NHK: Nova Teachers Haven't Been Paid

The Japanese media has clued into the fact that Nova teachers have not been paid yet. The Mainichi is typical of what is being reported:

Ailing NOVA under pressure to pay teachers' delayed wages

A labor union will ask a governmental labor inspection office to demand troubled English school NOVA pay its teachers their delayed wages.

NOVA started to delay paying wages to its Japanese staff members in late July, and has been late paying its foreign teachers since Sept. 14, General Union officials said.

The General Union in Osaka will formally ask the Osaka Chuo Labor Standard Inspection Office on Thursday to demand NOVA pay delayed salaries.

The union recently sent a letter to the president of NOVA and asked him to promptly pay staff wages. The letter demanded a reply by Sept. 26, but the company told the union to wait until Oct. 5 for an answer.

The Australian media continues its reporting by focusing on the fact that Nova is still recruiting.

Nova failed to pay its foreign workers on September 14. Six days later, the Sydney office held a live web chat recruiting more staff, encouraging potential teachers to apply for the 2008 recruitment program, but making no mention of the salary problems.

Nova told one candidate: "We will send a package of employment and visa documents to be completed to start the process of getting you to Japan!"

Similar chats were also held in Boston and San Francisco as recently as Monday 24th September, 10 days after it failed to pay staff on time.

And finally, there comes that Nova is to receive a massive injection of 10 billion yen. This is simply bizarre. 10 billion yen? That's more than Nova's worth. Here's PanicInducingGaijin to help you wrap your mind around this idea:

I know that I wouldn't invest or purchase the company, but I can't speak for everyone else in the world, so yeah, it's possible someone is going to give them a "huge financial injection." I have to wonder what "huge" means, though. $15-20 million would probably get them through a month's payroll, and probably double that would get them a month's payroll and rent at best.

If they get somewhere in the neighborhood of that much, it just delays the inevitable by a month -- it's like a broke crackhead stumbling across a rock someone dropped and thinking his problems are solved for all time.

On the other hand, if they get, say, $50-100 million, that could buy them enough time to fix things, you know, assuming that management had the will to actually reform from the ground up how the company is run. Even in the best-case scenario, it will be years before Nova can restore its brand image, and the company will have to downsize on a massive scale.

I'm not buying it, but I wouldn't dismiss the possibility out of hand -- maybe Monkey Man found someone with deep pockets who is dumber than he is.

Edit: I posted this before I saw the 10 billion yen claim. That's a lot of freakin' money for an individual to pony up -- it's about twice the value of the entire company. If it's true, it would be enough to buy time to fix things.

It makes absolutely no sense (why not just buy up 51% of the shares on the open market?), but the fact that it makes absolutely no sense gives me pause to wonder whether it might actually be true -- surely if they were going to concoct a lie they would have been able to come up with something better than that?

Another, much darker possibility, is that it IS bullshit. Maybe they spread the rumor today to get people to come in tomorrow, make an announcement on Friday night and promise that everything will be fine by Monday in order to get people to come in Saturday and Sunday, and then just never open on Monday. Monday is October 1. Maybe that means something.

I'll just have to wait and see, but then I have absolutely nothing riding on Nova's fate either way . . .

I'm going to throw one more possibility out there -- pump and dump. Perhaps -- and I'm basing this on nothing other than that the possibility exists -- someone with a significant amount of Nova shares has started a rumor that Nova's troubles are over, hoping to send the share price soaring and then dumping all his holdings and walking away. This would be a very, very dangerous game for Monkey Man, but he has himself a new, um, unconventional "business partner" who won't return 8 million shares . . .

I was hired through the Boston office in early May. After months of paperwork and waiting to get my passport, it seemed like I was finally going to be able to start my job in japan( they gave me an expected departure date for Nov. 6th). Yesterday (Sep.26th), i got a call from a representative from the Boston office telling me that the company was going through some "financial issues" and that only some of the instructors had been payed on time. She was very empathetic about the situation and told me that I was welcome to withdraw my application or leave it active while happily dancing the "wait and see jig". Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed over the news. I guess it was pretty irresponsible on my part for not following the company's financial profile more closely. But, it also seems extremely dishonest that they would go so far into the application process as to give me a confirmed departure date for November when the company is in such financial ruin. Thus, I'm at a crossroads. Do I start all over and try to find a job in the U.S.? Or should I wait to see if NOVA can get their shit together? Going to Japan has been a dream of mine for a while, but i think i might be better off trying to go with JET or a more reliable company. Moreover, the thought of an inconsistent paycheck in a foreign country makes me extremely nervous. I wouldn't even consider doing it in the U.S.

The "bicycle business model" that NOVA utilizes seems to be the serious downfall. It only works of there is a steady flow of income into the company. With the stress of the recent lawsuits coupled with government sanctioned branch closures and a lack of backup funds, there seems to be no proper solution besides completely revamping the company's strategic focus and financial goals. This option may work, but it's going to take a while to develop and implement, which makes me nervous about joining the company.

Thanks for all the posts everybody. Sharing information is the only way honest business gets accomplished. NOVA's lack of doing so seems to have gotten them in big trouble.

My friend, in Japan a paycheck is never certain unless you own your own company or if, you are of course, Japanese (I'm assuming your not). If you want to come over here just for fun for a year or two then find another company.................but now..........with this situation arising the market is going to be saturated with English Teachers and there will be few if any job openings. On top of that the salary will be decreased and the already abusive work environment here is only going to get worse for foreigners. Take my advice..............JUST VISIT! The Japanese love tourists! Just..............for Heaven's sake..........don't try to work here and have the same rights as a Japanese person!

Yeah, I love those "JAPANESE ONLY" signs they have here too. It just makes everyone feel so equal doesn't it! Many idiot foreigners here say..........well those signs are only in rural areas or in Hokaido........well guess what pricks? I live 5minutes outside of Tokyo in a very densely populated area and we have one of those Japanese only sings here too..........in big block letters. In fact, the first time I saw it a police officer was passing by it.......he didn't bat an eye. So, to all those Nova teacher's thinking they will get some help from the government...........you better think again. Where else in the world can you find "My Race only" signs on restaurant, bar, and interent cafe entrances?

So, I was supposed to depart for Japan to work for Nova on Sept. 25, but after hearing about all the craziness, I e-mailed them on Sept. 19 to withdraw my application for employment.

Nova (San Francisco office) e-mailed me yesterday to ask me to return my Certificate of Eligibility to them.

Is there a legitimate reason why Nova needs the Certificate of Eligibility back, or are they just yanking me around?

I do have the work visa in my passport; can I still use the work visa to get into Japan if I return my Certificate of Eligibility?

NO. Do not give it back. You will need it at customs. They screwed around with you all this time.............I wouldn't give it back. When you enter the country they will ask for that paper. I almost made the mistake of thinking it wasn't important when I came over (my company never mentioned bringing it) and I was told at customs if I didn't have it it would be a BIG problem. Even if you don't come here.........keep it for the trouble you went through just to piss them off.

As someone who lived in Japan and worked for Nova for 5 years, let me be the first to say there are way better options out there, e.g JET or government linked recruiting companies that place you in schools.
It really depends what you want to do. If you want to learn Japanese,JET is the best route. If you are just interested in repaying college loans or travelling in Asia, take a look at the other 'eikaiwa' schools.
Having said that, up to recently, Nova was actually the best option of all the commercial language schools (which doesnt say much for the industry). But going now would 100% not be a good idea. You should check out Japanese publications like Manichi, The Daily Yomiuri and The Japan Times to get an understanding of what kind of shape Nova is in at the moment

About the only good thing about Nova was that there was an instant social net (drinking and dating).. other than that my 7 months there were horrid!

My daughter was hired out of the Boston office and has been in Japan since March. You are very lucky you are here. We had to deposit money into her account when she wasn't paid on time. Immediately, she started job hunting and found a better one with better hours. There really are a lot of other companies. Just don't go through Nova!

In your defense I want you to know in the 13 month process between her interview and departure we investigated Nova as best we could and saw nothing to indicate an impending catastrophe.

nah buddy, the Japanese staff at NOVA havent been paid either. In fact, theyve been waiting for unpaid bonuses for quite a while. This isnt about racism its about a broke-ass company not paying its workers. The 1st time I lost money from unpaid wages it was with a a company in australia where everybody was anglo-saxon. the second time i lost money from unpaid work was when I had started my own consultancy and one of my major clients went under, so now all of your silly points have been refuted.

No salary in any country in any company is 100% certain. owning your own business is an even LESS certain way to get paid. Please don't post unless you have something intelligent to say.

I just got very reliable news saying that an American company, Digital Playground, is about to buy between 15-20% of Sahashi's shares in a deal which will see a reshuffle of senior management. My source wasn't sure what role Sahashi would continue to have in the company. Sahashi is expected to sign off on the deal in the next few days.

Very reliable news...ha ha - just google "Digital Playground" and what you get is information about an Adult DVD company. I just wish that people would stop posting false rumors - please stick to the facts ie: Nova is going out of business and people's jobs are on the line so false rumors even as a joke don't really help

I went into one of those bars that say "japanese only" once, it was refering to the fact that they couldnt SPEAK english and were sick of stupid foreigners shouting at them in a language they couldnt understand. Order in japanese and theyre happy.

Maybe some of them ARE indeed racist nationalists, but if people came into my workplace in australia and wanted service in a language other than english id be pissed too. The amount of people here Ive seen just walk up to someone and start blabbing away in english at full,native speaker rate without asking if the person can speak english 1st is incredible. Walk up to an american in the street and start speaking to them in french and see the reaction you get!

Keep in mind that even if the signs do indicate that they only want Japanese people there, thats pretty tame racism by world standards. Racism in most countries means violent attacks and murder. Keep it in perspective.

I'm one of the many unpaid ATs and last week a couple new guys arrived in my area. They were given the letter about the "financial difficulties" and told that they could withdraw if they wanted, but they came anyway. They finished OJT, presented by their smiley happy BT (who also hasn't been paid and has a wife and kid to feed). They're now wondering whether to go to work or not because they're not sure if there's any money on the way and they didn't realise they had basically signed up for a company who are offering little more than volunteer work at the moment.

Unless you have a lot of savings or a rich family don't come. The instructors and myself are all trying to get ourselves out of this mess, while also trying to support the new people who had come to Japan expecting to be paid. They won't be. Every job you apply for at the moment has an average of 50 applicants and positions are limited, so don't assume you can come and find a new job. When Nova goes under there will be 5000 instructors having to decide whether to battle it out for jobs, in competition with each other or go home. It's already started and it's not worth the stress. Stay at home, look on the internet for othr companies when the Nova debacle has subsided. Come to Japan, it's an amazing country. Just please don't come here with NOVA.

YOU own that Certificate of Eligibility AND the visa it will procure, not Nova. Do not give it back. Working for Nova would be a bad idea, but coming to Japan at some poitn would be a good idea and having a visa will always be a plus.
Your visa in no way obligates you to Nova.

I sometimes conduct interviews for part-time positions at my school and the ex Nova teachers are always the worst.Fat, smelly, ugly and turning up to interviews dressed like homeless people.Half of them were cross-eyed and looked like escapees from the island of Dr. Moreau.Sometimes i interview them just to get a laugh at how bad they are.They think their circus act holds up in a real teaching environment.

1) There are many good things about Nova and the experience in Japan they facilitate.
2) There are better places to work.
3) There are worse places to work.
4) Nova teachers can be consumate professionals with a natural affinity for teaching.
5) Nova teachers can be fat, worthless pricks.
6) Some of the biggest pricks are JETs.
7) Nova is not paying people on time and it seems reasonable to assume they`re in major financial difficulty.
8) It is generally agreed that moving country to work for a company in major financial difficulty will lead to disappointment.
9) The TESL market in Asia extends beyond Japan.
10) No English teacher can really claim to be a big-shot. It`s fun to work abroad, but it`s not rocket science so have fun and if you see Mr Scott be friendly to him - it will be his first time and he won`t know what to do.

umm..., I hate to say it but I sorta agree about the wrinkled shirt, backpack and ersatz Beckhan hairdo. Those have to go, guys. Especially the hair. It's played out, really. You know who you are.

Other than that, scott is out of line.

The funny thing is, a lot of the stuff Mr. Scott says is true. His tone may put people off- but I haven't exactly seen anyone leaping to the defense of NOVA's teachers when it comes to the quality of their lessons. NOVA is like a G-rated host/hostess bar. I don't know what it is with people choosing now and choosing an anonymous venue to vent their frustrations with anyone who has ever worked for Nova.

It's a company, boy, good and bad people work for it. People who go on to become great teachers and people who never realize their own incompetence work there.

I'm guessing that your story is either complete BS or based on the one time you interviewed one guy who was fat, dirty, and smelly. You also seem to operate on the assumption that every Nova teacher thinks his job is the be all and end all of teaching, which, much like Mr. Scott, makes you a lot less bright than the people, who you do not know, that you feel justified in ripping into.

Let's say your story is even partially true. You invite people into interviews because you hate them before you've met them and want to make them feel bad? Are you that petty and small that you spend your time with people against whom you're bigoted just to lord your power over them?

Wait, you've answered that. Yes, you are. Then, to drive the point home, you brag about it anonymously.

If you're running a school, which you're not, but if you are, your job is to make your teachers better; to see potential, not a company name on a resume.

Guys, I've been here quite a long time and, yes, there is some racism, but it's nowhere near as bad as you seem to have been led to believe.

The most important thing full-time employees of Nova need to know is that, IF you are still employed by Nova when the company goes under (i.e., you did not quit before) and IF Nova turns in the proper paperwork and you have the proper paperwork, it will take six months, but the government WILL top up the shortfall from the liquidation of Nova's assets and pay you up to 80% of your unpaid wages. I have personal experience with this, and the fact that I was not Japanese never entered into the picture. I and my foreign colleagues were paid in the same time, manner, and at the same percentage as our Japanese colleagues.
Unemployment insurance is an entirely different thing from getting unpaid wages. If you have worked full-time for more than six months and have made payments (through Nova) into the unemployment insurance program, you will get your benefit. It is highly unlikely that you will notice or suffer any sort of discrimination. (Your not being able to understand Japanese and the civil servants' not being able to understand English is NOT discrimination.)

As for the racism thing, no, foreigners do not have all of the same rights as Japanese citizens. This is true in every country on Earth. I have had a number of occasions to intereact with the Japanese government on a number of levels and my being a foreigner never hurt me in those interactions - from national health insurance and public hospitals to taxes, pension, unemployment insurance, and even a complaint filed with the MHLW and a pair of complaints I made to the police, I have never been treated with anything other than due professionalism. I even moved into an apartment with no reikin because the landlord had accepted municipal and national government subsidies. I even have an acquaintance who was given a decent apartment in a public housing development when his wife fell ill and he couldn't support and take care of her and his kid and pay the medical bills on his salary alone.

Be careful before you tar an entire nation in the process of shouting "racism." You do see the irony in your gripes, right?

I 2nd his/her advice, withdraw your application. I will give your more tips based on my research before coming here. Well, first, I did choose Nova because it was the most convenient, quickest, and paid the best of the eikaiwas (I was making 261000 yen/month after my probation).

JET pays the best (300000 yen/month), they pay for your flight to Japan and back, you have regular working hors and weekends and holidays off, and you will be able to actually learn Japanese words, phrases and customs. You don't have to, but there is far greater pressure to do so. At most eikaiwas, your chance to practice Japanese is greatly reduced because you're always working with English speakers and are only allowed to speak English. However, with JET you have to wait a very long time, go through a grueling application process, you have absolutely no control over where you're placed, and most likely you'll be far from the nearest city and may have little contact with other English speaking foreigners.

ALT dispatch companies are another option. I just jumped ship from Nova to a very small dispatch company. They offer the same benefits of JET, but with a greatly reduced pay check and no free flights to and from Japan. Some also do not pay for your vacation days (mine does). With JET and ALT dispatch, there is little room for advancement, though perhaps there's a bit more with dispatch companies. With ALT you may have to do more of your own work (I've had to so far), but you may find yourself with only 2 classes in a 6 period day sometimes. With eikaiwas the work is usually mostly done for you, but you have no free time during your shift. With ALTs, you do not have bosses around you everyday, unless you count the vice principal and principal, while eikaiwas you likely will. I usually had 4 bosses (AT, BT, and 2 AAMs) at my Nova branch every day, and 2 BTs when there was training.

Eikaiwas are good if you really want to be in or near a big city, hate getting up early everyday, prefer to have a weekday or 2 off, and want the easiest transition into Japan (most coworkers are English speakers). The best of the eikaiwas is a matter of opinion. If you do not mind teaching kids and prefer more holidays over extra pay, ECC is a good option. I have heard ECC Tokyo is better than ECC in Osaka. AEON is the other big eikaiwa that hires overseas and seems to have an OK reputation. I think the foreign staff has to sell products during capaigns several times a year, though I've heard you don't have to meet any sales numbers or anything. GEOS is similar to AEON (used to be the same company), though I've generally heard/read that AEON is better to work for than GEOS. There's some more eikaiwa options once you're in Japan with a visa, like Gaba and Berlitz.

You ever wonder why Nova is 90% Australian??? Because it is so fucking easy for an Australian to get a visa in Japan. Wow, I have to thank all of you. You're demonstrating exactly the qualities of Nova teachers that forced me to quit the company when I did. You're all behaving something like a Kinder Core class. Nova people are amongst the worst people I've ever had to work with.

I have met some instructors that I didn't really like but in my case I was happy to have met some cool people in my time. And I have never disliked someone because of their job or country. If someone is an ass they are an ass regardless of origin or background.
