Students Get a Handout

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry has decided to give Nova students a ¥200,000 yen subsidy.

From The Japan Times

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry has decided to provide tuition subsidies of up to ¥200,000 each to some 4,000 former students of bankrupt language school Nova Corp. who enrolled to take advantage of a government training program, sources said Saturday.

To get the subsidies, the students will be required to continue their lessons at G.communication Co., which took over Nova's brand name and operations, they said.

[...]

To receive the money, the applicants must complete the study or training course selected, which made it impossible for most of the students to collect on the deal.

On the surface, this sounds like a good thing if you're a student, but I wonder how it well it will work given that g.communication hasn't had stellar success in re-opening schools. What do you do if you don't live near a school?

The cynic in me wonders if this isn't a ploy to lure students in schools where they will hopefully sign up for more lessons. How motivated would students be to take up this offer if they have yet to see any of their lesson fees refunded?

I was in Odawara recently and decided to take a look at the old Nova school to see what was left of it. Since it was shuttered, I couldn't see inside, but someone had taped a memo pad to a pillar for instructors and students to leave a few parting words.

Some were enterprising, like this instructor:

Instructor's ad

Most of the messages were simple "hellos":

Hello from an instructor

The message wouldn't be complete without a little outrage:

Give me my money back!

Hmmmmm, so now the government are trying to cover their asses by scamming students back into the devil`s doorstep with this so called "deal"!

Speculation: Just how much government involvement, and by whom in government, has there been in this whole Gcondom mess? Kinda looks like there may have been some significant involvement - mebe this newest "deal" (such a deal!) is only the tip of the iceberg regarding government's hand in the G thing....?

I was a teacher at Odawara and there's alot of students that have been left out in the cold ! I know of students going from Yugawara to the closet g-cum school which is in Chigasaki. Odawara was a gold mine and its sister school Dyna city was raking in millions of yen (because it was in Itoyokado and had 300 plus kids)- sad to see them go - but the biggest worry has been the teachers who are still on Standby (living too far from Tokyo and having to pay 24,000 yen for a pass to Yokohama GABA is just crazy)...G-com needs to open a school in the area

I can't believe this.

What an insult to the students left out of the deal but mostly to the teachers who are on standby and who have had to go home.

To be honest, I'm sick and tired of the student sob story. I'm Japanese and was once a student learning English at a private school. This is nothing about sympathy but another form of sleasy backdoor marketing. I know teachers who have lost over 1 million yen! It's okay, they'll get probably 40% of their money 1 year down the line. (T-sensei, how's that for sarcasm!)

I'm ashamed of Japan's Government. I'm worried about Japan's future. It's sad that I'm happy I don't live their anymore.

Sorry

Teachers sent home on standby to return who knows when..

Paycuts across the board for all J staff and paycuts for instructors to come..

Notes from Management suggesting dismissal for those who call in sick..

Instructor manhandled at MM Center by a senior G Com manager..

Letters of non re-employment given to those whose visas expire in Jan/Feb/March..

Morale at it's lowest point beyond Sept/Oct '07..

Nagoya we have a problem!

Please expand on your comments and knowledge. We realise that alittle more detail may hiint at identity and we don't wish that but...to comment a little more info would be helpful.

WTF?! What about the people who got sent home on standby?

What about us lot who are all still waiting for the two fucking months they owed us from last year?!

How about the fact that they're giving ex-AAMs severance packages and a plane ticket home? Where the hell were our severance packages?!

FFS!

I used to think Japan was such a great country... what happened to it?

http://www.oneria.com/

There is this theory out there that you have to break the law to succeed in Japan. I believe it.

The Japanese give themselves all the breaks. Name one time in the last 10 years a Japanese person committed a crime against a Westerner and was arrested for it. Sure, maybe you can but I can name high profile cases where the murderer, perpetrator is known and still nothing happens.

The students get fistfulls of money thrown at them but we instructors get nothing - well except for silence. Where are the answers to our questions? Silence. I am an instructor on standby - more than 10 years at Nova! and I get standby and no answers!

The wicked (G comm) prosper.

why the hell are you still at nova then! with 10 years at nova you must have some experience for god sake! you have a huge advantage over the 1000's of people looking for jobs at the moment! why dont you stop whinging about g-com and look for another job!
also dont blame this on Japan. I know the government is screwing us all but dont generalise this situation to the whole country!

Unfortunately for you and me nothing happened to it. I got out of nova over 2 years back and work for gaba now. It's no shining beacon but is doing ok, but the sad thing is that japan hasn't changed one iota since i came here 4 years back.

You gave 10 years to Nova?! Nothing else needs to be said.

For Pete's sake people. Working at an eikaiwa is exactly a career path!

Japan has good and bad points. It does not owe you anything though. If things are not working out for you or you do not like it, JUST GO HOME!!!

You've got things backwards anonymous! If you think I can get another job easily because of my so-called experience you are mistaken. What's wanted in this country are youth, naivete, blonde hair, blue eyes and virginity! Except at the Gaba mill where they'll take anyone because they can't keep them for long.

Where did you see me whinging about G comm? It wasn't that last post - I was whinging about the government! I guess I can see why you're happy at Gaba - you can't read!

Now, do you have a relevant point to make or do you just want to promote warm fuzzy feelings about the goodness of Japanese people while belittling me for expressing my views?

10 years at Nova?

You putz!!

did I say I was gaba!? I dont think I did! why are complaining about this government when I bet whatever country your from has some problems with its government! its just affecting you now so you are angry! ever heard of privite teaching!? you should know some japanese people being here for 10 years!?

To "10 years at Nova?", "10 years", "hold on a min!!" and everyone like them,

I just want to ask why you think NOVA was such a dead end job ?? I was a hard worker when i was there for about 5 years and i got a good salary - it let me see most of Japan, fed me and my family, paid the bills etc etc

If you have a family then its harder to look for new jobs which are usually further away from your home. I think its wise to want to continue g-comm if they offer the same salary and the school is close to your house ! Gaba may be good but you pay your own travel which if you live in the sticks is bloody expensive.

Anyway, I really just want to say "get " because you guys are just complete wankers and I'll be very happy to say that I'll still be here when you guys are gone from Japan

WANKERS

Having spent a year in Japan and working as an english teacher, I would thing that for most foreigners, teaching english in a foreign country is not a career. So reading about some guy that put a decade into NOVA is pretty funny...and sad.

Perhaps you're one of those guys that just settles for whatever he can get or whatever is easy. Chances are its the latter since the job itself is a joke and you're pretty angry at people downplaying the english teaching profession.

Personally I hope people like you stay in Japan or Asia or wherever. You guys can't hack it at a real job and would likely just be a drain on the rest of society back home.

Japan isn't the problem, its the foreigners. You douchebags who think Japanese culture should conform to your shitty way of thinking are constantly being kicked in the balls by the Japanese government and society. Good, you deserve it.

Japan is a great country with a lot to offer, see and do. It seems a lot of Japanese are waking up to the fact that they have a large group of losers who show up in their country because their lives back home were shit, or they're lazy and need an easy job, or maybe they're still virgins at 25 and need a girlfriend. Whatever the case too many of you kids have zero respect for anything Japanese yet you seem to have this sense of entitlement because you're western.
So please, stay there until they pass new laws or rules that force you to move to some other country (since you'll be too lazy and/or stupid to abide by them), as long as you never have to deal with real life and can keep hiding in Asia, you should be fine.

I am totally in agreeance with you nokimo on most points,

As i said above i left nova over 2 years ago and have been a happy gaba employee since then. But i understand your frustration with the government and so forth as they tend to sweep the unwanted under the carpet and forget about them. For those that disagree go check out shinjuku sometime after midnight then ask your students (if you have any) if there is a homeless problem in japan. Most will say no until you point out shinjuku, yoyogi or ueno.

And ask yourself how many of the sales instructors were blond and blue eyed? The majority were, although i may be wrong on that.

However nokimo layoff gaba man, i mean it's not the best conditions but may i point out these things:

1) If you are a good instructor you book up fast, and new instructors are given students to help them with this. But sure it does take time.
2) Unlike nova/gcomm students can choose you and so there is a lesser chance of getting the unwanted arsehole clients who hate you as the ones who like you will book you before they can.
3) Yeah you are right some can't read though.... makes me wonder how they graduated from graduate school looking for a short holiday before taking up their chosen profession.

But you are right about the government - why should it care about us who can't vote when it doesn't care about those who can.

"Why is Nova a dead-end job?" Are you serious? What just happened to Nova? What just happened to the employees and students? What just happened to Anders? what just happened to those on "standby?" Take a look in the mirror you naive idiot and ask yourself "what is happpening to me?" Wake the fuck up.Not a bit of sympathy from me for anyone who is dumb enough to depend on them for any kind of employment. Take charge of your own life and family....Weak...very, very weak you are....

You're right and wrong anonymous,

Yes there are some that come because they believe that english teaching is an easy job, but it's not. Not if you care for the student you are teaching. Sure you can joke around and be silly so on. But remember that the ambassadors and so on from asia learnt english from someone and chances are that it was a quality instructor. To say that english teaching is not a career is demeaning and arrogant to say the least. Do you know the background of the person you are attacking? Perhaps he/she has a degree in teaching and wishes to apply it to english education?

Did you consider that when writing your diatribe? I hope so.

"Why is Nova a dead-end job?" Are you serious? What just happened to Nova?...Take charge of your own life and family....Weak...very, very weak you are....

So, by that rational, people who worked for Enron for many years were weak, too? Just because the company someone worked for went bankrupt doesn't mean THEY are weak. Lots of companies go bankrupt, and lots of people get screwed when they do.

There were always issues with NOVA, but at the same time they were the industry leader for nearly 20 years, they offered teachers better pay than other big schools, and they even offered long-term workers a chance at promotions of various kinds. I know it's hard for you to believe because you probably only intend on staying for a couple of years, but some people actually do make a career out of teaching English in Japan. Does it pay as well as a lawyer or stock broker? No, but teaching is a fairly low paying profession anywhere in the world. But it's still a PROFESSION, to anyone willing to dedicate themselves to it. For many, many years NOVA was one of the better options for career teachers in Japan.

The downfall of NOVA happened within just a couple of months. Just one year ago, if you had said NOVA would go bankrupt you would have been laughed at. It's unfortunate for people who tried to make a career there, but it doesn't mean they are 'weak.' It's just bad luck; you could take a job with ANY company and it might go bankrupt. I respect anyone who is willing to make a commitment and stick with a job for 10 years. Most teachers I know spend their few years in Japan running around from one job to the next, never getting any farther ahead than in the last job they quit. If that's the kind of teacher you are I would say you are the 'weak' one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I reckon anyone who did ten years at Nova as a full-time instructor would have been taking home something like 350,000 yen a month by the tenth contract, maybe more if they managed to get all the juicy increments. Taking any other job in eikaiwa (or many outside) would have been a big pay cut after that.

For all of you who say, "get a proper job in your own country", did you know that the monthly salary on JET (or at old Nova before the change in working hours) is actually higher than the average starting graduate wage in the UK?

And can we please have a moritorium on people starting off with something like "I spent about a year teaching in Japan..." and then going on to rant dismissively about any of the following: Japanese culture; Japanese people; foreigners in Japan; English teaching as a career. Yes, eikaiwa can suck, yes Japan is different from the West, no I wouldn't especially like to have a drink with some of the foreigners living long-term in Japan. Ok, we get it, can we move on now?

Moving on would require people to change the way they think about everything in Japan. You can learn a lot in a year if you actually want to, a lot of foreigners who come to Japan don't care about anything besides an easy pay check. The system is on a downturn at the moment, and a lot of people are complaining and playing victim, what else do you expect? People to evolve and actually change? Get real

I talked to a buddy who works for JET last week. He recieved a letter from his school indicating possible budget cuts via the Ministry of Education. According to him and the letter, 18/36 ALT jobs in Shiga prefecture may not have their contract renewed due to money concerns.

On top of that, JET has always been regarded as better then the McDonaldized NOVA, GEOS, EEC companies. Nice comparison. And 350,000 yen a year is around 3000 US or 3000 CDN a year. That's about the average a new University grad can make coming out of school. Making that after even 5 years in the industry is pretty bad. You want to make a career teaching conversational english? Go nuts, doesn't look like anything other then pure laziness and mediocrity.

eikaiwa's do suck, pretty obvious by this point. And a lot of foreigners suck as well. Dismiss it all you want, its still the truth. Or don't I don't care, maybe you're one of them.

You want to make a career teaching conversational english? Go nuts, doesn't look like anything other then pure laziness and mediocrity.

eikaiwa's do suck, pretty obvious by this point. And a lot of foreigners suck as well.

I do lots of privates and keep my eyes open for good part time teaching jobs. So my pay is up and down, but I make between 300,000 and 500,000 yen a month. That's working far fewer hours than a full time GEOS or AEON teacher. My buddy who does the same has made as much as 1 million yen in a single month! My wife is a registered nurse, so her monthly salary is around 450,000 yen a month. I'm living a very comfortable life as an English teacher, thank you very much. Just because you haven't found a way to do it doesn't mean the job sucks, it means YOU suck.

Yeah, I speak, read and write Japanese well, also. I do freelance translation work, and I invest my money, as well. So I can do other things if I want to. But nothing beats teaching for good pay/enjoyable work, if you know how to go about doing it. Just because you can't make a successful go of it, don't project your failings on to others.

LOL, what a load of comment crap this website produces! I'll throw my hat in and sit on the pot too...teaching for 10+ years at NOVA is very Japanese: Loyalty and doing one thing very well. I have taught as an ALT in public schools like a JET employee, I have worked for NOVA, and I have worked for private schools taught out of people homes. After seeing those environments I can say that the English education was the best at the home schools, then NOVA, then public schools. Students also paid the most at Private schools, then NOVA, and then of course the JET ALTs were provided by the local schools. When do ALTs ever actually plan a lesson and teach??? My job was mostly participating in the games/drills that the teacher had planned; a chance for the kids to interact with a "native" and hear a native accent other than a cd or dvd. Students got more English instruction and practice at a 40 minute NOVA lesson then they did during the 50 min public school lesson. And, not all Public school teachers are JET. Jet is too expensive of a program, the budget is shrinking for English education, so many ALTs are from OWLS or Interact...same job, just getting paid a lot less and fewer benefits than the government employees called JET teachers. Basically, unless you open your own school or mainly teach private lessons then you won't have job security and you won't be "rich". Why some teachers think they are better than others because they work for a different company is another asinine pile of poo I come across on this website. There are good, quality instructors anywhere you go and there are just as many crap instructors too. I don't care of you are an Eikaiwa school or working at a public school. That’s why individual boards of education don't directly hire foreigners. They can't have the hassle of hiring a teacher nor do they dare sponsor a teacher. I sibling of mine did JET for a couple of years before working for other companies and eventually opening her own school as well as continue to work as an ALT. This sibling has told me many stories about crappy JET alts. My sibling also has friends who were turned down by JET and those friends are now employed in much better situations. JET/NOVA/Private tutor doesn't make you a good/bad teacher. I be brash some other time and continue my own diatribe at that point but, basically, its OK to vent on this site but try to keep it valid, quit thinking you're better than someone else and calling them names, and even if you love Japan you can still see it has problems. Finally, the Eikaiwa industry has completely changed along with all English teaching jobs have changed. Welcome to the world I worked in at large corporation in the U.S., no job security, shrinking budgets, trying to do more with less...go work for yourself.

Anyone got any toilet paper in here, I forgot mine! Sorry to be so long winded and can anyone help me with the math problem I have to figure out to post this artcile...lets see 5 + 12=.......62? lol

In case you have not learned, written English has something called paragraphs. People who cannot write in them are not worth reading (yes, I am sure I make plenty of errors too but missing something as basic as paragraphs is not one of them).

Anyway, it boils down to this Nova/eikaiwa (I was going to write an unkind word here but..)
1. Crappy companies like Nova fail all the time. It happens to lots of people every day. Stop expecting to be bailed out.
2. Teaching English has its ups and downs but simply does not take that much skill. You can easily be replaced.
3. you are a foreign worker. The locals simply do not worry about you. I doubt they would in any country.

Make the best of it. If things are not working out, go home or someplace else.

"I think it is wise to continue with g-com..." Sorry I still think it is naive and weak...and if you think you are on a career path, well...

If you truly want to dedicate yourself to English-teaching and "care for your students", you don't (or shouldn't have) worked for Nova, or any of the other eikaiwa for too long.

Instead, you work for a company that "cares for its students", recognizes and values the efforts you put in, and offers proper training and development of your skills.

Nova plainly did not do ANY of that - they were largely interested in getting as much money off students as they could, and in the later years, cutting the salary and increments (amongst other things) to protect their profits. They did not have the best interests of their customers, staff and instructors at heart, far from it.

Anyone who went in there attempting to "do the best they could for the students" for years is/was, at best, naive, and at worst, had their head in the clouds - I can't see how you could get very far in improving your teaching skills and "customer care" credentials at a company like Nova, for the reasons I mentioned above.

You really do need a reality check if you think that Nova was doing a lot for your career.

Meanwhile, back in the US...

Anyway, it boils down to this customer service/sales/office work/tech support (I was going to write an unkind word here but..)

2. IT tech support/sales/customer service/generic office work has its ups and downs but simply does not take that much skill. You can easily be replaced.
3. you are an expendable worker no matter where you live or what you do. The locals--even your own countrymen--simply do not worry about you. Why should they?

Make the best of it. If things are not working out, go on welfare or jump off a bridge.

Most of what you say is true of any company, in any industry, in any country of the world. Why do you think some other profession is going to treat you any better?

Many of you must be quite young and naive. I guess you went to college, got a degree and figured that now the world owed you a living. You were 'qualified' to be a productive member of society and believed you were going to make a difference. For your first conquest, you would go to Japan for a while and bring English to the Japanese masses. You would make a difference.

Then you got here and learned your first lesson of the corporate world; you don't matter. But seeing as how this was your first job you think it's only true of eikaiwa. Have fun with the rest of your life back in the States, Australia, UK or wherever you're from! When you get back there and start your 'real career' you'll realize that your new company sucks just as bad as NOVA. You still won't matter.

Good point "Grow Up" and well put. As far as not using paragraohs earlier...lmfao, this is an informal writing style here. Look at everyone elses posts and you'll see that they don't use proper paragraphs or even the basic 5 paragraph format for a simple paper. If you want to read some of my 10-15 page research from many years ago in college, o'wait, you just want to go online, not sign any sort of name, and them bash someone for no reason: GROW UP, Japan is not manga, girls who will sleep with every non-native and give them wild and exotic sex, and Japan isn't a cake walk. It's like most developed nations out there in the world when it comes to business and government budgets!

love ya!

Nobody saying you have to have what you post proofread. I think I speak for most people though when I say that reading things written without paragraphs is pretty annoying and the literate generally do not bother.

In other words, it goes past informal to childish/illegible.

No, Japan is not all milk and honey.

To the guy who said his wife is a nurse, does she wear her uniform in the bedroom??!!!?

hopefully not true however...for anyone

"Most of what you say is true of any company, in any industry, in any country of the world. Why do you think some other profession is going to treat you any better?"

Not too sure why you think that I think that, but anyway, perhaps you should take my advice and try and find a company that doesn't treat you like crap.

Or else put your money where your mouth is and start something up yourself, as opposed to taking it in the rear end off your managers day after day.

Not too sure why you think that I think that, but anyway, perhaps you should take my advice and try and find a company that doesn't treat you like crap.

Not too sure why YOU assume I'm taking crap from anyone. Between part-time eikaiwa work, private lessons and freelance translation work I'm pretty much my own boss, and make around 400,000 yen a month. Not that great, but together with my wife's salary of 450,000 yen/month we're doing just fine. Own my own house in the suburbs, have two cars, good savings and investments.

For all your talk about eikaiwa being a bad 'career,' can you honestly say your doing as well? If you are, great. But most of the foreigners I know who are successful in Japan are career English teachers. They don't just bitch and moan about how rotten eikaiwa is. They go out and find a way to succeed at it. People like you who just complain about it last about 2-3 years and then run back home with your tail between your legs.

Why do we always fight?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTxRanF7Ze8

Quality stuff here. Some guys put director Ono's letter up in fashion!!!

A genuine concern, or just an excuse to dump teachers they don't want/need?

Anyone know exactly when this letter was sent out?

wow..izzit true?...anyone who calls in sick at Zombie Nova will get canned?

...watching the drama is priceless...i am so glad to be out..but its like seeing your old house on fire...it doesnt really concern you...but you cant help but watch.

any bets on how long the corpse will continue standing?

I wager 2 months more...

anyone?

How long they will last depends on the student numbers of course. Anyone have any idea on how many students came back to G etc.?? Just wondering. I have never been part of the system but have been watching it also.

"People like you who just complain about it last about 2-3 years and then run back home with your tail between your legs."

I didn't complain about it though. If you go back and read my post again, you'll see that I said exactly what you've just said, ie "They (eikaiwa teachers) don't just bitch and moan about how rotten eikaiwa is. They go out and find a way to succeed at it." That's exactly what I recommended - if you give a toss about teaching English, you don't work for Nova, you find a company that values what you do and genuinely helps you to advance your career, or else start up on your own, like you've done.

We actually agree with each other.

Mate, I've heard that story so many times. Ooooh, look at me, I have a family........ but I don't want to travel for work.........

I too have a family, and I travel 4.5 hours a day. I quit Nova 2 years ago and got myself an MA in linguistics and then sent letter after letter after letter to all the universities in Kansai. I eventually got a job. Yeah, I travel, but I have 5 and half months paid holidays a year and I make more than 500,000 yen a year. And I live in rural Japan. I want to look after my family and, for me, that was the best long term plan for me to support them. If you stay at G-comm,matey, then you aren't going to be in a strong position to support your loved ones.
Travel, for fucks sake. Japanese trains are pretty fast and reliable.

If you received a letter from G-COM saying your contract will be ended DON'T fill the form “final salary request” and DO NOT SEND IT to Gaiji !!!
The labour office said it might be seen as a resignation which could be a problem if you intend to get unemployment benefit.

I've just received information from my ex RAAM that G Comm plans to close 10 schools within the next month!! Not sure which ones, but the teachers there are gonna be put on standby...which basically means layed off!

The more I think about all what's happened at NOVA, the more I see it as a confrontation between 2 dreams, Saruhashi's dream and Ono's dream.

The way I see it Saruhashi's dream was quite close to an European dream. A mix of different cultures brought together hopping that something would come out from this melting pot. And Saruhashi's dream suffered from exactly the same problem as Europe which is corruption. Because it is a romantic dream, it attracted a lot of naive believers who gave more than what's reasonable to their church. Some people more pragmatic, started to make a lot of money fleecing those sheep, some saw it and just looked in an other direction. Now I think Saruhashi was one of those. When NOVA went bankrupt, I thought he was a coward not to come at his company, communicating by fax like he did. Now I think he just couldn't face it. Not the employees but his actual dream falling apart.

But Ono's dream is more of an american one. It is about pragmatism, about "good business". Those guys are worshipping only one god, the one celebrated on the famous bank note and they are ready to suffer and make sacrifices to reach their goal. But ironically they failed to find believers. People need to dream, Ono gives them another eikaiwa...

*(I hope that my metaphors didn't hurt any nationalistic feelings. If so sorry, it wasn't the purpose)

Why don't you stop calling each other names and start supporting one another? I know we've all had a rough time but behaving like rude badly brought up teenagers isn't going to help.

the only thing your metaphors hurt were my sense of logic...

"I don't see how you could get very far improving your teaching skills at a company like Nova."

The above statement is true only if being at Nova would somehow prevent a teacher from taking the initiative to try different things. The random booking system and the 40 minute blocks of lesson time can't be gotten around, but other than that what's to stop someone from improving their teaching ability just because they happen to be at Nova? Is there something in the air at a Nova school that somehow neutralizes one's ability to improve on things like knowledge of vocabulary usage, grammar, the nature of language acquisition, teaching technique, etc? Except for official observations that happen only twice a year, its ridiculously easy to even use texts and materials that are totally different from the "official" stuff, or if you want to make a nod to convention have the book out for five minutes and then bring out whatever stuff you want to use. If you've planned it out and are making a sincere effort to actually teach something, the students will appreciate it. The idea that teaching skills can't be improved just because you are physically present inside of a Nova school is simply not true.

And for those of you who think there is no skill to teaching, simply think back to some of your own teachers. Was there not one, even one teacher whose explanations made a seemingly complex thing easy to understand, who showed patience and empathy when you had difficulty mastering something, who was genuinely interested in who you were and what you had to say? That's teaching. If you think the teaching profession itself has any worth at all, than Nova, G.comm, or whoever ultimately has no power to diminish it. A good teacher is a good teacher. If he wants to get better, he will, and no AT, AAM, IAM, etc. can stop him. The refusal to comprehend this is the true sign of needing a "reality check".

I do agree, Ono is not the owner of the lot.
Closing 10 schools as of now, more to come.
If you work at a busy school I think that
some of the people should band together and
let the students know what is going on. They
are the ones who are going to get fucked a second
time. You have all been fucked over so many times
that it should be called raped.

Well, if you look at what I said more carefully, I said I don't think you could get VERY FAR in improving your teaching skill at Nova.

Sure, you can do what you said and try to improve your teaching, and see if the students get what you're trying to teach them. Sooner or later however, you're going to need an outside, expert opinion on your teaching, as opposed to your own assumptions (and maybe pretensions) about yourself, plus proper training to further your skills.

Next to none of the Trainers etc I came across at Nova had the ability to do that. Even the ones who did have some genuine teaching credentials didn't seem too bothered about it. These were the things "in the air" at Nova that "neutralized one's ability to improve on things" to quite an extent.

To quote what you said, "if you think the teaching profession has any worth at all", you work for a company that itself thinks the teaching profession has any worth. Nova didn't think that, and didn't care about you improving your teaching ability. They only cared about getting as much money as they could off students, even if it stuffed everyone else in the process.

The inability to appreciate these points are yet another indication that one needs a "reality check".

In the one, Sahashi was busily screwing over all his employees to feed his almighty ego.

In the other, Ono was screwing over all his employees to feed the almighty dollar. Ahem. Ahem. Yen!

The second one was the more American, so I picked it.

Ahhggg! A third dream of Enron! what have I done?!?!

On the other hand, word is three new schools are opening this month/early march in south osaka. Where did the ten schools close?

Those of you who think you have the right to tell anyone, let alone an instructor of 10 yrs, to go home need a good kick in the teeth. He's right in his criticism of the government and japanese society as a whole. Under a so-called 'democratic system' the same party has been in power almost without change for the last 50 yrs. The ruling class has done such a crap job of looking after it's own people it can hardly be overly accomodating to foreigners. This is not to say that japan is unique in having a dark side, it may well be that foreigners (those not too naive to look beneath the surface) are more likely to see the crap side of any country because they didn't grow up with the shit that may seem an inevitable part of life to natives. People in japan say 'shou ga nai' quite often.
If you know anything about NOVA, you'd know that teachers who've been with NOVA 10yrs used to get pretty decent raises every year, meaning Nokimo's salary would be almost double that of newer instructors. That's a good reason to stay so long, (esp if he was married?) he was never going to get that anywhere else. They put him on standby because he was expensive and older.
But there's an instructor of similar experience where i work who got reinstated after hassling the buchou. He just said he was talking to his lawyer and asked the buchou to put everything in writing. He also gave him some grief in the 'interview', and I guess Suzuki Buchou felt like shit afterwards, cause he later wrote a letter to the guy's wife apologizing for causing so much stress.

You're Japanese, are you defending your own government? do you read the news? I hate my country's government too but at least we change the ruling parties more than once a every fifty years when they're doing a shit job.

Paragraphs are great, but point-form's for people who can't write interesting paragraphs.

On the off-chance that anyone's still reading this thread and the even smaller chance that anyone actually gives two hoots what I have to say:

I wasn't comparing the working conditions or the 'prestige' of JET with those of Nova or other eikaiwas, just the salaries. Things changed quite significantly when Nova changed their definition of working hours a couple of years back, but before then there wasn't much difference in salary between Nova and JET. I know because I actually took a small pay cut when I moved from Nova to JET a few years ago.

I don't know anything about graduate opportunities in Canada or the USA but if an average graduate can make that much per month in the first year then great, good on you boys and girls. All I know is that the average graduate in the UK takes home less (in the first year of course) than a JET participant... partly that's due to taxes, but it also reflects that the JET package is pretty decent... and of course my point was that the old Nova package wasn't much different in financial terms.

I'm not sure how I was dismissing the fact that "eikaiwa's do suck, pretty obvious by this point. And a lot of foreigners suck as well". I would tend to agree with that, which I think is quite obvious from my original post.

I suppose the thing that really made me post in the first place is summed up by your comment that 5 years in eikaiwa "doesn't look like anything other then pure laziness and mediocrity". It seems to me that there are only two reasons why anyone would stay in any job for a long period of time: Either they like it, or they can't find anything better. In either case I don't see how throwing accusations of "laziness and mediocrity" contributes to the discussion in any way, shape or form.

Hmmm, not a single teacher has called in sick where I work, but there may be cancellations because they put half our instructors on standby after staff had already taken bookings based on the original number of teachers, 3 weeks in advance. Sure we had a lot of frees but i heard this has caused some headaches. Maybe this fax is a pre-manufactured excuse for student complaints to come? I don't beleive that number ... actually I'm not entirely convinced the fax is genuine. Anyone else see it? It didn't appear in our office.

Anyone have any more information on this?

It baffles me that anyone would even consider working for g cum in these circumstances, but I am not going to get into that.

The last thing I would be worried about is the students though. How many of them do you think loose any sleep over what happens to you? More than that, you know what they say about a fool and his money. Anyone dumb enough give g cum large sums of cash now needs to have that money taken off their hands before they do something really dangerous with it!

I've heard about this rumour as well. My source is from a disgruntled former titled instructor. Sorry, can't confirm or prove any truth to this but I am going to make an effort to warn as many students as I can. I hope everyone else does the same.

Here we go again.

SaggingUsagi our branch also has not got that fax. I don't think management would hide it from us because it specifically says to show it to instructors (also it claims that we should call our branches and not head office if we're going to be absent, and we need to know this). I've checked with my AT and he says we still call head office (and he hasn't heard of this fax).

I won't believe such claims of faxes without seeing photos.

If this turns out to be true you can bet that at least one media company will publish this news. It would mean bad news for the company, shock current students, and scare off potential new students.

"A good teacher is a good teacher. If he wants to get better, he will, and no AT, AAM, IAM, etc. can stop him"

Just one more point to add to the discussion we were having above - I don't think this comment is true if you consider the damage to morale that Nova management and company practices did to people.

When you have to put up with a company that's, amongst other things, cut the salary, cut salary increments, gave little real feedback on your teaching, plus managers who acted like they were God's gift, purely because of their title, had an obnoxious attitude, couldn't be bothered doing their job properly, and treated you like kids at times - under these kinds of circumstances, it gets harder and harder to keep your motivation up to improve your teaching and service you provide to the students.

Unless you're very thick-skinned, totally insensitive to the BS going on around you at Nova and absurdly self-motivated, your teaching will ultimately suffer, no question. So I think that, in a sense, ATs and AAMs etc can, inadvertently or otherwise, stop you getting better as a teacher.

I agree. Plus add in the morale-lowering practice of ATs/BTs taking your free lessons (often only a couple of minutes before the lessons are due to start). Oh, and also the evaluation inconsistency between different ATs/BTs. That all adds up to little motivation to improve or put in a lot of effort. Teaching 8 lessons a day of listening to incorrect English is quite draining mentally. And unlike other office jobs you have to concentrate a lot which is also draining.
In my case I can't get any more salary increments (without becoming a titled instructor). Should I strive to keep improving my teaching style? Only if I'm a masochist.

Exactly - I don't understand why certain Nova careerists slag off other teachers for not trying to improve, or for not giving a shit about their job - the company creates an attitude amongst teachers of not giving a shit about the job, and does nothing to change or discourage that attitude.

I can see the argument that, if you want to stay at Nova, you should try and improve anyway for your own sanity, self-respect, or personal desire to improve. But like I said, it gets more and more difficult to keep the motivation up to do that.

And the bottom line is, just as all those naughty teachers couldn't give a shit about doing their jobs properly, the fact is, Nova couldn't give a shit about it either.

Nova LMP's were a big reason for not improving as an english teacher/instructor.
That and the management of my branch.
They made you stick so rigidly to the Nova 'on rails' technique that you really didn't have the choice to get creative with your teaching.
Management watching like hawks to report any irregularity and the occasional complaint didn't help either.
I actually thought that alot of Novas techniques were crap, and if they make it difficult for you to move away from their 'model' of teaching.....what are you supposed to do?
I spent a year and seven months in Japan, worked with Nova for most of it. As far as my relations with the company/management were concerned, it'd be filed under, 'only the depth varies'.
Mostly because I didn't often adhere to their LMP's and techniques.

By the way, I am a teacher over here in Aus and doing well at it, I didn't run home with my tail between my legs, I came to Japan for the experience and to straighten myself out and am possibly going to return as an ALT.
I love Japan as a place and made alot of friends and had a good time.
In spite of working for Nova.

Pablo

If you do return, make sure you get hired directly by a Board of Education, so companies like Interac don't pocket your holiday pay, don't pocket your national health insurance allowance (give you travel insuracne instead), and don't eat into your hourly pay rate.

The scam they run - they undercut what the Government Instrumentality would have to pay you legally, by about 2%, and then cut the salary they give to you from that amount by around 30%. You get a shit wage, no pay during your holidays, insurance you would not wipe you bum with - the money the Board of Education gave them to cover that - that's their profit.

Cunning little fuckers, aren't they?

Oh, they bluff the Boards of Education into hiring their services, by saying foreigners are very unreliable (unpredictable "Gaigin Scum"), and that even if one of their ALT's is sick, or abscent for any reason, they will supply another one.

Some Boards of Education still do hire directly, and if you can't find one that does, go for JET.

My interview with the JET people is in 12 days time.

Wish me luck.

:)

Pablo
