Expoland: Where's the Outrage?

As you already know, one woman died and 19 others where injured in the roller coaster accident at Expoland in Suita, Osaka Prefecture.

It's taken a week for the details of the story to get sorted out. At first, it was thought that metal fatigue caused the wheel axle on one of the cars to break off. Then we learned that the roller coaster hadn't been inspected on schedule. And after that, we found out that a loose bolt caused the wheel axle to separate.

If you turned on the TV news, you would have been treated to computer re-enactments of the accident, complete with detailed views of the roller coaster's wheel assembly and video footage of grind marks showing the roller coaster had skidded for nearly 500 meters after loosing a wheel. That, and endless discussion about JIS, Japanese Industrial Standards. When the media found out that the roller coaster had not been inspected according to JIS standards, they made that the focus of their coverage. Experts were interviewed to comment on the standards and explain that ultrasound was used to look for cracks and explain how the wheel assembly needs to be taken apart and inspected. Much emphasis was also given to the fact that roller coaster inspections fall under the same standards as those for elevators.

But there's one thing missing: nobody's been called on the carpet. Saburo Yamada, the president of the company that operates Expoland, has yet to stand behind a folding table or cheap metal desk, bow his head, and offer his heartfelt apologies.

When much of the story was about how slow Schindler was slow in issuing an apology.

So where is Expoland in all this? One person is dead and 19 injured because of their negligence. Where's the outrage? Or is the media more interested in reporting on the minutia of industrial standards?
