Here we go again. Despite several information sessions following the collapse of Nova and the handing over of operations to g.communication, confusion is still the order of the day.
Hence, :
First the firing of the Hokkaido instructor, and now this:
At Head Office, those trying to help ex-Nova employees are starting to realize that they are powerless in this new company to do anything but get the place up and running again. Once they do, there are serious concerns that many of them will be cast aside and end up looking for new work as well.
As for G-Coms promise to re-employ all Nova employees expect the worst! Come January the majority of those still not working will not be offered positions anywhere near their current location. If you are not prepared to move wherever you are assigned then its over.
G-Com has NO intention of re-employing all ex-Nova instructors and those still waiting may well find themselves without the offer of re-employment. If any reason can be found (or created) to cut them from the list, expect it.

Information regarding Re-employment with G.education
Thank you for requesting re-employment with G.education. Since taking over operations at Nova we have put all our efforts into proceeding with the reopening of branches. As a result, we expect to have approximately 130 branches offering Nova lessons during December 2007.
At the same time, the Trustees in Bankruptcy are making progress with dissolving Nova Corporation. At present they have started proceeding sequentially with terminating leases of properties which will not be taken over by G.education and the problem of unpaid wages. With the cooperation of property owners, we have managed to rapidly reopen many branches but now intend to more closely align branch reopenings with the current business situation. The process of opening the Ekimae Ryugaku branches and restarting lessons requires a lot of time, personnel and expense. To enable us to offer lessons even more quickly to students who still have unused lesson points, we will shift the focus of development from the branches to expanding Ochanoma Ryugaku lessons with a view to even opening new Multimedia Center facilities overseas.
In the current business situation, it is only possible for G.education to employ a limited number of instructors in January and while we appreciate your request for re-employment from January 10, 2008, it is with great regret that we inform you that we are not able to offer you a position at G.education at this time.
While the current business situation makes this decision unavoidable, we hope to be able to contact you and ask you for your assistance if possible once business operations allow.
In our endeavor to continue Novafs business, we are constantly forced to make difficult decisions and, while our aim is to be able to have as many students as possible return to the branches and as many instructors as possible continue employment, it is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you of this decision and ask for your understanding.
We wish you all the best with your future endeavors.

So g.communication has opened approximately 130 branches but does not plan on offering positions to those who requested re-employment from January 10. This also caught my eye:
...we will shift the focus of development from the branches to expanding Ochanoma Ryugaku lessons with a view to even opening new Multimedia Center facilities overseas.
Translation: Yes, we promised you work back in November, but we don't have enough students, so we're moving offshore to some place really cheap.
What a stab in the back for those who wanted to work. Things have truly gone off the rails. It wasn't that long ago when the standard response to someone thinking of working in Japan was to say, "Get in with Nova, get the visa, and look for something better." That conveyor belt of workers no longer exists. The timing of this announcement makes the General Union's food-for-lessons program look good--at least they had hope.
What a shitty Christmas.

I For One,
Am enjoying the brain aneurysms that are forming (that I am helping to cause?) in this thread!
But no, really, semi-colon use, come on...nobody knows those rules, cuz they are stupid. How long did you spend looking up that rule? Cuz surely you don't have THAT rule on the tip of your brain, but not the correct spelling of "loser".
However, for your further edification,
"Looser" is a TOTALLY different word from "Loser".
It's just plain silly to make that mistake...and three times to boot.
Admit it, we all make mistakes, it's ok...
Already admitted my mistake, thank you very much
Interesting, you admit you didn't even know the rule! How's that for somebody who goes out of his way to correct my spelling? I at least KNOW the difference between 'loser' and 'looser,' even though I misspelled the former. But in your case the ignorance is OK because the 'rule is stupid.' Do you know the difference between a 'justification' and a 'rationalization'? You might want to look those words up. Anyway, I wouldn't have bothered to mention it normally, but seeing as how your only response to my original post was to point out a silly spelling error...
The point I was making about the semi-colon really wasn't about grammar; it was about you making a fool out of yourself criticizing other people when you are making the exact same types of mistakes. It just makes you come across as a pompous ass.
I knew it was a mistake the moment I saw it, and I did know the rule. I did double check it since I have the reference right here on my desk (in addition to teaching I'm also a professional translator and editor, and before coming to Japan I worked as an editor for a literary agency in the US; despite my infamous typing error, I dare say my knowledge of grammar, typographic rules, and, yes, even SPELLING is probably a good deal better than yours, by any objective standard).
So, I take it that you believe that people who mistype 'there' for 'their' don't actually know the difference? Do you think that people who type 'recieve' don't know the rule ''I' before 'E' except after 'C'?' I suppose you think people who type 'cant' don't actually know what an apostrophe is?
Get real! Yes, I know the difference between 'loser' and 'looser,' but typing and spelling mistakes are generally errors of HABIT, not misunderstanding. People tend to misspell and mistype the same words over and over again, but when the error is pointed out they immediately recognize it. You'll notice that when MY error was pointed out, I immediately acknowledged it; I knew it was a mistake and I didn't tell people they were wrong in pointing out the error, simply that they were being a bit anal, as this is a blog. I'm sure somewhere in your personal lexicon there are a few words that you habitually misspell. That doesn't necessarily mean that you don't know the meanings, or even the correct spelling when concentrating, of those words. For example, in your sentence above you AGAIN fail to put the final period INSIDE the quotation marks, even though I have pointed this error out to you at least three times now, and I'm certain you learned this rule back in school. While it's tempting to call you stupid, the truth is simply force of habit. You know the rule but when you're typing you don't think about it, and because you've made the mistake in the past it's quite natural to go on making the same mistake. I'm sure others have noticed it, too, but usually people don't get uptight about spelling and grammar mistakes on a friggin' blog!
As stated above, I already knew that...
But thanks for pointing it out anyway...
Again, as stated above, I've already admitted it, explicitly in my first response to you AFTER you pointed out the mistake, and implicitly numerous times since.
My point in continuing this is NOT to defend my mistake as actually correct. I admit, again, I made a spelling mistake! But you (and several others) are just coming on like hypocritical anal-retentive blowhards by even bothering to mention it. You are ALL making plenty of mistakes of typing, spelling and grammar, yourselves! And yet you are convinced that you are more competent at English! That's just asinine. You are stating things like what a joke it is that 'English teachers' don't know how to spell, and you go on making similar mistakes! I'm not really saying that you, too, are not qualified to teach English. Just stop acting like you are morally and intellectually superior, because you aren't. Well, maybe you are--how would I know? But it sure doesn't show in the quality of your friggin' typing on a blog!
Since the topic of this
Since the topic of this thread has totally shifted, can I weigh in with my two cents? I can't stand it when people say 'pronounciation' instead of 'pronunciation.' Sets my teeth on edge. Anyone who says 'pronounciation' is a knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing troglodyte, with a rhesus monkey's grasp of the English language. Now let's all wait a few minutes while I proofread my post...
OK, done.
Can't be much happening at
Can't be much happening at G-Com at present. Everyone seems to be correcting each other. Okay, here goes...I can't stand it when people say,
"You did good."
Now I will run away before the shit hits the fan.
Seriously....
Shut up!!! It's time to get back on subject and keep your eye on the ball. What G-Com is doing is very serious, and you are all fighting about some stupid spelling and grammar mistakes. Put your egos aside for once and get back on track.
I have heard rumors that G-com is planning to to lay off a lot of the multimedia instructors, reinterview them, and send them out to other locations. Is there any truth to this?
I agree with the above
I agree with the above poster. Let's get back on topic. If you work for Gcomm this is very serious and if you don't work for Gcomm it's still serious. 600 laid off instructors now and a few hundred more in the near future will flood the marketplace and thus drive down wages. It might take 6 months or even a year but it will happen. It's basic economics. Even if you have a job now, wait until your next contract and see what happens. Now is the time to band together and fight this anyway we can. Fighting each other on the internet doesn't do any good now does it?
Give the Loosers credit...
they were able to do the Math Question below in order to post...that ought to be worth some praise.
I agree with Las Vegas Man. Let's all just get along...Happy New Year!

I like visiting this website. It makes me feel so much better about myself.
I'm amazed at the number of people who write something like "...teaching in Japan is nothing to be proud of..." and so on, in regards to their own situation. I would like to gleefully and patronizingly point out that you are mistaken. Firstly, you probably do not "teach" - what you do is speak English for money at worst, and facilitate communication in English at best. This is not something to be proud of, because this just means you are a language whore. That's fine, but please do not confuse "teaching" with "language whoring." They are two very different things. Secondly, I would like to mention is that true "teaching" is indeed something to be proud of. There is nothing more noble than the sharing of knowledge, or the passing of knowledge from one person to the next. I don't really need to expound on this; it should be apparent to any normal, average human being. (About some of you I have my doubts, but who I am to judge?)
I was also surprised by people who seem to think spelling (and to a lesser extent, punctuation and grammar) is more or less unimportant. How foolish. How utterly, utterly foolish. If you say this, you are saying that you do not care about detail, you do not care about logic, you do not care about the image you project to the world, you want to be taken seriously but you do not believe that you should earn the respect of others that will enable them to take you seriously. You are saying you can't be bothered to follow simple rules to enable smooth communication, and that others should make extra effort in order to understand you. Most importantly, however, what you are saying is that you do not care about the English language, which is extremely disturbing, as you are presumably here to impart what you.. know... of it. (Perhaps it could simply be a sign of the poor quality of the university graduates that come to Japan, or perhaps a sign of the poor quality of the universities these people have been educated at.) I can guarantee you that these kinds of claim would never happen among professional teachers of English, English Literature, EFL, or ESL in any country, on the internet or off of it. (Sorry, but just because you are writing on the net, you aren't excused from trying to write well. Why would you think otherwise?) I guess this just goes to show that the vast majority of you are, in fact, not professionals, or even reasonable facsimiles thereof.
Oh well, back to surfing for porn.
I'm not rodney king
Can't we all just get along? Seriously.
Take a step back and listen to yourselves. Iraq has a war going on, so does darfur. Sout africa and the region near by it has an enormous aids problem. Pakistan just lost an admirable leader who may have been prime minister were it not for her assassination. 950 whales will be killed this year by japanese whalers in the name of 'research'. And so the list goes on, and yet you quibble over a typo. Pathetic, really pathetic.
i want to go!
Sout africa? i cant find it on the map
The truth is...
It's all over!
I know... whatever.
This has become so pathetic. Admit it, no one except for the executives that ran Nova really knew what was going on. They were able to rob about a half million people and treat Japanese staff and foreigners both as commodities. Plus, they got away with it! Greed killed Nova and now G-Comm. has come in to cherry pick whatever they want. Staff is needed more than teachers by far. That's why they don't want to hire anymore teachers. I bet the ratio of teachers to staff is about 100:1 right now.
You know what really is stupid? So many people are self-righteous and think they have the right to tell people to go home. What does that even mean? Why are people preaching 15th century nationalism in the 21st century? I'll tell you why, because there are those who have a twisted sense of entitlement and honestly believe they are better off because they didn't work at Nova or were able to leave before the collapse. Get over it. Why do you care who is here in Japan. You're not Japanese! For those who are Japanese, you have been very considerate in spite of all of this nonsense.
Banding Together
Now the topic of this thread is moving in the right direction, let's keep it here and get serious about protecting ourselves. In order to protect ourselves, everyone involved needs to remember why we joined Nova in the first place. Whatever your aim, Nova was a company where you felt you could accomplish it. What drew us here was the atmosphere that, more than any other English coversation school in Japan, enabled people to fulfill their desires. So, when there is talk about "banding together," it's important for people to acknowledge why this is important for so many of us. If you are like most instructors, you came here to earn money, gain life experience and learn some Japanese, at a minimum. Isn't it worth fighting to prevent the institution that made all of that possible for us from falling victim to empty lies and unfettered corruption again in its latest form? Of course it is! This is the moment you have to decide how badly you really want to pursue your life goals -- whatever they may be --, how badly you want to protect that which will make it possible to do so. Act now!

Blog
I didn't read the whole blog but I'm sure this isn't the first time this spelling polemic pops up. I guess that's just because there is no news about G com/Nova and that as most people are in vacation they have time to waste :)
Segregation or education
Correct grammar and correct spelling can also be seen as a form of segregation between people well educated and others. The exemple is even more striking with japanese language where you can't get access to the society without having learned 5000 kanji and a complexe politeness formulation which means going through a long, repetitive and expensive education process.
But it's also maybe what's keep japanese society from the stupid brutalty we can observe in other societies, forcing people to "learn" and by doing so, to conform themselves to this society.
Let's hope people who have created those rules won't abuse of their power.
Happy New Year's
I hope you Nova/ex-Nova folks have a Happy New Year's and either get on with it, or go home.
Happy Holidays and Fuck-off! :)

You fucked up. If you were cool about it, you'd get more respect, and it would all be forgotten by now. OBVIOUSLY nobody is perfect when it comes to anything.

A Post So Nice
It Got Posted Twice!
see?..everybody poops!
now I'm done about this.
How utterly, utterly foolish...
Well, little man, let’s see how good your knowledge of written English is, shall we?
‘People’ is a collective noun indicating plurality; ‘something’ is singular. A ‘person’ writes ‘something’; ‘people’ write ‘things.’
The ellipsis should not be used before or after a complete sentence within quotation marks. Ellipses are used to mark omissions or the trailing-off of a thought (for satirical effect), neither of which apply to the above example.
‘You,’ in this sentence, is an ambiguous reference. The unsupported transition from ‘people’ mentioned initially to the direct reference ‘you’ is common enough to be called acceptable, but technically it is a mistake. The main problem here is that this ‘you’ must be assumed to be the 2nd person plural form, since it derives from ‘people.’ Yet soon after you write, ‘this just means you are a language whore.’ ‘You,’ in this case, is clearly 2nd person singular. So you have transitioned from 3rd person plural (people) to 2nd person plural (you) to 2nd person singular (you) all without realizing it.
There are two problems here. The first is typographical. In professional print the ‘dash’ you are using would be an em dash. Since this character can not easily be placed in typewritten documents (such as blog entries) TWO hypens can be used to replace the em dash. You have used only one. Furthermore, there should be no space between the em dash and the surrounding words or punctuation. You have wrongly spaced both before and after the hyphen (which should be a double hyphen). This brings us to the second mistake. An em dash is used for various purposes, but it most definitely should NOT be used to separate two complete sentences, as you have done. A semicolon (placed outside the quotation mark after ‘teach’ would have been a better choice.
Again, there are two problems here. First, ‘I would like to mention is that...’ is an obvious grammatical error. Either say ‘what I would like to mention is...’ or omit the ‘is.’ Second, you finish the sentence with a preposition, which is common enough to be considered acceptable, but is usually shunned by those professing the importance of ‘proper grammar.’ Also, ‘firstly’ and ‘secondly’ are adverbial, meant to show degree of importance. You seem only to be listing, so ‘first’ and ‘second’ would be more appropriate.
Again, you end the sentence with a preposition. Furthermore, in my opinion, you show poor style by placing within parentheses a complete sentence which has been off-set from the preceding sentence by a period when the enclosed sentence does not finish a paragraph. I can tell you from professional experience that many publishers (in the American style, at least) would frown upon this construction. Better to omit the preceding period, un-capitalize the first word within the parentheses, and move the closing period outside the closing parenthesis.
Well, I’ll let you find the mistake here. It’s elementary, to say the least.
So much for taking care to write well, eh? Apparently the only thing you were careful about was the spelling, and I suppose you just used a spell check for that. Nothing wrong with being careful about spelling (so I’ve been told at length recently). But I have to wonder how you justify calling yourself a ‘professional teacher’ rather than a ‘language whore’ when your command of written English is so poor...
Now, on to your logic...
Some ‘whores’ walk dark streets at night and exchange sex for money; some whores stay inside comfortable clubs or bars and exchange sex for money; some whores drive Bentleys, fly in Learjets, and travel the world with rich and powerful men (and exchange sex for money). Now, what is it that all these people have in common that defines them as ‘whores’ (to use your term)? They do ‘what they do’ for money.
Some English teachers (I mean, whores) work in cafes or students’ homes, some work in eikaiwa schools, some work in universities. All of them (you included) do basically the same thing (assist students with the acquisition of English language skills) for the same reason (MONEY). If I’m a language whore, then so are you, pal. Unless, of course, you teach for free. In that case you’re just a nut-case.
And you assume that eikaiwa teachers don’t share and pass on knowledge because...? I know some TENURED professors who really don’t give a flying-fuck about their students, and I know highly trained and dedicated eikaiwa teachers. Let’s try to keep the overgeneralizations to a minimum, shall we?
I don’t think anyone said they are not ‘important.’ First, there has been a discussion about the relative importance of these things on an internet BLOG. That’s quite a different thing than writing for The New York Times! If you can’t see the difference, you are really shallow. Next, there was some discussion of how common such mistakes are. Answer: extremely, including within your own posting! The basic issue is should all discussion of issues come to a grinding halt in a free-flowing discussion-like forum like a blog just because someone misspelled a word? My opinion is no, it shouldn’t matter that much in this context.
On most forum boards you attack someone by calling them a Nazi. On ESL boards you criticize their punctuation. Pathetic...
Yeah, get some new ideas for your ‘language whoring.’
I knew it
You fucking Retards!!!!
I told you!!! It was always so obvious that you were going to get fucked over by the NOVA!!! Waiting from September 15th to Christmas?!?!?! Your stupidity is beyond belief. Who would of thought that there was this many college educated imbeciles.
I know Japan is cool, but it’s not that cool. Give up, go home. Move on with your life.
Who we work with
By the way, did you know that the G Com staffs who work at the multimedia center seem to work without taking lunch break nor week-ends...
G-Com/NOVA
NOVA's over. the ship has sunk, some of the bootlickers stay on in their chase for a corporate career. Most everyone else is cannon fodder. Don't keep trusting these people, you can only count on their broken promises. They're only about protecting their own interests and their profits. Corporations seek only to improve share performance. Don't be fooled. look out only for your own interests. Break away from their fear-inducing influence. Go home, get another job, get some sort of qualification, beg on the streets, but by all means stay away from them. They'll come up with ANY excuse to get rid of you or turn you away. Don't trust your T.I.s, they manufacture "truths" and will stab you in the back. Don't trust staff, specially foreign staff. They'll serve you up in a platter to get brownie points with J-staff. They won't hesitate to make decisions that'll stunt your growth. General requests fall on deaf ears. They're quick to forget your contributions, but they will never forget anything "wrong" you've done. Prove your self worth, be free from these people. They'll find ways to trap you. Be free from corporate tyranny.
I warned you!
I posted a few times when Nova was going downing warning the Nova loyalists it would not be pretty. However, trying to warn them was like trying to tell the bushbots before the Iraq War started....
What did you expect people? Basic economics. Companies are out there to make money. Nova's business model had failed. It needed a massive infusion of new money and new ideas to survive. When a much smaller company takes over a much larger one, warning bells should sound.
Next time, please grow a brain. If the company you are working at is going down, your first priority should be saving your skin-especially when you are a foreigner without voting rights or any kind of political clout!!!! Nova hired you to make money from you and the students paid to learn English off of you. You were just a cog in the machine.
Fine Upstanding Young Men and Women
Hehehe. Continue to grasp at straws, little boy, go on. What other mistakes have I made?
Thank you so much for replying in an oh-so-predictable way, and amusing me to no end.

Please note the indicated word. It is a qualifier intended to show that I believe some of you do, in fact, teach. However, judging by the attitude of most people on here, and the way in which they express themselves, I do not believe that most of the people here do teach. In general, do whores teach people how to have sex? Think about this and read what I said again.
Sure, there is strength in
Sure, there is strength in the idea of using language to form barriers among society, people, etc. I don't know if having to learn a new language when you come to a new country is an arbitrary barrier, though; it's more of just what you have to do (or should to) in order to fully adapt.
I just feel that whenever someone says that the basic rules of language don't matter, what they are truly saying is that they are intellectually lazy and more or less disrespectful of the language they are thinking about (or using) when they say that. They probably are also more or less disrespectful of the culture that uses that particular language. That's not good.
Oh, you mean 'language whores!' Now I see...
Oh, I see now. You were actually referring to eikawa teachers who have sex with their students while instructing them in language; thus, 'language whores!' Silly me, I thought you were drawing an analogy...
My point was that 'whores' have sex for money. English teachers teach for money. The common factor is doing a 'job' for money. Thus, if we equate teaching, on any level, with whoring, then any teacher who accepts remuneration for their services would be a 'whore.' But now that I see you were actually being literal, I guess we can just drop it, if you like.
On the point of teaching/not teaching, maybe you could clarify what you mean by 'teach.' Personally, I've never met anyone who was paid just to 'speak English.' Some teachers do their jobs badly, granted. But from my experience that has nothing to do with where they work. Teachers who stick around long enough eventually get good at their jobs. Some of those good teachers have higher qualifications and some don't.
Don't mention it
It was my pleasure. And if you ever need someone to proofread your resume, I'd be glad to help.

What action?
Huh?? are you talking about Nova??
Legal action?? Against who and what for??
A company went bankrupt..people lost their jobs..students lost their money..and now everyones moving on..so should you.
ACTION/Tired of taking it and not giving any back?
The action, if any, will be against G.com, the same company that appears to have re-hired most of the managerial staff that lead Nova to ruin, and which appears to be going down the same Nova road.
Why would you take action
Why would you take action against them? Gcomm promised the same conditions for instructors as before. That means, the same management, the same non-paid breaks, the same illegal clauses in contracts, etc. Instructors chose out of their own free will to return to Nova/Gcomm. They chose to work without new contracts. They chose (against loads of advice from people) to work for or at least apply to work for Gcomm. Maybe Gcomm has done a lot of immoral and unethical things the last couple months but they haven't done anything illegal now have they? We all got screwed over at least once by Nova/Gcomm. Now most of us have moved on. I suggest you do the same thing.
Action/Gcom
We will see what we will see. It will go to the lawyers to decide. Are you a lawyer? Even if so, not about to debate legal issues with you in this forum. For those interested in whether G.com is liable to them or not, suggest you get in touch with The Group, at:

You do not need to be a lawyer to know that this type of lawsuit is very difficult to win in Japan. Furthermore, while it appears G spot is guilty of lying and stupidity, that is not much to go on. Finally, they are not exactly some rich corporate cow to milk. Trying to sue them would be a waste of time and resources.
Face it people. You company went bankrupt. It happens all the time and nobody in Japan really cares that much about foreign workers anyway.

Myself and union chair, Yamahara, will be participating in the negotiations and we would also like one rep from each of the following groups.
1. A Group employees.
2. B Group employees.
3. Members that were actually working at NOVA at the time of the bankruptcy and were refused employment by GEducation.
If you would like to participate, please email .
8 January Emergency Open Meeting
The meeting is planned from 10:00AM at L-Osaka (Keihan or Tannimachi Lines Temmabashi Station - see www.generalunion.org/losaka.htm for a map).
The agenda for the meeting is as follows:
1. To share information regarding the current situation at GEducation.
2. To report back regarding the 7 January collective bargaining session.
3. To plan our response if we cannot make any progress in collective bargaining. We are considering the following:
a. A report to work for all those were fired.
b. A strike by the currently working members (remember A option people are now being told that their contracts will not be renewed).
c. A court case for the fired workers.
4. We may also be holding a press conference on the 8th and the participation from one person from each of the groups mentioned above will be important if we are to get coverage.
Remember: In regards to 3a and b, you can only participate in these actions if you are a union member as we can only offer protection under the Trade Union Law to those who are members.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

seriously
Is G spot getting many new students to sign up? How many of the old ones are? I am asking this question because I really have no idea. I don't have contacts at Nova or g spot and have not seen this info in the news. Does anyone?
If the answers to the questions above are NO, then you are certainly kicking a dead horse. No students=no money=no company=get serious.
Liable? Maybe yes, maybe no.
Yes, you do need to be a lawyer to know what would be the chances of success, especially when one is in a country other than one's own. That's why people consult with lawyers. A number of people won major lawsuits against "old" Nova in the past; maybe time to oil up the armour again, for the "new" "Nova."

"In general, do whores teach people how to have sex? Think about this and read what I said again.
Oh, I see now. You were actually referring to eikawa teachers who have sex with their students while instructing them in language; thus, 'language whores!' Silly me, I thought you were drawing an analogy..."
Hehehe.. I can't figure out if you're joking here or not. Surely you understand what I meant, when I asked that question? Just to be boring and redundant, I'll explain. some eikaiwa "teachers" here speak for money, just as whores have sex for money. But just like whores do not teach people to have sex, most (but not all) teachers here do not teach people how to speak. Because there is a difference, your previous argument does not work.
"My point was that 'whores' have sex for money. English teachers teach for money. The common factor is doing a 'job' for money. Thus, if we equate teaching, on any level, with whoring, then any teacher who accepts remuneration for their services would be a 'whore.' But now that I see you were actually being literal, I guess we can just drop it, if you like."
I guess you don't see the difference between teaching and whoring after all. I suggest you visit both and find out. But don't go to an eikaiwa, go to a high school (or elementary or jr. high school). There, you can see real teachers. At an eikaiwa, you probably won't.
"On the point of teaching/not teaching, maybe you could clarify what you mean by 'teach.' Personally, I've never met anyone who was paid just to 'speak English.'"
In general, those who teach are those who introduce new knowledge to students, in the form of grammar, vocabuluary, etc. Eikaiwa "teachers" don't do that, aside from introducing some new slang, conversation patterns, or so on - they merely help stdudents recycle what they already know. Now, this is not the fault of those who work at eikaiwas; after all, an eikaiwa "teacher" is, by defintion, not required to be a true teacher.
Well, the smarmy repartee is
Well, the smarmy repartee is getting stale, so I'll just tell you what I really think and you can take it or leave it.
I've worked in just about every 'teaching' situation you can think of in Japan (including high school), and while the location might determine WHAT I teach, it never determines IF I'm teaching. The impartation of knowledge through junior and senior high school is important, but from the standpoint of English language teaching the limitations of school English instruction are so well known it's hardly worth mentioning (I wonder if you actually have any experience teaching English in a regular school in Japan). Despite many hundreds of classroom hours the average high school senior has difficulty forming simple sentences and can not carry on a basic conversation. I thought that the problem was the teachers at first, and that as a native speaker of English I could do better. But the reality is that there is a government mandated curriculum that must be covered, tests that must be prepared for, page after page of useless text examples that MUST be 'taught,' even though I could sum it up much more quickly and move on to more practical instruction. And all of this in classes of around 50 students, most of whom don't want to be there.
In contrast, I have junior high eikaiwa classes where the kids are reasonably fluent! It's very common in my high school eikaiwa classes that a new student will observe the class and be shocked by the level of fluency of the others, so much so that he/she doesn't think they can join. I'm sure any eikaiwa teacher on these boards can relate.
Now, you say eikawa teachers just have students recycle what they already know? It seems to me if that were the case MOST students wouldn't need eikaiwa to become good speakers of English. After all, it's completely redundant, right? The clear fluency superiority of students who study at eikaiwa argues against this. Obviously, students are learning something qualitatively different at eikaiwa, there's no other way to explain the gulf. As to whether this involves 'teaching' on the part of the instructor, we can quibble over semantics but results speak louder than your theories. My students can actually speak and use English, yours (if you actually are a school teacher in Japan) can't, unless you work at an international school, or something like that.
But I doubt you really have an advanced degree in the field of language teaching or Linguistics. If you did you would already know the theories that explain all this. You can 'explain' grammar, spelling, vocabulary, etc. all you like and students will be able to USE the information (in any practical way, at least) about as well as a chimpanzee. Language acquisition requires actual communication involving comprehensible input. This is pretty standard stuff for Linguistics majors, I'm surprised you don't already know it.
I agree
I have spoken to a couple of Japanese lawyers and they also feel there is a very good case against G.com. They came out and made verbal and written promises of employment, made payments to people, and then turned around and changed their story. There is a very very strong case (under Japanese law) for it to be classed as an unlawful termination. In the end, it's for the courts to decide.
With G.com, no students
With G.com, no students doesn't mean no money. The company has quite a lot of money from other sources. It is my no means a dead horse. It would, however, be a bad business decision to destroy whatever confidence the public had in the company, but as with Nova, it's the their own illegal (or at least unethical) actions that are leading them down that path. Employees who have been screwed over have every right to make a scene about it.
What is your point? Life
What is your point? Life sucks? Thanks for the useful post.
no students
Have you seen the figures or what do you base your assumption that G comm has a lot of money on? Business is not exactly booming for most companies in Japan now.
Regardless, employees can make a scene all you want. It is almost certain they will not get a dime though. As unethical as g spot etc. are....
Yeah well If you don't do
Yeah well If you don't do anything the "almost certain" will be a "sure". You'll be surely fucked. So what ? You like it or you're going to do something to make sure it doesn't append to you or anybody else ?
Bagging each other out
Many people seem to criticise others for their choice of work or educational backgrounds.
Are those people who look down on Eikaiwa (?) instructors really that high up on the food chain? I'd like to know what puts them in the position to judge others, especially on matters that some may have no control over.
Yes, Nova sucks. GCOM is just mutton dressed as lamb. At the end of the day, a job is a job and if it means people can make a living and do whatever they want to do here, who cares.
Are those people who love to shit on the 'losers' barristers or marketing gurus back home, pulling six figure salaries?
In my case, I had a way better than average salary and conditions back home. I also had travel benefits etc., no to mention a company car blah blah blah. I'm no better than the next guy or girl, and that success back home hasn't translated into anything astonishing or admirable here. But who cares, i'm here having the time of my life.
This website used to be a great place to read forums, have a laugh or the odd bitch and get some good insight into life in Japan. It has now become an avenue for cowards to attack others anonymously. It's also easy to fight this way because there's no proof that you are actually better than the rest.
Show us the money! Please go into elaborate details to qualify your opinions and justify your high standing in society.
Company car, you say?
Well, back home I was the night manager at Wendy's. I got to clean addicts' puke out of the restroom and serve food to girls too drunk to know they were about to lose their virginity to guys whose sole redeeming quality was that they had a company car. I gave ALL that up to come to Japan and teach English.
I'm so sick of posters who, in the process of justifying why they came to Japan, and how noble teaching English is, have to tell everyone all that they gave up when they came here. Let me be the first to be honest. Before I came here I was a welder. Not a qualified welder, just a guy who welded straight lines on the grates that crush garbage down in the back of garbage trucks.
I'm not sure what my point is here, it just fries my balls when people have to clarify in excruciating detail the amazing life they gave up in order to come to Japan, as just a subtle aside that validates their points.
We all banged supermodels, drove Ferraris, and pulled in seven-figure salaries back home. None of this makes your trite, repetitive points interesting or meaningful.
fecking poor or...
fecking bore? Or... gone to fuck sheep at the market, farmer boy? "I know you!"
i agree with the last couple
i agree with the last couple of posts. lets just get back to funny stories, somewhere to unwind and realise that where all in a similar boat.
and befor some one comes back with `yes but some of us have real concerns about welfare and the blah blah blah`, here are the sad facts.
g.com is going down. there is NO WAY foreigners will succesfully sue them and ven if so it aint gonna be worth nowt. check the stocks. g.ed is making a loss and their biggest yakiniku restaraunt just started losing money.
game over.
but its ok! were here!
no tell me your funny stories.
shoot em up
Lucky Japan has strict gun laws or I have feeling. Some would have gone into a few NOVA schools and unloaded on teachers, student, and anyones else getting in there way. Just being lied to over and over again being treated less than human. That is enough to drive anyone off the edge. Just be grateful NOVA teachers and students for the strict gun laws. Just be greatful.
Disagree. Plenty of meat on the G.com bones.....
I disagree that G.com is foundering. There's PLENTY of meat on them bones, if we win lawsuits.
As to whether we would win, while it is generally very agreeable to play doctor, I think it is a big mistake to play lawyer. We'll hold off on speculation until we have our legal consultations later this month. I personally think the cases are strong, but I am not a Japanese lawyer, and speculation is only speculation.
Again, if people are interested in joining with an independent group that is investigating the possibility of group lawsuits against G.com, please contact:

Calling for Evidence-NOVA Sept/Oct Hires
If your contract for Nova was renewed anytime from Sept. 1 onward, and especially if you were a FIRST-TIME contract employee, and VERY ESPECIALLY if you came to Japan from overseas for that contract, we need to connect with you.
"The Group" is an independent group of people who have been investigating the possibility of civil lawsuits against Gcom on behalf of "B" contract people, but we are ALSO trying to gather evidence for the possibility of submission to PROSECUTORS, and for other possible legal actions, regarding NOVA executives hiring of people near the end, when it may be, (but not yet proven), that they knew or should have known the company could not pay them.
We would like a copy of your contract, showing date signed by Nova and who signed it. We would like to know who recruited you, where you were recruited, and where you signed the contract. We would also like a letter from you saying how much money you lost, if any, by coming to Japan in reliance on the contract.
Please contact us at:
All info will be confidential until & unless you give subsequent and separate written permission to use it. We will try to arrange telephone contact with you if you are agreeable to it.

Final Call - If you would like to sue....
"The Group" is issuing its last call. Legal situation appears fairly good. If you are a "B" teacher not re-hired by G, or if you are an A teacher in similar situation and are willing to do a moderate amount of work, pay a moderate amount of money to assert yourself, (instead of just complaining), and maybe get some return, contact:
The door is closing, and will close by Jan. 15.
Do you mean Feb. 15?

New osaka schools
Hey, I've heard recently from some fairly well informed sources that 3 new schools will be opening soon in south osaka...not sure if thats the city or the prefecture.
Slightly less reliable info is that a namba school is in the works soon.
Anyone else have any info on this?
Feb. 15, Not Jan 15
Sorry! It's Feb. 15. Thanks for the heads up.
