noticed an update to the GEOS Wikipedia page that was quickly removed:
Recent economic woes have lead Geos to be late paying the Japanese staff in August and September 2009. It is further reported that foreign teachers working at the adult schools were not paid on time in October 2009. Geos is currently asking clients to pay as much as 5 months in advance for the following year's lessons in a bid to raise the necessary funds to meet payroll obligations. This financial distress has led to many Japanese staff members to resign.
The edit in question can be found here.
There may be some truth to this. A thread in a kuchikomi message board wonders the same thing: were the staff late in getting paid? In response to the question, the first post was:
2009/09/22 19:21
Yes!!!!
Head office called me at home to say that they had no money and to wait a week until they can process wire transfers from overs schools.
They don't have any cash to pay staff????
That's unbelievable.
I immediately told my boss that I wanted to quit.
Got rejected...
Other managers I know are scrambling to quit, saying they're pregnant, have to be hospitalized, or their mother has cancer.
I wonder if we'll be paid this month?
I've heard GEOS would be next after NOVA. Looks like it's ready to go under.
Another commented:
2009/09/30 21:44
9/30日本日もお給料入っていませんでした!!!!!
2回目です。NOVAは4回目の社員お給料遅延で破綻。
いったいどうなるんでしょうか。
2ヶ月もお給料遅れるなんてまずいですね。2009/09/30 21:44
It's 9/30 and I haven't been paid !!!!
This is the second time. NOVA went bust after pay was late for the 4th time.
What the hell is going on?
Getting paid late for 2 months running is not good.
Another poster says pay was late for instructors, too:
2009/09/30 22:31
今回は講師も遅れましたね。
今回はシステムエラーなのかミスなのか
、まあどっちでもいいですが、2カ月続いての事なので
「ホントかよ!?」って感じです。2009/09/30 22:31
It happened to the instructors, too.
Whether it was a system error or a mistake, it's happened 2 months in a row. What's up with that?!
Another comment about a "system error:"
2009/09/30 23:26
2009/09/30 23:26
I haven't been paid this month. I got an email from head office saying that it was a system error, but if that's true, it's an inexcusable mistake. I'd rather hear from someone that sales are down and salaries will be late. I'm not up to doing CS [Commission sales] because of this.
Another commenter adds that they finally got paid:
2009/10/05 23:37
9月は1日遅れで入りました!
システムエラーだそうです。
先生が辞める!!!と言い出したのでなだめるのに大変でした><!!2009/10/05 23:37
September's pay was a day late but I got it!
Apparently it was a system error.
Teachers have started saying that they'll quit and I've had a tough time trying to smooth things over!!
Finally, a student chimed in to say:

I'm currently a student at GEOS. I'm thinking about renewing but am having second thoughts
>They ask during renewals, "GEOS isn't going to go bankrupt, right?," but all I could say was," Right now everything is fine."
When I asked the same question, they told me they didn't know and tried to sell me a 6-month contract (?).
The teachers are really good people and I want to continue, but I'm scared to think that things might end up like NOVA where you pay and are then unable to take lessons.
I wonder if they'll go bankrupt by the end of the year?
*I looked up GEOS's finances on their website and found their sales were 16.4 billion yen (for the period ending Dec. '06) but couldn't find any new numbers even though sales figures for FY'08 should be up there.
These are anonymous comments and I have no way of knowing how much truth there is to what's been said. If the "system error" explanation sounds familiar, it's because NOVA used the same excuse to explain why it had not paid their staff.
Can anybody flesh this out some more? Has pay been late for the past two months? Is this just a one-off event or a sign of more serious trouble to come?
This is how the end came for NOVA. First it was the staff, and then it was the instructors not getting paid. If the rumour is true and the staff has been late in getting paid, it's time to start thinking about Plan B. You don't want to repeat the fisaco of ex-NOVA instructors getting re-hired. The moment you don't get paid, get the hell out as fast as you can. You certainly don't want to end up teaching in a park for food.

Dear Just Me,
Please bash it up your ass.

PS I think your time would have been better spent, working on how to find the money that is needed to pay the people who have not been paid, since reports in are that no-one wants to buy your lovely products anymore.
Perhaps you should be look for a sponsor. Hmm? Just an idea.
As a manager at GEOS, I know GEOS has embarked on a company-wide effort to determine the values that best represent our aspirations and conduct as a multi-cultural organization. Reading what has been posted in here, by a limited few no doubt, some people have no idea, and have learned nothing from their time in Japan.
GEOS employees share five basic values:
(1) Respect for the Individual
We treat one another with respect and dignity, appreciating individual, cultural, and national differences. We seek to learn and therefore we listen to one another attentively and compassionately and communicate often and openly. Recognizing that valuable ideas can come from anyone regardless of level or position, we encourage individuals to express their views and use their talent to the fullest. Company policy prohibits discrimination against employees, stockholders, directors, officers, customers or suppliers on account of race, color, age, sex, religion or national origin. All persons shall be treated with dignity and respect.
What kind of respect do I witness in here? Little wonder most of you never manage to step outside of the instructors shoes, in your GEOS journey
(2) Team Spirit
At GEOS, our team spirit binds us together, transcending organizational, functional, and geographic boundaries. We work hard towards a common goal and deliver beyond expectations. We cooperate, collaborate, and empower one another in recognition that a global effort translates into exceptional solutions and services.
Well, most of us do. The minority, the trouble makers, come on to places like Let’s Japan and fire away, anonymously.
(3) Innovation
We constantly strive to redefine the standard of excellence in everything we do. Therefore, we are open to ideas that challenge the convention, seek diversity of views and drive innovation. We encourage both individuals and teams to constantly search for innovative technologies and creative business solutions and recognize their achievements.
(4) Integrity
We are committed to conduct ourselves in a manner consistent with the highest standards of integrity. We are honest, ethical, and fair in all our activities. We keep our word, deliver on our promises, and acknowledge our mistakes. Our personal and business conduct ensure that GEOS is a company worthy of trust.
Fact – no instructor has not been paid.
(5) Our Customers
We are dedicated to creating value for our worldwide customers by developing and providing technologically advanced solutions and services. We build lasting relationships with our customers by listening, understanding, and anticipating our customers’ needs. We are easy to do business with and always strive to be responsive and professional. GEOS customers can trust our commitment to their success.
Fact – GEOS is one of the major language players, globally
SUMMARY
The driving force behind our five values is the One Company One Team organizational pillar.
In all our activities we constantly conduct ourselves respectfully to promote our common goals. We are committed to these values and truly believe that if we adopt and implement them, we will lead the company to success in the future and derive a lot of fun and self-achievement in doing so.
The way I see it, you have two choices. See the light, and be thankful, respectful, and professional, and try harder than ever, or jump on this hysterical doom and gloom bandwagon, that has no substance.
The choice is yours.
The way I see it, you have two choices. See the light, and be thankful, respectful, and professional, and try harder than ever, or jump on this hysterical doom and gloom bandwagon, that has no substance.
Well "Professional", it's all well and good that you repeat the company line about respect, integrity and the like. But can you now live up to your professed values and explain:
Why have the Japanese staff been paid late twice in a row?
Will Japanese staff be paid on time this month?
Will instructors be paid on Friday?
There's some serious substance in the rumours - Japanese staff have been paid late twice in a row, and this mirrors the beginnings of other eikaiwa and company collapses, such as Nova.
Expecting instructors and staff to be all positive about their job, and work harder than ever, is pretty futile given the rumours abounding on message boards like this, and the lack of transparency from the company.
I await your response with interest.
1. Don't quit. You can collect unemployment IF Geos has paid you into the program (might want to check on that). Coupled with the fact that you will get 80% of your unpaid wages back if you stick with it to the bitter end, this will pay you back.
2. Stay genki with your students, and make sure you get their contact information. Don't explicitly state you want them to take your lessons after Geos goes bankrupt (remember, the culture is much more subtle than what we are used to, and if you are subtle as well, you can get a ton of students).
3. Remain professional. If students see you keep your standards in the face of a crisis, they are much more likely to support you in your endeavors after/if the company goes bankrupt.
4. Hedge your bets. Assume the company will go bankrupt and act accordingly. Also assume the company will stay solvent and act accordingly. It's a fine line, but doable if you have a brain.
5. Do what you have got to do, and stay under the radar. The less attention you draw to yourself, the better. Acting like the hero will get you immediate props with coworkers, but where will they be when you need cash?
6. Support staff make the world go 'round. You'd be amazed at the information and help a polite "good morning" and a few boxes of chocolate will do for you.
7. Remember that 500 years from now, no one will remember you or your problems. On the surface, this may seem depressing, but actually it is quite liberating. As Camus said, the ultimate goal in life is, "to live a good life and die a good death." That's all we got, folks. Keep it in perspective.
That's my advice. I survived the Nova crash and these are some things I did or wish I had done. Hope this helps. Best of luck to all of you going through this.
Whether you like it or not, "Professional", word of mouth, rumours, and people jumping on the "bandwagon" are part and parcel of Japan. Many, many bigger and better companies than late-paying GEOS have gone down on this basis.
It is admirable of you to staunchly defend your company - as did Nova's management as it was going down. Heck, you probably even wear a GEOS suit lapel every day. I recall the expressions "Nothing to see here", "The money will be in the bank to be transferred tomorrow", "Hold on a bit longer - do it for the students".
But let me make this very clear: YOU are completely dispensible. What are the Nova Gaijin "Managers" up to these days? Thats right, piss-farting around with G-Con, and the others pissed off back home with their tails between their legs.
At the end of the day, why not start showing some respect for the Japanese staff who have been paid late TWICE. Stop living in the Gaijin GEOS bubble and wake up to reality. You talk of "Integrity", stating that "GEOS is a company worthy of trust." To whom? The Japanese who were paid late? The students who have invested big money in their "education" and are now concerned - legitimately - that they have pissed it up against a wall?
Fact: You are a company stooge who is speaking complete and utter nonsense.
Yeah, what a load of shit. GEOS is totally NOT responsive to its customers needs. Case in point: Text Books
GEOS provides its teachers and students with text books from the 1990s. Here are the books and first editon publishing dates.
J-Club--1995
Sprint 3,4, 5, 6 7, 8----1997
Millinium A, B---1999
All books above are GEOS printed books, which include out-dated photos, statisics, culturally insensitive activities, lacks educational substance, and just plain cheap looking.
-----------------------------------------
Non-GEOS books include:
Business Solutions--oxford 1999
Passages---cambridge 2000
Headways--oxford 2004
World Pass--oxford 2006
same as GEOS text books, out-dated photos and statisics. Students can certainly tell they have been ripped-off. MY students would rather spend time reading over the Mainichi weekly or Japan times than read crap text books GEOS provides. Props, yeah students really dig props. Printing out poorly drawn pictures and poorly designed activities for the GEOS textbooks looks cheap and it does NOT improve student ability. GEOS should have invested a long time ago in quality books and should have retired these out-dated trashy books. Students are know when they are being screwed and when they are getting a deal. Students are defenitely getting screwed at GEOS, there is sooo much a teacher can do with these shitty books.
So, yeah providing technologically advanced solutions
thats a goal of GEOS by providing outdated materials at sky-high prices!
Hang on,
You make a fair comment, bash a few reputable textbooks (not the GEOS ones, before you start!) ... then go on to say that you teach from... the Japan Times...? C'mon seriously? or is that just an example to show how bad the GEOS books are?
Sorry, I know that's off topic, good luck to the GEOS teachers, enjoying reading the board blah-blah and all that.. but C'mon. really?
Can someone start a poll: Who will get paid by GEOS on Friday Oct 30, 2009?
or Will anyone be paid by GEOS on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009?
7. Remember that 500 years from now, no one will remember you or your problems. On the surface, this may seem depressing, but actually it is quite liberating. As Camus said, the ultimate goal in life is, "to live a good life and die a good death." That's all we got, folks. Keep it in perspective.
are you kidding, 5 months from now, no one will remember...
You're a bit of a tool aren't you?
How many years have you been at Geos? When Geos fails, what are you going to do, and how much are going to be paid? Start asking yourself the difficult questions, and realize that you sold your soul to the devil, and now he's coming to collect.
I agree that there needs to be some regulation of the eikaiwa industry in japan. But more than that, there needs to be enforcement of the law. These eikaiwa companies that are dropping like flies all over the countries these days are exploiting the japanese public and the foreigners who come to japan to work for them. Japanese companies like these make doing business with Japanese look bad and their economy suffers because of it. I heard that a consumer watchdog agency was only recently started in Japan. Too little, too late.
Organize and strike now or work to rule or whatever. The situation has got to change!
GEOS
1. The unpaid non-teaching hours
2. The incorrect reporting of hours worked on paychecks
3. The constant harassment and threats by Head Office and their underlings
4. Their overbooking of students in classes when student contracts specify an explicit maximum number
5. Their overbooking of classes on teachers' schedules when teacher contracts specify an explicit maximum number.
6. Their illegal requirement of a 4 month notice to the company when terminating employment.
7. Their fraudulent tactics in regards to End of Contract Bonuses.
I truly hope that GEOS will be fine but if it is true that the staff have been paid late 2 weeks in a row then it's pretty obvious that it's not going to be.
Just a bit of advice to teachers
Don't quit, it's easier to get unemployment benefits quickly if you wait until you lose your job and it's not your choice.
Use all your remaining paid holidays now. You might assume that the company wont keep attendance records during a bankrupcy but this is Japan, some people will be working till the bitter end and keeping these records. If the company pays you for all sick days great, if not then if you get salary replacement from the Government then it'll be less. Best to use your paid holidays up first as they can't really deny these (well they can legally as especially now it could force business operations to cease but it's still a sticking point)
Don't be a dick, it's not big and it's not clever and can turn round and bite you in the ass later on. NOVA teachers who acted like dicks and wanted to be rehired by the neoNOVA G-scum company found they were the first to go when it came time for them to cut down the number of teachers. Sure they all said they were model teachers but who actually believed them except others like them. No be as professional as possible, it can only look good. Either it will have no effect or a good effect. Acting like a dick will have no effect or a bad effect. It's better to cover your bases as you never know what will happen.
Find another job soon. I don't know how many foreigners GEOS hires now but that will mean a flooding of the job market (which is already shit) and any jump you can get on that is worthwhile.
Don't believe the Japanese staff. Sure you might have a "great relationship" with them or you think you do, they are company people and most likely will not tell you important information of they have been told by the company not too.
Don't be overly optimistic, if the company cannot pay you then they are obviously having problems, in the current economic climate this can only too easily spell disaster. Teachers will leave, students wont re-sign and the company will have less money. If they can't pay you now do you think they'll be able to pay you next month?
Advice for the managers
Same as above and also stop lying to yourself and others. Reading things like everything is fine nothing to see here with absolutely nothing to back it up with is ridiculous and shows a total lack of respect to your workers. These rumours may very well turn out to be nothing but rumours but to flat out deny things with nothing to back it up with isn't going to change many people's minds.
Good luck to GEOS. I hope the teachers aren't as dumb as many of the NOVA teachers 2 years ago (pretty much exactly) don't teach for food, teach for money. With money you can buy food :D
Find another job soon. I don't know how many foreigners GEOS hires now but that will mean a flooding of the job market (which is already shit) and any jump you can get on that is worthwhile.
GEOS has about 800 foreign teachers.....but not sure if that includes oversea teachers as well. I also know there are about 2100 staff members in the company, not sure if that includes overseas too.
But either way, and I think things are headed for bad ending and I dearly hope GEOS pays its employees tomorrow.
The problem is, neither sides can show proof. Just rumour.
Or if they try to, others will shout them down.
We can only wait til tomorrow and see what happens.
On one hand, it'll be a bit of an anticlimix (and relief) if we do get paid. On the other, I'm sure people will start saying "next month."
I'll post in the morning if the ¥ is in the bank. Or if it's not...
I wouldn't be surprised if teachers do get paid tomorrow. Management will have seen these rumours flying around and will pull out the stops to make sure foreign staff are paid on time.
However, I don't know when the Japanese staff get paid, but if they're paid late again, even if instructors are paid on time, that's even more worrying and you should still be thinking about your escape plan.
Yeah...I got my escape plan. Been planning for months and I couldnt have timed it better myself. Im gone as soon as I get paid. Feel real bad for the students, but the students at my school have been lining for refunds as has other schools....not soo many students around anymore, classrooms nearly empty. Most classes have one or two students. My biggest class on my schedule is 3!! Horrible.
NO students= NO money
GEOS is going down sooner or later. Hope it wont be tomorrow.
Sayonara GEOS!!!
The managers get paid tomorrow, same as the Natives.
As ripper said, even if the Natives get paid tomorrow, I'm interested if the managers do - 3 months in a row? trouble.
And just so we don't forget, it was the Union who recommended the 'teach-for-food' bit wasn't it? Not something the NOVA teachers thought of by themselves.
I honestly think the best course of action is to be looking for other alternatives to Geos now, but don't just jump ship at the first offer that comes your way. Try to spend a bit of time thinking about your options and get something at least half-decent. As other posters have said, you should have government assistance to fall back on if you do lose your job.
Ok, it's now Friday. Assuming GEOS gets paid by electronic transfer on midinght of payday (drum roll please)...
did you get paid? I hope so.
Not last month, but the month before I wasn't paid until 11:30am. I needed money at 9am to go to Japanese school, but it wasn't there yet. Last month.... can't remember, but I was paid on the correct day.
The last poster is right - they don't pay at midnight, but around lunch time - don't ask why, that's just the way it is.
Ur, have you been back home lately?!? There are no real jobs opening up back home right now. Im a certified K~6 teacher in Arizona with a masters in education and I'm teaching in a kindergarten in South Korea. The job market is BAD everywhere. If you can hold out for unemployment, do it!!!
If the do go belly up, (and provided your white and from North America) you could always come here. They will pay for your flight over and your salary is generally better. Living here is not as much fun though.
So they did pay late last month, by about 12 hours. That money should be in your bank account at midnight. Any news whether pay's been deposited yet today?
There are no delays in paying wages for this month. Everything is on schedule.
Paid.
Good news that you've been paid. Gives a bit of breathing space.
Any word on whether J-staff have been paid on time?
Don't be stupid.
Paid by midnight. Hah! what country have you been living in? Japan does not have 24hr banking systems.
Dammit! The deathwatch was about to get interesting, too.
I still got Dec. 6 in the deadpool....
Mmwwwaahaahahahahaa...
I'm glad that you got paid, but the fact is GEOS is now a criminal organization; they haven't paid the J-staff, which is against the law. The fact that the J-staff might agree to continue to work there doesn't jusitify what GEOS is doing. I know the foreign staff got paid, but if there was a restaurant in front of you that said "Whites Only", would you go in if you're white, just because it doesn't affect you? No. It's offensive.
If I were working there, I'd find another job just on moral principle alone.
at the moment that makes most companies in Japan criminal - I see even JAL have applied for a government loan. It seems from my slightly unbiased (slightly because I did use to work for GEOS, about 3 years ago and I hope they don't go down) that you're just disappointed that the staff got paid - and that makes you an ass. How would you feel if you were in the same situation?
Seems confirmed that the Foreign teachers are paid... seems like the Japanese staff haven't but can anyone else confirm that?
Also, Midnight? I second the "pah" on that.
that properly - I thought you were just flaming, and apologise - sorry.
You are right, about the not paying thing.
but I stand by my 'pah' about midnight.
ELS has indeed filed for bankrupcy - here was everyone watching GEOS.
I hope it's not true - can anyone confirm ?
No offense taken, although NOVA used to, and my current company does electronically deposit pay at midnight.
Thanks, and sorry again.
just so we know, I'm hearing the managers got paid at 12pm. Ie just now.
In reading a new thread in the GEOS kuchikomi forum, it seems that managers have been paid.
Shawn
GEOS has long had a policy of minimal advertising-with Kaichos idea to rely on word of mouth advertising and save costs. I was at GEOS for two and a half years and in the two schools I worked at the advertising never went beyond posters and the manager handing out tissues. Its not really a big shift if GEOS is stopping what little print advertising they were doing. There was a lot of debate when I was there as to whether this very policy would be a nail in the coffin.
Lets just say I am very very glad I got out when I did. I think the Eikawa bubble burst long ago and that it was only downhill from there. It all got too big, too fast and was a million miles from sustainable. Having said that I recently got my end of contract bonus. I was expecting a big fight on my hands and figured that this would be the first thing to go if GEOS was going to start seriously screwing people over to start cutting costs. Instead it just took a tiny amount of chasing and I gotta defend the guys in charge of that.
So how can they be paying out these bonuses if they are on the verge of going under? It still surprises me that they didnt write this out of the contracts if they saw trouble on the horizon. Surely being able to pay your current staff is more important than an incentive to attract staff that pays them out after they leave. Who seriously sticks around in GEOS for that bonus?
One way or another it was all far to unstable for me and I knew from the poor NOVA staff that I would have little or no rights if push came to shove. For all you guys still in the trenches-if you havent got a plan B yet-now is the time! Iam not saying let them push you out- but ever since NOVA went under people have been stressing about when the hammer would fall at GEOS. Why wait to see what happens?
In reading a new thread in the GEOS kuchikomi forum, it seems that managers have been paid.
And from what I can gather from that thread, it was 3 times that they were paid late.
I thought they got paid today. Still twice is worrying.
But different from NOVA - that went - no bonuses -> Japanese staff not paid -> everyone not paid -> Bankrupt.
From what I can gather, for GEOS it's been - Japanese staff not paid -> again -> everyone paid.
but I think it's still safe to say... firmly in the woods.
I have been at GEOs for a few years now and am also the person who updated the wikipedia article. Although I did not want to cause a huge outcry, I do know that during the whole NOVA debacle wikipedia served as an important voicing ground for those teacher's who were looking for information. These boards can be great and lots of information can be found but what makes Wikipedia important is that we can all change the wording and what you have left is a filtered, cohesive singular story of what is happening. I ask everyone to help keep the wikipedia article intact and correct. Please do not abuse that power because I think we can all agree that baseless rumors is not how we want the company to go down.
I will try not to editorialize but this is what I know (to a reasonable level of certainty):
The Japanese Staff were paid (very slightly.... 1-3 days) late in August, then in September they were paid late again. In September they were paid again. Teachers at the adult schools share the same payday and were also paid late. I have been told that the president was using the late payment as a form of punishment the second time. Since he ordered every branch of the company to pay their own employees separately.
Translation: Geos Kids earned enough money to deserve being paid and the adult schools didn't.
Kids teachers have a different pay day, if someone knows what day that is please let me know, so their payments are on a different schedule anyways.
I know that between the adult schools and kids schools at least 3 foreign managers have quit in the past year for various reasons but no one has been promoted to replace them. From there we can say that Geos has been in a Cash crunch of relative severity since about August 2008. This has led them to cut things ranging from Training, Bonuses, overseas training, school outings, discretionary budgets, etc since that date. I remember a time in summer of 2008 where we weren't allowed to order new markers unless we had asked other schools if they had any half used ones to spare.
When I started with the company it was standard practices to renew contracts with students two months before they expire and it has quickly gone from 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 and now I saw on the boards someone saying 6. I cannot confirm that, though it would not surprise me.
Also the Kids school headquarters moved out of the Shin-Oosaki building into one of the kids schools to save money. Not sure if the adult school's headquarters is in Oosaki still?
Finally although the kids schools are more profitable they do have the crux of being in bed with Itoyokado. Geos has exclusive rights to schools in Itoyokados but are contractually obliged to have a school in every Itoyokado that 7&i holdings requests, they are still opening new schools now while trying to keep the money together to maintain the current schools.
All I am saying is lets try to keep the distilled truth of this debate on the wiki page for easy viewing, please add citations as you can find them so that it is harder to remove summarily by those at the headquarters. Please do not post complete lies because that does not help the teachers, students or company. After all we want to be informed but not spiteful. If I was a gambling person I would say the company will either fail in the Jan-Feb or Aug-Sep 2010 periods. But lets not hasten that!
If you look at the information on this site, I think it's safe to say that they're not out of the woods. I'd say the next 6-12 months will be crucial to see if GEOS can weather the storm and stabilize student numbers. My guess is that there'll be more branch closures and teacher lay-offs/non-renewals of contracts.
I wouldn't sit too comfortably.
Using late pay as punishment is disgusting. This is just one of the reasons I still hate GEOS. They don't advertise and then yell at teachers when not enough new students come in for trial lessons. I hope they go down no matter what. If I still worked for them, I would quit. I wish every teacher at Geos would quit just to punish the idiot, arrogant president for being such a douche.
I hope the president of Geos gets the crap beat out of him someday.
Hmmm, that sounds a bit weird. If the teachers were paid late, it's most likely for the same reasons the J-staff were paid late. The "punishment" line was an excuse for not having the money on time to pay everyone.
But if it really was a "punishment", then using late payment as a motivational tool, or even worse, vindictively, is just stupid and counter-productive, even downright aggressive, and makes you wonder just how safe GEOS is in the hands of this man.
GEOS is as good as bankrupt. No new students will sign now - the Japanese are not complete retards, they hear the rumors. No new students = No new cash flow in next few months = NO PAY.
If there are any GEOS teachers out there who are not actively making plans for a new job - then they are complete morons.
J,J,J,Johnnie THE FIST
Get your facts straight before you post.
GEOS has been renewing students for 6 months ahead for years.
And us teachers at the adult school have never been paid late. In our contract is says on the last business day of the month and we have ALWAYS gotten it then. There is no clause about what hour... I think you are from the kids schools so please don't go blogging about us when you don't know shite!
And that is just the start...
I started reading this blog thing because my co-worker, another foreigner told me about this shite.
And after reading some of these things- there are too many people who are just looking for GEOS to collapse- you are sadistic.
We got paid - we just wanna keep our jobs and do what we gotta do. We don't need you self appointed queens of the world telling us what we should or shouldn't do and most of all if you dont know the facts - don't state your opinions as facts.
What is the meaning of libel????? Yah mate- you might wanna be mindful there.
So to the rest of yah all- go off and smell the daisies... it will give you a more delightful feeling then wasting time blogging. And a happy halloween to all you.
The saddest part of all this are these company hacks. Maybe Geos is not at the verge of bankruptcy yet, but it certainly is having serious problems. The environment is bad enough for English schools the way it is. When one starts scaring students and staff with late payments, that has got to hurt.
Geos does not seem to be the total basket case Nova was, but these company hacks are just as pathetic as some of the Nova ones were. Most people want to have jobs, but that is no excuse for sticking your heads in the sand and giving a company that could care less about you so much loyalty.
Don't you have any kind of identity outside of your jobs?? People attacking Geos are not attacking you personally.
That said, you are a foreign worker doing a relativily low-skilled job in a company the government is not going to save (nor is anyone going to protect you). You are on your own so you should face the very real threat that Geos will go down relatively soon.
Even if Geos survives the short term, it certainly is not a long-term bet.
PLAN B!! You always should be thinking of this no matter what job you are doing!
Thank you for your reply.
If I was mistaken, please update the wikipedia page with that portion removed.
This is what I mean.
Also I agree that misrepresenting the issues is a bad thing, I want the company to succeed.
Spaceporter, sorry but there is not such thing as being paid very slightly late. It is like being "slightly pregnant". You either get paid , or paid late - which is what GEOS have been doing to Japanese staff. Some of those people have bills to pay, and budget for payday, and that disgrace for a company GEOS has failed them all. Can anyone produce any evidence to suggest that sham for a company won't fail them all again?
Lets make this very clear : THE SOONER LATE-PAYING GEOS GOES DOWN THE BETTER - PEOPLE CAN THEN MOVE ON.
I completely agree that late is late. But I am just pointing out that the following time it was more late.
Dan,
Get the chip off your shoulder man - I used to work for GEOS too, so I really can sympathise and feel your pain... but you sound bitter, so you must have ahd a worse time than me.
But you are right! late paying is illegal, and it was done twice in a row, which is not good for employees or the company. This month from what I'm reading, it seems everyone (even the managers) got paid on time. Maybe I've misunderstood though.
Anyway, I have better things to post about, as do you, So let's wish the current GEOS staff the best, and hope (for them) it's a sign that things are on the up.
Hey Thorn,
Have you heard the news? After getting all horny and aroused and working yourself up to the brink of climax about it, GEOS paid all its staff on time and still goes on. Bet you must be gutted.
HA HA HA HA HA HA
let the j's have their own small world.
Two things could have happened:
(a) GEOS staff worked very hard, and got many people over the last few weeks to buy and pay for in advance for 6 months of lessons
(b) The directors had no choice, and reluctantly diverted funds previously diverted out of the company, back into the company
Given the “Pillars Of Strength” principal that GEOS was reputedly founded on, I am gathering their sales blitz this last few weeks must have been a raging success, and that GEOS is now once again a rock solid, sound and secure company, and Japanese and gaigin staff can relax, as the GEOS juggernaut moves full steam ahead.
Seriously, just a momentary money problem folks, so minor in fact that it only meant that Japanese staff could not be paid (and bugger them), but it is all better now.
Hmmmm…..
Let’s see.
Seriously, just a momentary money problem folks, so minor in fact that it only meant that Japanese staff could not be paid (and bugger them), but it is all better now.
Whatever was going on, use this message board to keep pressure on GEOS, especially next pay day.
Come on Thorn, admit it, your raging, perverted blood-lust for eikaiwa got the better of you, and you created a great volume of unnecessary panic and anxiety amongst GEOS staff and instructors, salivating over the prospect of their company going bankrupt and them losing their jobs. Now that you've been proved wrong, you look like a total ass. I really don't know how you're going to dig yourself out of this one and restore some credibility to yourself.
Yahagi
Hmm. Let me see Yahagi, yes, my wonderful reputation (which you seem to care about more than me) is now destroyed, because, despite not being able to pay it’s Japanese staff, despite being well and truly up against the ropes (common knowledge), GEOS managed to find the coin to pay it’s instructors, this time.
Ha ha ha. What are you? The Chief Nuff Nuff of the United Eikaiwa Federation, or are you some kind of screwed up Eikaiwa loving junky?
Or are you just yet another Eikaiwa retard? Hmm?
If I were an instructor, I would feel extremely safe and secure, working for that polished GEOS outfit (just like Yahagi obviously does), because, having managed to just pay their staff, they are clearly a wonderful, safe, and secure organization to be working for. They will certainly be around for a long, long, long time to come, and with absolute certainty, everyone is very safe and secure tucked neatly under the GEOS wing.
Yeah, right. Think you might want to consider a career change Yahagi, no offence.
THORN
Yahagi
It's not worth trying to argue with him, it really isn't
Yeah, just leave him to play with himself, and take no notice of him.
Nova Dicky
Yahagi (and all you GEOS supporters)
You sound like company hacks in management being paid to say these things to defend the company... No one here believes you that all is fine at GEOS - yes, you may have been paid this time - but Japanese staff were paid at least 2 times late. If you guys are not seriously bricking it working for such a late-paying company, then I'd suggest you might start re-assessing your priorities for working for such a company. Having been burnt (along with thousands of others) by the NOVA fiasco (when I should have seen the signs myself), the prognosis for GEOS looks very troubling. Have there been many sales of late? How is the morale? Are the lessons only half-full? Are you all feeling more of a squeeze by management than usual?
START GETTING THOSE RESUME'S IN ORDER AND WORKING ON PLAN B GUYS - I'M NOT SAYING THIS TO ANTAGONISE YOU GEOS WORKERS BUT FROM BITTER EXPERIENCE.
Best Wishes
Steve.
Junken Master. What the? Arguing that, depsite late payments to J staff, and it being common knowledge the company is in deep shit (hence late payments 2 months in a row), that all is just dandy, because this month, instructors got paid on time?
Are you some kind of retard?
I hate Eikaiwa, and make no apologies about that fact, in case you had not noticed, by the way.
Also by the way, on restoration of reputations, I would take the reputation of a dung beetle, over that of an Eikaiwa operator, any day.
Got that? Hmmm?
Pfft!
THORN
Hey Thorn dude, chill man. Yahagi and Junken's just havin' a bit o' fun with y'all. Ya gotta admit tho' buddy, it sure was fun seein' y'all pumped up about GEOS fallin', only for the company to still be here. Musta been a huge disappointment for ya not to achieve full climax this time bro'.
No worries, lookin' forward to the end o' this month dude to see y'all pumped up again about the impending fall o' GEOS dude.
Go Thorny!! You bet ya brother!
Peter Party Town
Seems like someone has really got up your nose. Hmmm. Deep Impact. Hmmm. Oh well, that's the price I pay, for being famous.
I love being the centre of your attention.
PS: I hear that the news of GEOS instructors being paid has resulted in a massive change in consumer sentiment, and customers are lining up like we are all back in the middle of the bubble economy. The future is bright. NOT!
However, more seriously, for those feeling just a little bit nervous, please refer to Yahagi River (and aliases) for moral support and heartfelt feelings.
Yahagi River cares deeply for the instructors in an emotional sense, where as, I simply don't. Truly, I really don't. Especially these days.
With all the information out there over the last decade and more, like, you know, with the information super highway and all, only a retard would sign up for a tour of duty in Eikaiwa land to begin with, especially with a company known to be struggling.
THORN
So you go from getting all climactically horny last week that "GEOS is going down on Friday", and having fallen flat on your face with that one, try to hide your stupidity by this week repeatedly asserting that "GEOS is struggling for custom and doesn't have much of a future" - something which even the dumbest eikaiwa drone has known for a long time anyway.
Perhaps you should THINK before you open your mouth in future. Not that you will, having a track record as you do of spewing off and making a complete and utter ass of yourself on the Internet.
Just watch, you'll do it again in your next post.
I think you have found yourself, whoever you are, on holidays in Japan, with nothing to do, hence me being the object of your fascination.
I am happy to be the object of your fascination. Please continue to indulge. Is it because the taste is sweet, or do you simply like to correspond with "ass"? Please, we don’t need to know the real reasons "behind" the latter.
Additionally, I think you should have a medal pinned to your chest, for being the internet entity that cares the most for the instructors.
Instructors, please refer to Yahagi (and aliases) for heartfelt advice.
You won't get any sympathy from me, if that is what you are looking for.
Frankly, and so sorry to repeat myself, even if on queue, I think that people who sign up for Eikaiwa, given the information so freely available these days about them, who expect anything other than the short end of the stick, are fools.
And do tell me, OH YE Internet Lord Saviour of and Bandaid to the Bleeding Hearts of the Eikaiwa Slave Boat, do you think people should have faith in GEOS, and stay put?
I don’t. I think greater eikaiwa history strongly suggests GEOS is heading for the bottom of the Atlantic. You must admit, the situation these past few months really does not paint a pretty picture, does it?
If it does join HMAS Novatanic, I won’t shed a single tear. Quite the opposite in fact.

""I don’t. I think greater eikaiwa history strongly suggests GEOS is heading for the bottom of the Atlantic. You must admit, the situation these past few months really does not paint a pretty picture, does it?""

'With all the information out there over the last decade and more, like, you know, with the information super highway and all, only a retard would sign up for a tour of duty in Eikaiwa land to begin with, especially with a company known to be struggling' Thorn
That's a bit like saying all the people whose homes are in foreclosure now had it coming to them and you won't shed a tear. Really, it is a very similar attitude to that of the people who are ripping them off. It's their justification, in fact. Suckers have it coming. We're educating them by stealing from them.
Nevertheless, getting totally fucked over is what happens to an awful lot of people every year. People who, for whatever reason never get to the level of understanding they need before it is too late - the level of hype to get people back into the markets at this time has never been higher and educated people worldwide are falling for it.
I stand corrected - Pacific it is
THORN
Thorny, don't be too disappointed that you didn't achieve full orgasm last time round. Be careful though, working yourself up to climax at the end of each month will get more and more energy-sapping as time goes by. If and when GEOS finally does fall, you might have completely run out of juice, if you catch my drift.
Maxy:
You might have been paid this month, but your days of making money by smiling like a jerk off and playing English jester are numbered. You'd better make the most of everyday you have left with any cash, because a loser like you is at his pinnacle right now. This is good as it gets for you drone.

Hey Luke dude, chill man!! Ya know it's like, everyone's just havin' a great big party on this board dude, nothing to get aggro about. Chill and enjoy the party dude.
You bet ya!!
Hey Petey:
When GEOS closes you will be puffing peters in Triangle Park to scape up enough yen for the cover at Sam & Daves. Party on!!!

You bet ya Lukey boy!!! When GEOS falls, I'll just carry on partyin' dude, coz that's what life in Japan is bro'. It's one non-stop party brother!!!
You bet ya!!!

Luke, please don’t be so harsh in your criticism of The Chairperson of the Eikaiwa Instructor On-line Care Committee, John the Baptist of Eikaiwa, and my personal number one fan and admirer.
There are feelings involved. Heartfelt, human feelings and emotions.
John the Baptist of Eikaiwa simply has ruffled feathers, because he believes I have been too relentless in my criticism of an industry that once elevated him to Charisma Man Status, which, like crack cocaine, he finds very hard to let go of.
The broader collapse of Charisma Man Status, the ageing of John the Baptist of Eikaiwa, and the collapse of the Eikaiwa Con as you know have all gone hand in hand.
Some subconsciously and falsely believe that preservation and defence of the Eikaiwa Con will result in the restoration and second coming of their own personal Charisma Man Status, let alone that of others.
And then of course, there are some who simply feel love, genuine love and care, and have the deepest empathy for those who walk the corridors of Eikaiwa, regardless of the fact, that only an idiot would do that, for more than the briefest of stints. It is all about caring.
For others, greater comfort with bad life decisions is gained by knowing one is not alone, as more and more drones embark on the same pitiful journey.
And of course, some long term twats simply like feasting off the enthusiasm of incoming drones, and being in a position to help them with expert crucial advice, like where and how to get a good phone deal, which bar has the best value nomi-hodai, and how to get a better deal on rent, because it helps to increase feelings of self-worth, diminished by the job itself.
Yes, we must all really take a closer look at what is really motivating the Baptist of Eikaiwa, embrace it, and, as members of an on-line community, have a big group hug.
Come on everybody. It is group hug time, and please, Baptist of Eikaiwa, bless our foreheads, good and bad, with your holy Charisma Man waters.

Ha ha ... I agree Thorn, Peter Party Guy sounds suspiciously like the 4th picture of Charisma Man from the following series : http://www.karatethejapaneseway.com/photos/charisma_man_03.jpg
It seems there are still a few Charisma Men hanging on in Japan for dear life...

Hey dudes, I didn't realize a few happy, party messages on Lets Japan could spin yo's all out dudes. What is it wit' yo' eikaiwa drones in J-pan anyways? Don't y'all have no things to do in yo' freetime dudes? You guys sound like y'all spent too long in eikaiwa dudes, and got yo' heads zapped in that Nova booth man.
As for me, I'll just carry on chiilin' and have a super, happy, partyin' time!

Professional: Your post on the so called "spirit of GEOS" is so far removed from the reality of working at GEOS that I can only assume that you are trying to be satirical? Just to point out some of the most obvious flaws...
This is a complete joke! Obviously you have never seen, or weren't able to understand, the typical communication between head office and the staff of an individual school (especially the manager) I have, on more than one occasion, seen a manager (sometimes in their first job, and who has received no training) reduced to tears by abusive phonecalls from head office. Abusive is exactly the correct adjective, as often these calls are ridiculously personal, and /or threatening- You must make X CSSM today or we can't afford to pay the bills (wages) sound familiar? Well, you certainly came good on that threat this time, didn't you?
Employees of all levels who are deemed to have underperformed (ie not sold enough in whatever campaign is currently occupying head offices' braincell) are called upon to attend V-chats- these are nothing more than crude punishments. The kind of language that I have heard from your fellow "managers" to teachers on these V-chats includes gems like "you're lying" "no that didn't happen, you're wrong" "be quiet" etc. Great examples of compassionate listening!
I notice also that on this list of reasons not to discriminate that appearance isn't mentioned- Kaicho telling a Japanese female manager that the reason she didn't get sign ups was because she was "fat and ugly" was obviously perfectly acceptable wasn't it?
What kind of respect do I witness in here? Little wonder most of you never manage to step outside of the instructors shoes, in your GEOS journey
- the respect that you see here is far greater than ever was shown by head office to any individual employee.
Someone hasn't been listening to Kaichos' speeches have they? Kaicho makes it very clear that all the failings of the company are down to managers, this is when they are not the fault of the teachers. The idea that head office actually has responsiblity for the consequences of its' decisions has never really hit home, has it? There is nothing more destructive to team spirit than this.
As mentioned above GEOS is using textbooks from the 1990s. There is little/ no training on offer. "Managers" because of their role of bully-in-chief, and because it might encourage people to say what they actually think give no opportunity for indivduals to speak. Any comment that suggests that things could be better also implies that things are not currently perfect, and is therefore taboo. Staff at individual schools have no say in the running of the school- if you want to buy some washing up liquid you got to get it OKed. The use of construction paper has been forbidden (too expensive) There is no mechanism to pass suggestions on, and anyway "innovative technologies and creative business solutions" only distract attention from the main point of today, ie put as much money on Kaichos' pocket as you possibly can.
-what about the Japanese staff?
If you had bothered to read the uketsuke pamphlet and counted the lies in that you might have a different opinion. My particular favourite is the part detailing all the training that teachers receive- absolute nonsense! I was lied to many, many times in my "GEOS journey" with so called "managers" going to huge lengths to try to treat staff out of any kind of benefit, extra payments, holidays etc. However, the biggest lie of all has been mentioned above- the deliberate misreporting of hours worked. There are no teachers working only 29.5 hours, and if they were they'd already have had their jobs cut. What this misreporting actually amounts to is tax evasion, so, not only is the company at every level dishonest, it is also criminal.
You've obviously never been in a school where the CD player is busted- obviously they can't afford a new one. The teacher acting out a 4 person dialogue by themselves is a fine example of "developing and providing technologically advanced solutions and services"
Fact – GEOS is one of the major language players, globally
Fact- You are living up your own hole if you believe one comma of what you wrote is true. Whilst I truly hope that the people working in good faith at school level are not hurt by the staggering incompetence, bullying and dishonesty of "managers" like you I can only hope that GEOS and any similar company goes where it deserves- right down the toilet.
Well I'll be damned - it's you isn't it Dicky? Go on, admit it, I can sniff ya Dicky, I can sniff ya! So this is where you've been hanging out and conducting your cyber-stalking operations from. I suppose you need some company since the demise and fall of Nova, and NTU. Hope things aren't getting too lonely in your mother's basement. How is your mother these days, is she still running the motel?
Only kidding Dicky, you and me are best friends right? You never know, if you ask me nicely, I might be able to get you a freebie in the Stratosphere Hotel next time you're in Las Vegas. You went down a real storm with the waiting staff that time you rocked up in your duck's outfit. You were the star of the show!
Me too, I can sniff him, loud and clear. Come on Dicky, out with it, sitting there behind your computer, gnashing your teeth, slavering at the mouth. I can sniff ya Dicky, I can sniff ya!!!
Dave 26, I liked your post. It really was spot on.
GEOS Down the toilet? Frankly, I would be tickled pink, if the entire Eikaiwa Industry went down the toilet.
When you really think about it, is an extremely degrading way to make a living, being a play thing, for the Japanese.
Let’s face it, in the most part, that is what it is all about.
I found your hatred of those gaigin middle “managers” (“managers”, ha ha ha) interesting.
In eikaiwa, they seem to have a habit of selecting the biggest retards in the bunch, and then giving them the paper reigns, so that an image of a corporate ladder existing can be seen by silly newbies (the fresh meat marching in through the doors), even though, it reality, it does not exist, accept in the most token of senses.
Eikaiwa. Yes, down the toilet with the lot of them !
THORN
Not to change the subject, but have other people been scanning the "Gaijinpot.com" website? Looks as though some places are hiring on a revolving basis. What is happening to the people who leave? Can we get some input from people working in those situations? Really, I'd like to hear from a wider group of folks out there.
Ok, I'll add my perspective. And this is my first comment in this thread, by the way. It's obvious that at least one person here is using aliases. (Why bother?)
Pretty much everything Dave26 said is spot on. I have very high professional and teaching standards, and I worked in one of the supposedly less terrible GEOS branches (Sasebo, Nagasaki), and my experience matched his description almost 100%. The only exception I'll make is that I did receive some decent training from a Scottish guy in Fukuoka City who came down when I was at the end of my rope, but that was clearly more to his credit than to the company's.
I kept in touch with some of my fellow trainees from the Vancouver orientation. One ended up in Tokyo, the other somewhere in the Tohoku region, I don't remember. Both confirmed similar experiences, as did a number of other Kyushu teachers I saw at trainings in Fukuoka City. I can't say definitively, but this seems pretty universal.
I'd say my most enduring memory of GEOS is the omnipresent dishonesty. It permeates virtually every layer of the company; there's no escaping it. They lie to their customers, they lie to you, they steal from you, and they insist that you lie to your students in order to sell sell sell (and I got constant flak for drawing the line there). I managed through the generosity of friends to find my way out of the company after seven months, thank god. Now I work for Interac.
Now Interac has its own set of problems, and I wouldn't trust any of its Japanese managers (the ones with the real power) any further than I could throw them, but the dishonesty is not quite as in your face as it was at GEOS. My biggest complaint with Interac is that the communication channels are garbage, leading (naturally) to a very incompetently run company. But their incompetence also means they let you get on with your job without putting up with verbal abuse by management every other day (that was GEOS).
The verdict? I wouldn't recommend Interac to anyone, unless you are already in Japan and really need work. I wouldn't touch GEOS with a 10-foot stick, under any circumstances. Remember NOVA's reputation as the armpit of the eikaiwa industry for providing the poorest working conditions and most egregious examples of dishonest and unprofessional conduct? Well, when NOVA went under GEOS took over that position.
-Moon
This what all eikaiwa are like. The whole thing is based on lies, it's about giving the impression that it's professional and proper, and giving it a nice, sleek, glossy packaging, in order to hide the fact that there's absolutely no substance to it.
And they'll do whatever they have to - and I mean whatever - to make money. They're quite prepared to screw staff and customers over to achieve that.
...Are not the same.
Your perspectives and experiences are your own, and by all means feel free to share them. But you haven't worked at every eikaiwa in Japan, so you aren't qualified to make the statement you just did.
I spent two years working part time at one with a good deal of integrity in Fukuoka City. And there are many others all over Japan, usually smaller outfits that have two or three branches at most.
Saying that this kind of behavior is inevitable for an eikaiwa is not acceptable for another reason: It excuses GEOS and others on the basis of the fact that they cannot be any other way.
GEOS is the way it is because that is how Mr. Kusunoki has chosen to run it. Or to allow it to be run, which is the same thing in my book. Its dishonesty is no more inevitable than the dishonesty of any other for-profit company.
-Moon
For me, eikaiwa is a fundamentally a substance-less, pointless business. As soon as it does get some substance - for instance, qualified teachers, a proper syllabus, and development of language skills - in my book, it goes from being an eikaiwa, a conversation school, to a language school. That's why, for me, eikaiwa can never be any other way.
I find it very hard to believe that an eikaiwa had "integrity". I'm sure that, if I had a look at the way they run their business, I could find flaws in it. But I have to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one.
As for my "all eikaiwa..." comment, it's hyperbole. Exaggeration to highlight the fact that eikaiwa, from what I've seen, heard and experienced, broadly follow the "business model" I outlined previously. The same can be said about your comment that "there are many other (eikaiwa with a good deal of integrity) all over Japan, usually smaller outfits that have two or three branches at most". Have you worked at "many other eikaiwa", let's say, around 10 different ones, "all over Japan", that is, Kyushu, Shikoku, the regions of Honshu, and Hokkaido?
Sorry, it's not worth it to me to debate the relative merits of eikaiwa with you, because unlike most posters on this page I have no agenda. I am no more interested in condemning the evil eikaiwa industry than I am in extolling its wonderful virtues.
I think maybe you do have an agenda: To convince others that eikaiwa in Japan is bad, and necessarily so.
If I am wrong, then I ask you to forgive me, and ignore the rest of this message.
If I am right, then I'd like to gently remind you that specific facts and examples (such as your own personal experiences) are much more convincing than blanket generalizations and hyperbole. This is to be expected, not least because it respects the reader enough to allow them to draw their own conclusions, based on the facts you provide.
Most of the posts on this page don't bother to do that. I tried to be different, and I recommend you do the same.
I'm open to debate on it if you want. I can not see any real worth or value in eikaiwa. It's cheap entertainment, along with karaoke or pachinko. I can't conceive of eikaiwa as being anything other than that.
As I said, you can make it into something of value by bringing proper language training methods into it, but then, to my mind, it would stop being eikaiwa and become language learning. They're two different things. The whole idea of eikaiwa is to "talk", nothing more. There's no learning involved in it, no practice or development of language.
As for eikaiwa business practices, I can see that, maybe, there are more than a few small "mom and pop" eikaiwas out there that treat their instructors and customers properly. They have to as they usually only have a few people working for them and a small core of students. I'd agree with you that those places probably, on average, have more integrity.
Generally though, eikaiwa is pretty much worthless all round from what I've seen, and the management practices generally range from poor to downright despicable. I trust you'll offer some specific facts and concrete examples from your own experience to challenge this. I'm interested to hear.
I only use an alias because I can't find out how to register with a username.
Hmmm……
There are only 4 “major” Eikaiwa outfits (well, 3 now, since the demise of Nova Corporation), and I worked for two of them, and they were both low grade glorified karaoke boxes, spewing forth English language from the lips of mostly untrained gits who would not have a clue, supervised by retards, that being the medium which replaced whiskey fuelled singing.
Friends that worked at others, continually reported the same problems that we all despised at the two I had experience working for.
Frankly, any retard walking the street, in a “I have taught too many Pizza Lessons today” stupor, should know that Eikaiwa is pretty much Eikaiwa – ie: Eikaiwa is shithouse and worthless, beyond surface curiosity and novelty for the shortest period of time.
You sound like a real scientist Moon.
Basically, you are saying, that unless someone has worked in every single Eikaiwa in Japan, that a general concept of Eikaiwa is thus inaccurate and/or false.
I beg to differ.
In a box full of rotten apples, there may well be one seemingly untarnished apple, but it is still quite ok, to say, “That is a box of rotten apples”.
Then of course, if you do, some eccentric anomaly of a person may jump in and say:
“Excuse me, there may well be an apple in that box that is unblemished, and thus, you sir, have no right to say that is a rotten box of apples. Please desist. Please say instead, the box of apples is largely populated by rotten apples, but if you are prepared to eat them all, you may be lucky, and strike one in there, amongst all the filth and detritus, that is not in a noticeably advanced state of decomposition. Until then, then please, it remains, a box of apples, and nothing else, and calling it anything else, is misleading”
Eikaiwa actually is rotten, to the very core.
