were a number of instructors who were good, professional and legitimately tried to help their students.

NOVA's attitude towards both clients and instructors was appalling though.

The world won't be a worse place if NOVA goes down forever.
