That Sucking Sound

Ahead of GEOS's Wednesday scheduled announcement of the measures they will take in response to the closure of its schools in Australia, will Tsuneo Kusunoki address the giant sucking sound that everybody is hearing?

Adelaide Now:

Meanwhile, a former director of GEOS Adelaide said the company acted as cash cow for the Japanese parent company.

Gary Maserow, who resigned in October, said he had "no idea" why GEOS Adelaide and eight other Australian GEOS companies went into voluntary administration.

Six of the nine companies recorded profits in the last financial year, according to financial reports completed by BDO Kendalls.

Mr Maserow, who was also regional co-ordinator for all GEOS colleges in Australia and New Zealand, said there was "enormous pressure" placed on the company to send Australian profits to Japan.

"Japan demanded and demanded," Mr Maserow said.

Dharmadasa Ratnayake Mudiyanselage, a director of the nine Australian companies, said the companies had liquidity problems.

Mr Maserow said he had "no idea" why all of the companies went into voluntary administration.

"What happened in the last six months?" Mr Maserow said. "Because the audit was fine."

Mr Maserow dismissed suggestions the global financial crisis had contributed to the collapse.

The Australian GEOS companies had two other directors at the time of the collapse: David Emert and Japan-based Tsuneo Kusunoki, who founded GEOS in 1973.

Mr Emert and Mr Kusunoki did not respond to calls.

Administrators Ernst & Young are continuing to investigate the collapse.

Let's recap that passage:

  • GEOS Japan demanded and demanded.
  • Six of nine GEOS Australia companies recorded profits last year, although one director says they had liquidity problems.
  • The former director of GEOS Adelaide doesn't know where the money went.
  • The former director of GEOS Adelaide doesn't even know why the schools went into voluntary administration because the "audit was fine."

Healthy companies don't keel over and die over night. It would take an act of supreme stupidity on GEOS's part to siphon so much money out of its Australian schools that it would kill a popular and profitable part of its business. This suggests that there are more seriously underlying problems at GEOS. Is GEOS seriously hard up for cash? Or has Kusunoki seen the writing on the wall and chosen to line his pockets?

The stories out of Australia don't seem to match Kusunoki's assertions that the closures are a made-in-Australia problem and that everything's just fine in Japan. When the director of a school doesn't even know what happened and the people who presumably do aren't returning calls, something is wrong. Where did the money go? Moreover, if GEOS is so demanding, which overseas schools are next? Asia? North America? Europe?

Tomorrow, Mr. Kusunoki has to make some effort at helping the students he robbed of their language studies, but also needs to address the issue of the money if he intends to restore any trust in the GEOS brand.

Comments

"Well, we were doing fine but the foreign teachers we hired unfortunately turned out to be pondlife with as much professionalism as a mosquito." Smart thinking there, Luke.

...who cares! GEOS will be closed, hopefully you will have wised up and no longer be in the eikaiwa racket. Because your in the middle of it now, it seems like a big deal, but you will look back on this and just laugh at what a ridicious circuis it was. Unless you're from AU, nobody in your homeland has any idea, nor gives a damn about what GEOS is, or the English teaching industry in Japan. No matter what amount of effort you but forth GEOS will sink, and the Eikaiwa industry will continue to suck and get worse.

-Luke

So why are you here Luke? Is it your life long goal in life to be all selfrightions about Eikaiwa, or living in Japan. I think you have problems deep down that need some work. Maybe you should comne here and work as an eikaiwa teacher. come on admit it thats what you really want.

Even openly talking about it, as long as you don't say anything that isn't already out there in the news, then I don't think they have a case against you.

Get real. Haven't you seen enough of this company doing stuff it shouldn't do already? If you are desperate to keep your job, then don't be blatant in what you say until the point when everyone is doing it because it's nearly all over. If you are not desperate to keep your job, then say what you like and leave.

What is to Stop Geos Saying you forgot your Jacket, You spoke about inaproprate topics in class, your classes are boring etc and fire you. quite leagally.

Simple - you keep a close eye on every single thing your boss says or does, from when they walk in in the morning to when they go home. Compile a private list - a "dirty dossier" of anything they say or do that doesn't live up to the standards laid down in the evaluation procedure.

Then if he says, "Excuse me, you forgot your jacket on Monday, we're going to punish you for it", you turn round to him and tell him of a time when he came in not dressed or groomed properly - maybe he had dirty shoes one morning, or was unshaven on another or whatever.

What are they going to be able to do? They're the boss and they're setting the standards - so if he comes in with a stubbly face and matted hair one day, he's not in a position to expect you to be well-groomed every single day either. If they can't accept that, then they're guilty of double standards. If he keeps going at you about stuff, point out more of his misdemeanours - and so on.

That's the way you should play it - fight them tooth and nail. They usually don't live up to the standards that they're trying to enforce.

Yeah Right, You are living a fantasy on this site Anti Geos Troll. You really need to get a life!!!!!

Get real. Haven't you seen enough of this company doing stuff it shouldn't do already?

I seem to have caused quite a stir with these comments...

Like I said, they have to justify sacking you, or even punishing you. Can you explain to me what reason they'd have for taking action against you for, say, telling students which websites have information about GEOS Australia on them? What misdemeanour have you committed?

If they start being a prick to you in other ways (you forgot your jacket/discussed an inappropriate topic), refer to my previous "Fight them tooth and nail" post. Fight back and do not give up. If you haven't got the stomach for any of that, then carry on getting shat on and screwed over by them. I hope you enjoy it.

"However, to at least direct students to websites like The Age, or the Australian, where there are news articles about GEOS that anyone can read, in the "public domain", or videos about it that have been posted, then I don't see how that can be grounds for dismissal.

Even openly talking about it, as long as you don't say anything that isn't already out there in the news, then I don't think they have a case against you."

Even if its public domain, the teachers actions would be seen as degrading the GEOS image and therefore against the contract the teacher signed with the company at the start. Which would be grounds for termination.

Referring students to websites that have stories about GEOS on them is degrading the GEOS image?? You could probably argue that one all day.

Anti Geos Troll,

I'm wetting myself laughing at your nonsense. Pull your head in, get a life, get real, and stop trying to act like some kind of macho, John Rambo of eikaiwa.

So why are you here Luke?

Shits and giggles....
Some people like to watch DVDs of bums being paid to fight each other, some people like Jerry Springer, my guilty pleasure is Let's Japan.

-Luke

And my guilty pleasure is acting out my testosterone-fuelled, John Rambo fantasies on Lets Japan.

I'm waiting to read a press release or speech reported in the paper from a Geos spokesperson who actually can write correct English. To the Geos drones who closed the Adelaide branch - what the hell were you thinking putting out such a crappy statement on the net? It reads as if it were written by people who need to STUDY English as a foreign language, not teach it.

Sorry but I don't have sympathy for people getting paid to work in such an organisation when you can't even get the most basic English grammar right. Frankly your English sucks and you should never have had a job in EFL or ESL in the first place.

Hi. I can guarantee you that if a student came back to your manager and asked him/her why their teacher had been talking about the company failing you would be out of there within the hour. Every language school, eikaiwa or otherwise has a clause int heir contract specifically for dealing with this.. something along the lines of 'bringing the company into disrepute'.

I can guarantee you that if a student came back to your manager and asked him/her why their teacher had been talking about the company failing you would be out of there within the hour.

I don't think it's as cut and dried as that. Bringing the company into disrepute is one thing, referring to facts as reported in the press is another (if you trust the press). And mentioning that students might like to do some Internet news website searches for GEOS for homework, for some extra reading practice, is yet another.

Every language school, eikaiwa or otherwise has a clause int heir contract specifically for dealing with this.. something along the lines of 'bringing the company into disrepute'.

Umm, dude - I think GEOS and it's management have already destroyed any positive reputation the company previously had - it is impossible to further bring the company into disrepute! Let's be honest here - the reputation of GEOS is now mud.

I'd seriously doubt that GEOS managers - with all the fires they are currently trying to put out - would give a hoot about a teacher talking about an Australian news story that involves their company. In the final months of NOVA, students used to ask questions all the time and the teachers left who had some scruples had no problem discussing it. It's called honesty - and customers always appreciate that.

My advice to GEOS teachers - be honest in discussing and presenting the news of GEOS' troubles- there is no need to "protect" the image of your company - they sure as hell won't be protecting you guys!

Well, well...look what I found this morning. I found a post on kuchikomi about an alcoholic GEOS teacher. Allow me to translate.

I was a GEOS student until last week. My last teacher was on the job for 4 months and frequently came to class drunk, wore dirty clothes and smelled awful. The students and myself complained to the manager several times but she ignored us.

What happened to the quality of GEOS teachers??

I was a student at GEOS for 7 years and in the past year we had 3 teachers, which one of them lasted just one week.
I was in a World Passages class and as of November 2009 there were 7 students in the class, as of today we have all left and we all reuqested refunds.

With the problems at Australia GEOS and GEOS Japan, I cannot trust anybody in the company.

The quality of GEOS teachers is in decline and the school managers are liars.

Wow!! Thats gotta hurt GEOS teachers!! Straight from a GEOS student who has had enough! It looks like the alcoholic/dirty teacher ran off the students in that World Passages class....7 refunds in 3 months!! Thats painful. Has GEOS stooped to a new low to hire scabs to relace the once `professional` teachers at GEOS?? Looks like it.

If you doubt my translation GEOS teachers, please ask your school manager to translate for you.

oops..I forgot the link to the alcoholic GEOS teacher.

shit, funny in the head, if it was on the internet - it must be true!

nothing fishy there at all - i guess the recruiting ads these days say "smelly alcies welcome". and management policy is to ignore complaints from students. yeah - that happens all the time.

if you've found anything, i think it's evidence of a smear campaign by the opposition.

There are a ton bad comments from former and current GEOS stuents. I could post alot more, but I will post one or two a day on LJ.

On Kuchikomi, GEOS is ranked number 1 for hits by a wide margin. GEOS went straight to the top of the rankings after GEOS Australia went down.

Fighting tooth and nail is a total waste of time, unless of course you enjoy that kind of thing for its own sake. Either you want the job or you don't: it's as simple as that.

I completely agree to every point mentioned in your comments. I managed one of the GEOS Australian schools and the way we were treated for the work we did in incomprehensible for anyone who did not witness want went on at various management meetings and V-chats. The way we were treated for doing a very, very good job was disgusting. The Australian operation could easily have been one of the greatest success stories of ELICOS in Australia if Mr Kusunoki would have listened to his General Managers instead of abused them for their good work. One of his more famous remarks to a Manager who may have reached a target or done well in one way or another was "- It is not good enough!!!" and after that he just increased the target.

Before I resigned I warned staff and agents about the situation with Mr K at the helm. As long as he was in control the schools would go down. Most of the staff at the school I managed was aware of the situation and had the opportunity to quit before it all went down.

Don't blame teachers, non-teaching staff or Managers for the demise of the company. It is all the Directors fault by sending money to Japan.

I do hope the whole company folds!!!!!!

In the final months of NOVA, students used to ask questions all the time and the teachers left who had some scruples had no problem discussing it. It's called honesty - and customers always appreciate that.

That's exactly it. You don't have to slag the company off, you can keep it professional by talking about what's already been printed in the media. As long as you get your facts straight, then that's not bringing the company into disrepute. Students seem to have already picked up on this story anyway. GEOS know they can't keep a lid on this.

Which State were u in mate, cos we never got no warning at our school from any manager. In retrospect, at our school the manager simply gave the nod to one or two of their close bum chums. So much for mateship and the Australian work ethic. Still, it all comes around in the end, don't it?

And mate, put us ex-GEOS staffers out of our misery, how come some Japanese guy 5,000 ks away on video could get you tough Aussie managers crapping in your panties and having a good cry? We just shake our collective furgin heads at your collective weakness. Argh, too much monkey business.

Fighting tooth and nail is a total waste of time

Not a TOTAL waste of time. If you keep taking it to them, there's always a chance you might get somewhere.

What IS a total waste of time is sitting on your arse, doing nothing about it and letting them shit all over you. Unless you actually enjoy being shat on and slatted up the rear end by your manager.

Some people like to watch DVDs of bums being paid to fight each other, some people like Jerry Springer, my guilty pleasure is Let's Japan.

I don't think the opinions of such people are worth a cup of three day old coffee, so if you're anything like them it's probably safe to dismiss anything you say as total crap.

Dream on AGT. Collective action can achieve things on some occasions, yes. Individual posturing might win you a few hundred thousand yen in a lawsuit, if you're lucky. Big deal. There are a hell of a lot easier ways to make money.

@23:44, a lot of people don't have the stomach for the fight to stand up for themselves, either by not letting their boss shit on them, or getting out of there and into a better job. That's why they end up stuck in eikaiwa for years and go nuts.

Anyone who wants to do that, be my guest. Enjoy yourself.

I don't think the opinions of such people are worth a cup of three day old coffee, so if you're anything like them it's probably safe to dismiss anything you say as total crap.

HA! What you think is completely irreverent. What you do, your actions every day is what you are. What do you do? GEOS teacher? HA! That means you spend most of your days in a miserable cubicle “teaching” miserable “curriculum” to miserable customers. All the while hoping and praying you’ll receive a pay check this month. I’m sure you think you’re some type advanced intellectual, because of what you learned in college and think the “deep conversations” you have in the break room with the other rejects, who think they are smart, are meaningful. I hate to break to you, but you’re all a bunch of miserable twats in a miserable company and miserable industry.

-Luke

HA! What you think is completely irreverent. What you do, your actions every day is what you are. What do you do? GEOS teacher?

You'd like to think that, wouldn't you. All you seem to do, though, is come on sites like this and parrot stuff that everyone has heard before. A lot of it is perfectly valid but I'm not even sure it's really your opinion. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if you work for GEOS yourself as you seem to know an awful lot about the kind of people you might find there, and are so desperate to keep your job that you're happy to log on here and rant crap so that your managers have a good excuse for saying that the company collapsed because the teachers are all useless pricks. Nothing better to do with yourself at 2:36am?

Nothing better to do with yourself at 2:36am?

....Or I work in New York, where I have a computer and time to check this forum and make fun of you. Someday you'll get a real job, with your very own computer.

-Luke

Luke, you little bottler, yer a veritable genius of the first water!!! Tha's it!!!! You've iedntified the very very very worst thing about working in the industry!!!! It's the bloody "deep conversations" around the lunch table. True, true, so true...oh, god, the horror of it all.....

Does that make GABA a real job then???

A miserable wet Saturday here in Sydney. And I'm ruminating and cogitating. What was the final straw that brought GEOS Oceania down. Was it just the money bleed to Tokyo? Was it the new audit regime that the Federals brought in last year? Was it the Victorian agency catching the company shuffling money around? What u think was the final straw that broke the camel's back?

"Was it the Victorian agency catching the company shuffling money around?"

What? They're shuffling money around, between different times in history? (Victorian and now)

Can these crooks sink any lower, than by trying to hide their ill-gotten profits, by sending them back in time?

Thank God the Victorians had the sense to notice this dastardly stunt. Good Old Scotland Yard!

I think it was the Aussie authorities investigating that gave GEOS cold feet. But shouldn't have prompted a collapse of that kind of proportion. I think that there has been something else going on in combination with the money bleed to Tokyo. You can bang on about how badly GEOS are run (it's true) but something went horribly wrong, even by their standards. It'll all play out, and we'll see.

Oh, and Luke is a NY office worker? What are you, a banker? - I thought you said you were higher up the food chain than the Eikaiwa teachers? Seriously, you make some good points mate, but I wouldn't have revealed that. :0

LOL

....Or I work in New York, where I have a computer and time to check this forum and make fun of you. Someday you'll get a real job, with your very own computer.

-Luke

If you're using a computer at work just to post rants about a shit job you had a while back, it's quite clear that you're no more professional than you were when you were working in eikaiwa. It also appears as if the whole eikaiwa thing left you with some issues that you need to work on. I mean, most people who spend any time working for GEOS, AEON, NOVA or any places like that just finish their contracts, dismiss it all as a bit crap and never look back. But you can't seem to help wanting to tell us how glad you are that you moved on, almost as if you didn't really want to move on at all. So what's the story there, Luke? You didn't get fired by any chance? Possibly something to do with having a piss-poor attitude and just being crap at the job, even by eikaiwa standards?

Anyway, you're a boring topic. Anyone got any more information about what's happening with GEOS?

So what went horribly wrong there in Australia at the end of January? We've got some clues:

Federal audits on the go
State agencies (eg Victoria) sniffing around
Money flow to Tokyo
Inexperienced new managers and admin staff
Allegations that money was being shuffled between schools (borrowings for wages?)
CEO and his attitude
Schools "on the market" eg Manly, NSW
Fee discounting
Allegations (per LJ post) that money was running out by 5 February
Chatter on the net about GEOS
General economic situation.

But what was the final straw to pull the pin on the Aussie business and render it zero value?? What's the real buzz?

In Auckland GEOS a small bus company is owed $13000 NZ and after strong representations managed a payment of $5000 with a promise of more to come (2 days ago) Until about 2 months ago payments were regular, but then became late. A staff member said payment had to be delayed 'because there aren't enough funds' Why would agents send to a school that can't pay such small bills? Huge risk factor.
Australia of course is now closed due to those disloyal Australian staff.
Does anyone have anecdotal (especially finance related) informaton on GEOS Europe or North America? (Agents not sending, slow bill payments, late rents, downturn in numbers?) For every failing company has signs - First student money is raided, then trade creditors are delayed, then utilities and landlord, then admin staff and then teachers (It is over at this stage) Tax departments and teacher holiday pay are invariably left short.
One other aspect of interest is that remaining GEOS managers should remember the laws of their country. Are they likely to go to prison if they knowingly divert funds or trade recklessly? Also of course if they intend to carry on working in the industry, their loyalties now might lie with their future employers. It might be easier to face an angry Mr K than an angry public, media and prosecutor in future.

you stupid dick, it wasnt the managers that sent the money to Japan, it were the three directors, the managers never had direct control of their own finances, GMS did, the accounting firm also in administration. Get your facts right, as I was/am one of those "disloyal Australian Managers",

Angry, redundant, and clearly 'disloyal' Aussie managers, Don't get mad - get even. You can have the moral satisfaction of passing on the facts of what happened in Australia. Eg
Using school databases to email link to 'Let's Japan - Shawn's blog' to every agent in the world
Competitor school marketing staff can mention the word 'bankrupt and GEOS' in same sentence while they are marketing.
Post information on all Japanese blogs
If you bonded together and passed around the hat you could send a disaffected staff member to every GEOS international school with a placard getting news coverage. Maybe even protest outside GEOS Japan schools.
'Give back our $10 million Mr K' Or whatever else your side of the story is. Or cheaper- get willing teacher friends in those countries to do a bit of protesting.

If you don't do something, the Japanese public at least will probably continue to believe that a great Japanese company was bought down by some unscrupulous and disloyal Aussies who GEOS had foolishly use their brand. You can lie there in bitter shock - or you could organise - or quietly move on and let history blame you for the collapse (possibly)

How would you feel if GEOS internationally pulled together and somehow scraped through this? It is possible, but not likely if their customers lost trust.

Schools who have been forced to carry the load of free GEOS students have a lot of marketing people on the road. Competitor chain schools are particularly well place to get information out. In doing so, they may actually prevent more students and staff from being ripped off.

Better still angry 'disloyal' Aussie manager. Get a $400 cheap Jetstar fare Sydney / Brisbane to Auckland plus say $00 expenses for 4 days. Pass the hat around - you would be surprised how many GEOS enemies there are. Start with the Gold Coast airport pick-up guy who is presumably an unsecured creditor. Walk in to GEOS at coffee - meet the teachers then with media present (or not) unveil a placard demanding holiday pay for all Aussie workers or whatever you need. Or just the $10 million. Better still get forcibly evicted by police with media watching. Funny, I never thought of Aussies as people who would just lie down and get screwed! You can talk to all the students outside the school and visit agents, regulators and so on.

Ah, a variant of the Nuremberg Defense. Probably ain't going to wash. If ASIC or the Australian Taxation Office start nosing around, the schools, they will be looking for banking transfer authorisations and document stuff like that. Forensic accountants are just as interested in the beginning as in the end of the money trail. HoHum, what a life.

It seems there were inexperienced new managers in Australia at the very end - pardon me for being lost and just not getting it, why did they just sit there accepting new enrolments knowing how bad things could potentially be - why did they not shout/scream/warn others/LEAVE.....???

See, the elephants are back in the room and questions are being asked that some do not like-why did GEOS Australia managers simply keep quet over the last 6 or 9 months?

Another stupid comment, we all did, but at what stage do say to staff to jump and be the one to create the Tsunami, especially when Japan was continuously promising money to be returned. It is easy to sit in judgment when you weren't there, highnsights always the best argument. And another thing, since Australia has gone done, have there been any resignations, no. If you had been at the final management meeting all of those questions were asked and if you had read this forum, those questions have already been answered. Learn to read

OK, anonymous @20.37, tell us all..when was the meeting...who was there...what was said....

I already have. All Principals from Australia and their respective marketing assistants. For the first day and a half time was wasted discussing the next 6 months and about an hour before the end of the second day, the topic of exactly the financial position of each school was discussed and if I didn't receive any answers that I believed to adequate I was going to go back on the Monday and inform my staff, however, the directors beat me to it by stupidly putting all the schools into voluntary administration late on the Friday afternoon, mainly, in my opinion to not make the books look even worse as a lot of money was needed by the following Friday to meet creditors and wages. If you have questions, address them to the 3 criminal directors.

Aussie managers can call other bloggers stupid - but we were not privy to the final management meetings that you were. I have seen on the Gaijin forum a posting by a teacher who states that he believes the explanation that Aussie was a franchise - quite independent of GEOS Japan. Others may believe that the Aussie managers stuffed it up. Get every last anecdote out - send it to your old agent list - send it to the international agent associations. So, those at the last management meeting were mostly new chums??? The smarties had jumped ship by then?

You have nothing to sy but smartass comments about things you know nothing about. Anon you will just go to another thread and post a stupid worthless comment there. Get this, we all know you are so far out of the loop that whatever you say just goes out the window to the big beyond. Like i said before Go play with the traffic!!!!!

Well said that man

(Disclaimer: I do not speak Japanese and used google. But I am sure the themes are real. Perhaps someone can do better at getting some real translations with real meaning. But the drift is clear: Japanese bloggers are not buying the ridiculous official GEOS spin on events in Australia. This doesn't look good for confidence in GEOS Japan

..One person participated in team meetings and was accused of leading to the media
ANother blogger debunking the idea of Japan and Australia being 'separate entities'
Another Japanese I think staff member 'I loved my Aussie school but Kusunoki killed it' GEOS faces a financial crisis'
'Same or another staff member 'had to take more and more money' GEOS Australia was directly managed'
'restructuring to save a dying regime'
' Staff and students could wake up one day to find the schools locked and shuttered'
'Cancel, cancel, terminate immediately'

So what's the story there, Luke? You didn't get fired by any chance?

Fired....Man, I tried like hell to get fired. I'm embarrassed to say, but yes I did work at an Eikaiwa for 9 months. It was when NOVA was tanking. Before heading to Japan, I knew the company was farce, but just wanted to have some shits and giggles for a year after college. I planned on putting up the absurdity for the entire contract, it was tolerable for the pay check to live abroad. The only thing that really got under my skin were morons who treated it like a career or anything but big joke. When we stopped getting paid, I tried my ass off to get fired, so I could receive unemployment, but I swear they had policy against terminating instructors once they stopped paying people. Don’t ask me why…

-Luke

A lot of the managers haven't been paid yet.

Something - a posting on Kuchikomi translated, name of a branch. It is so easy to make this accusation

I cant find anything on Kuchikomi or the Japanese-net about GEOS staff being paid late.

Here is the Japanese keyword you can cut and paste to a Japanese search engine. There is no current information or evidence as of right now that anybody at GEOS is being paid late....but stayed tuned, that could change anytime.
