Porn Special at the Japan Times
I'm no prude, but I wonder what the Japan Times is thinking when they run two articles in the Sunday paper about porn actress awards and hostess clubs with porn stars. How are these "specials" or even relevant to a newspaper? Or is it that they miss the readership they used to get with the Tokyo Confidential column they ended not long ago?
Tokyo Confidential wasn't nearly as salacious as the Mainichi's WaiWai column, but I wonder why any newspaper that wants to be taken seriously and portends to be "the world's window on Japan" would legitimize porn by running "specials" that essentially advertise an awards show.
Like WaiWai, the problem with running this kind of content is that it reflects poorly on the Japan Times. Do they really not care about what they print or are they more interested in attracting eyeballs to their website?

I thought the wai wai problem was more to do with breaches of copywrite and poor journalism than actual content.
Haven't read the JT articles yet but perhaps they reflect a general acceptance in Japan of porn's existence in society? You see pornstars/former pornstars appear on conventional TV shows all the time here, and nobody seems to think much of it.
I have given up purchasing Japan Times after seeing that special story on the porn industry.
Japan Times quality has been sliding in the last few years. Apparently they are more full of themselves than being interested in providing news of interest to their readers.
Was there an April Fool's story this year?? I missed it. I have no interest in paying top yen for a rag that insults its readers by wasting page space on humorless tripe!
It might not be a biggie compared to the sleaze and copyright violations of WaiWai, but my point is about the purpose of a newspaper. It's supposed to inform and educate its readers, but a "special" on porn does neither, even if porn is accepted or tolerated by the public. There are ways to write intelligently about porn other than telling readers about an awards show nobody cares about.
Of the English language papers in Japan, the Japan Times is probably the best. The fact that its archives are available online make it very useful compared to the English versions of the Yomiuri, Asahi, and Mainichi. For all of the JT's faults, it would be a shame to have the paper lower itself to the ranks of Japan Today for the sake of attracting hits on its website.

It would seem that Special Correspondent Mr Bull is going to be a regular contributor to The Japan Times. There were two more sex industry pieces in this weekend's paper.
