G.education Starts Hiring Part-Timers
G.com is on a "hiring drive" and is looking for monkeys instructors to work for peanuts. According to the g.education/Nova website, they are looking to hire 20 part-time instructors.
Here it is in case it disappears in the future:
I suppose this amounts to their first attempt at advertising, but who are they going to attract for ¥1500 and hour? The transportation allowance of ¥100 per hour of travel is curious because I don't think there's a train in Japan that will take you anywhere in an hour for ¥100, so unless you happen to be living really close to a g.education school, this job a non-starter in the traveling expenses department right off the bat.
If it's only part-timers g.education is looking for, I wonder if they will sponsor visas? The standard response to "I want to work in Japan, how do I get a work visa?" used to be, "Join Nova, then move on," but that was when Nova existed.
The ad is a sign of how far teaching English in Japan has sunk into the muck. It wasn't too long ago that eikaiwa meant a full-time, decent-paying job in an office-like environment (GEOS and AEON at least pretended they were big, professional schools). You didn't have to have anything going on the side because your job usually kept you busy, and you saved your weekends for partying or kicking back. But if you did have something on the side, the money was pure gravy.
Eikaiwa has become a hustle of lining up part-time gigs without any benefits just to make ends meet. It's becoming Gaba: work for a pittance when you want. The only thing g.education needs to add to their description to make the job an exercise in indentured servitude is to tell teachers they have to be available to teach from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, and then call them the night before to let them know their schedules.
If anything, this ad should motivate instructors in Japan to go into business for themselves where better money and better working conditions can be had.

There's been some talk about creating a system to evaluate instructors to see if they are qualified to teach. Here's a no-brainer - anyone who signs up for this job must be very, very stupid or desperate and is therefore automatically eligible for deportation.
I was put on standby in January and told I'm not needed. Then I was told a week ago that I had to transfer because my branch has too many instructors and I'm not needed. Now I see they are trying to hire instructors for my old branch. Who is the farking bald-faced liar? G. non communications!

Just looking at that advertisement, and then looking at all the pain and sufferance Nova has caused me and my family, well, I feel like vomiting.
There mere sight of that stupid pink bunny makes me want to kill myself. I can’t believe I ever got sucked in by all that Nova hype and bullshit, and that people are making all the same mistakes I did, all over again, but with even worse work conditions.
Thanks to Nova, my wife and I lost everything.
We are living at my Japanese wife’s parents house, in very cramped and squalid conditions, with my father in law constantly berating my wife by saying “I told you that Nova was not a year or a career, and that is was a Yakuza run bullshit place with no spine. Now look at you! You should have married a Japanese man!”
I find the humiliation unbearable at times.
I suspect she is having an affair on the side, I don’t know, but I do know full well I am just the useless “gaigin” in our house, sifting through the papers daily looking for jobs, where they don’t want to pay much more than a person at KFC would get, and besides, I know I am up against 1000 or more other applicants to begin with.

I totally agree with "g.con are fucked", get out and do it as quickly as you can. They fire people indiscriminately and at the same time they try to hire more on the cheap. This is a clear sign that they cannot afford the instructors they need, but they must somehow provide lessons to students. This situation will probably worsen in April, when lots of teachers will leave.
Don't know their financial situation, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if, in the absence of a proper business plan and coherent management, the banks would withdrawn their credit. In my opinion G-CON is already fucked, it's only a question of time. So, no more sympathy for those who choose to stay on, if they'll be screwed again soon. Open your eyes!!!!
On the cheap? The minnimum is more than my starting salary at nova. I`m switching to the ALT position in April, but I`m considering taking the side cash.
If the list of schools where positions are available is right, then the branch were I was working, post exhumation, and the brand spanking new branch in the town where I live (a leisurely 4 minute walk away) require people. Why then was I given a letter which stated...we have had difficulty acquiring a workplace for you in your region...?

I know three guys from the former "Nova" in a similar position to the guy who posted above, who you claim is a troll, and the word "suicidal" could be used to describe each and everyone of them. They have all openly talked about killing themsleves, and they have caused a lot of worry to their wives in Japan, and families back home, let alone to me. One guy in fact tried to take his life. So, don't be so sure about the "troll" aspect is the moral of the story. There are a hell of a lot of people who gave Nova their all, only for it to blow up in their faces, and they are today living with the fact they wasted a decade or two in a dead end, no skills aquired, low paying job, all based on blind faith in that Saruhashi's lies and crap. It is very tough for those people, especially when faced with the reality of now having to go back to base one, for some lousy 1500 yen per hour, competing against 19 to 21 year old kids, who are often chosen instead of them, simply because of youthful genki factor.
I feel for you, dude, no matter what everyone else says about things you should have done. I'm also married with a kid, also an ex-Nova teacher. I'm also an experienced architect, but needed 5 years here to find a job in my field that didn't require local knowledge and perfect Japanese. I don't feek like a loser for having worked for Nova. Any job is what you put into it, and teaching may be one of the ones you can directly see the results of your efforts. But I know Japanese wives and relatives can be pretty mercenary. I was lucky to finally find a job just after Nova went down, but of course it's never financially good enough for my darling wife. And while her relatives are all so generous at New Year's, we had no offers of help whatsoever when Nova sank. There's often no idea among spouses here that they might even have some responsibility to contribute to a marriage by getting a job themselves, especially since we are the ones in the xenophobic foreign country with no discrimination laws and a very inaccessible written language. Instead, we are accused of being irresponsible for no earning enough. I know people will say "leave your lousy wife" or something, but I'm sure there are many more like us. As others have said, this is NOT worth killing yourself over. Things are shite right now. But you should be proud you had the balls to come here in the first place and do something with your life. Most people from your home country could not do what you did. You took risks, some of which are now coming back to hit you, but at least you tried to go beyond the daily routine of life at home. If you have been here 10 years, you must have a ton of good memories, many of which you hopefully shared with your wife...remind yourself and also her of the good times. Work out how you can experience them again. Look beyond the town/city you are stuck in now (I had to move across the country for this job). Or look beyond Japan. Even negative events in life give you oppotunities for growth, in fact, often more so than positive ones. Yes, there are people who will always have better chances than you thanks partly to good luck...people in banking, IT, etc, do really well here...did you choose your Uni major thinking about how it would serve you living in Japan? I'm sure I didn't...wish I'd stuck with my original plan to study computer science. Others have better support at home, parental cash...my old RAAM even won a million yen in the lottery...certainly didn't need it, although probably does now. If you compare your life to others, you will never feel satisfied. If you keep communicating with as many people as you can, and keep your name out there, you should eventually discover the opportunities that suit you. It was in the end pure fluke that I found the company I work for now, despite years of systematic searching. You know you father-in-law is right about Nova. The fact it went down has to be the impetous for you (and most of us all) to move on to something better. You also know he is wrong about who your wife should have married. I wonder how much marital bliss his wife is wrapped in now? I sincerely wish you the good luck and strength you deserve to overcome this.

I don't know what kind of contract you had at nova, but if you think that 1500 yen per hour with no paid holidays and transport fee are a good deal, I understand why the eikaiwa industry can now be put on a pair with the fast-food one. The industry is now (actually it has been for a while) full of cheap and mostly unqualified language instructors ready to work for peanuts. Go on and work for them, but the next time the don't pay your salary don't come to this blog to complain about it. In the mean time I keep working for my usual 3000 yen per lesson.

I think what they're doing is trying to transfer those they believe will stay (job market is beyond saturated here, plus, some are just too lazy to even try to find another job), so they can lure in new teachers with attractive locations. Once they're in, they'll pull the same crap on those teachers, and re-advertise the attractive locations.
They're likely having a hard time getting people to fill their less attractive locations.
Nova could do this before as they'd use people from overseas desperate to just work anywhere in Japan, with the expectation they'd quickly move to a big city. G Comm can't afford the massive overseas hiring that Nova did, let alone domestic, so they're sending whoever they have to these crappy locations, and rehiring in the more attractive ones...ones that people in Japan would apply for.

Realistically, I think if you have either, you can get by on working as an ALT or at an eikaiwa. The company probably won't care, so long as you have something and fit their needs.

They have an insane hiring system just so you can get paid the same peanuts every other eikaiwa offers. "Wow, I passed all that BS, with unpaid training, just so I can make 250000/month, work on the weekends, have non-consecutive days off, and get spied on during every lesson."
It amazes me that 'some' people think that 1,500 per lesson is a good deal. If you think that's a good deal, then you are officially a loser. Personally, I wouldn't get out of bed for such a low amount.
P.S- I do understand that some of the posts referring to the grand total of 1,500 are being sarcastic.But some aren't.
It is easy to see what Gcon are doing. They couldn't afford to pay you your old salary so they dumped you! They will now offer your job back for a fraction of your salary and benefits. Sounds like a winner to me!
Gcon has only been able to get 60 000 students. I think that most of you guys out there on the fly should organize your own schools. It is pretty easy.

This is actually pretty similar to the Korporate Amerika I worked for before I'd had enough and took a career break as a teacher in Japan. Full timers have been getting replaced with part timers left and right, so they have to pay less benefits...don't even get me started on how much benefits have been cut! Death to Korporations!!!! lol
If you haven't noticed, the job market is still flooded. Too many teachers, not enough jobs. Sure, there are some great paying jobs out there, but most are taken, and when one is available, you're competing with 300 other applicants. I know because I've tried.
The English companies know this and are taking advantage of the situation. Hence, the low hourly/weekly/monthly wages. Sure, you can try to manage a bunch of privates, but it's not easy, not stable, and privates don't sponsor visas.
I suspect, or at least hope, this will no longer be the case next year at this time. The lingering Nova teachers who can't find a stable, decent paying job are going to start heading back home. There's no longer a Nova bringing over massive amounts of new teachers, so companies will have to choose from fewer when hiring domestically.
what also sucks..as an aside...is for people trying to have sayonara sales..there are no new clowns coming in to buy up all our slightly used junk.
people have to stand firm..but without any kind of organization...when one is offered 2000 yen a lesson..you have to take it, cuz there will be some 23 year old to whom thats the most money he's ever seen.
G-Com people should get out of teaching altogether. I moved to Niseko to run a bar after the fall of the bunny in October. Heading off to Macau in April. Still lots of demand for jobs in Hong Kong, Macau, and Korea. Pay is better too.
Its taken a bit of time but this is the result of my talk with Labour Standards. They were very helpful and explained everything but theres not much they can do. They said it seems G Con are staying JUST within the law for the most part, 3 days to decide if I want to transfer to the sticks, was unusual they said, but not necessarily illegal. Not posting copies of their rules and regulations in the branches was the only thing they said was definitely in breach of Labour Standards.
They said I have 2 options 1)take G Con to court, pay for a lawyer (right!) and let the court decide. 2)enter into a dispute with G Con telling them I feel they are dismissing me unfairly and ask for compensation. The Labour Standards office can then mediate between us so we can reach an agreement. Its free and usually only takes a couple of hours. The problem IS...nothing they do or say is binding, unlike the court. They can ASK G Con to attend, but they cant FORCE them to. I seriously doubt G Con would show up, however its really my only option. The guy at Labour Standards said it would be better to get together with other people in the same situation and make it a class action, however, to date, Im the only person in this situation that I know of in my area. Is there anybody else out there in the same boat?

It's survival of the fittest right now. There's a buttload of PT positions too, but they're a bit risky as you have to piece them together from different companies to make a survival wage.
I went in today and was told I have three options (I'm on standby now) 1) sue, 2) dispute like you said and 3) quit and get a year of unemployment pay. He said the same thing about G. non-communication's shady lawyers. Everything is just within the law. A lawsuit will cost a lot of time and money. Unless you're in with abig group, have good translators and live fairly close to the right courthouse forget it. The best way to f**k g. non-communications over is to beat them at their own game. Take their customers away from them!
And deny them new teachers. We really should be taking this fight to our home countries, and make sure people know just how crap a place Japan is to work now. Some of our more articulate colleagues should appeal to newspapers, current affairs programs, government agencies etc. Some people back home have heard about NOVA's bankruptcy, but with Japan generally having a cute image in western countries it seems to be hard for people to understand just how bad it is.

I dont know why some of you out there dont get together and open your own schools. You will be getting some pretty decent money this week or the next. Rent a small office near to where your old school was. Start advertising and get the word out there. I did it and am pleased to say that it is a success. It couldn't have been any easier!
If G-Comms publication of employment angers you then take the higher ground.
You should :
(1) Think positively about the steps you have taken to find new and better work.
(2) Be glad you are not there anymore as it wasn't a nice atmosphere to be in at all.
(3) Be glad if you have found new and better work.
or
(4) If they dismissed you before and they require your services again answer firmly and confidently that you no longer wish to work there.
I know this is all pretty straightforward stuff but we mustn't lose perspective of who we are and what values we have in these uncertain times.
I certainly have no intention of returning to those cum-bubbles (unless of course they come crawling on their knees offering me MORE than I was making before! But that aint gonna happen.), I hope they collapse in a screaming heap. They will of course, on their way down, blame it on "the lazy gaijin" who don't want to work. They've already lied about us to students, and though they aren't all stupid, I'm sure we can all reel off a list of our "favourites" who would believe anything bad about foreigners.
I wonder what Hello Works position is about refusing to take up an offer of a job too. They might dock your dole.
I do feel better not having to endure day after day of uncertainty with those cock-swallowers, and while the job search continues I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand there are plenty of jobs to apply for. In the last 3 weeks I've applied for 18 places and had 5 replies and 4 interviews to date. More than I had in 3 years on the dole back home!
However, many of the jobs are only part-time, pay below what I need to survive, some of their other conditions are sub-par too. And only 5 out of that 18 replied at all.
Anyway, one big, hairy, unwashed brown eye to G Conn, and PLEASE don't anyone take them up on their "offer".
Today I am thanking God that back in Oct I got my foot in the door with a business English company. With G-com I took Option B and wasn't rehired. Thank CHRIST. I applied at Hello Work, worked 6 hours a week and managed to make ends meet. Today I got my back pay from Nova and a lot of work from 3 B/Eng companies. It's not all doom and gloom. Now with this back pay that we are all getting we can make it. It just takes a bit of time. All these companies are hiring now. You can work for all of them! Get some privates on the side and you're laughing. Get out now!
...and just to add to the hilarity...my AAM rang about 2 hours ago and asked if I wanted to come back...
I had that 'smile training' recently too. A rather disturbing experience actually. Did the guy do little monkey dances and make a point of insulting experienced teachers whilst praising newbies? That's what he did at my training, and If I see him again I'll be tempted to tell him to get lost 'cause I just landed a much better job.
My branch is fairly isolated and they whittled our numbers down to four in february, lying to people and showing absolutely no tact in the process. Over the last week three of us got new jobs, and now they're freaking out 'cause they'll have one teacher to handle 300 students in two branches and no-one's gonna come here.
Inayoshi Shachou, pissing off all your instructors just before the peak sales period, and just before the peak hiring period, is the height of stupidity.

Just for a bit of context...I just saw a job advertised on gaijinpot, making kebabs in Tokyo, training and uniform provided...230,000 to 250,000 a month...the same or even BETTER than some eikaiwa are offering now. Ahh, if only they used lamb instead of beef here...

I love it, and can't wait until April when more instructors will leave and many of them without even bother to tell them beforehand (no contracts anyway).
