ABC Language School Shuts its Doors

According to the Asahi Shimbun, Osaka-based ABC Language School suddenly closed its doors at the end of June leaving student refunds and and teacher's salaries in the lurch. A group of students has organized in Osaka to prepare a lawsuit saying that ABC was soliciting contracts even though its business was on the brink of collapse.

ABC employs over 100 teachers and 1,000 students in schools in Umeda and Namba in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto. ABC's selling point was its private lessons at the dirt-cheap price of 1,990 yen for a 50 minute class.

Approximately 130 students, who paid hundreds of thousands of yen for lessons, organized a meeting held on the 16th in which their representative explained that ABC was intending to file for bankruptcy. The group is planning to sue ABC for fraud based on the complaints of 5 students who purchased lessons just before the school suddenly shut its doors. When interviewed by the Asahi Shimbun, the president of ABC said that sales plummeted the day after Nova was punished [by METI] and that he would cooperate in refunding lessons and paying the teachers. ABC apparently has debts of approximately 28 million yen.

A separate article in the Yomiuri Shimbun illustrates the suddenness of the closure. On June 29, the day ABC closed its doors, a student transferred 150,000 yen to the Kobe school that morning after being told by the president of ABC to send the money by the next day since they were in the middle of a campaign. How low is that?

Is there some sort of "Nova Effect" at work here that is driving students away from eikaiwa across the board? Is there any point in teaching English in Japan anymore? If Nova, the largest English school operator in Japan, has been exposed as a dishonest, thieving company, how do you trust the other schools? Who else has skeletons in their closet? I've said it before, but it bears repeating: eikaiwa is about putting bums in chairs, it's not about teaching. It's a business, not a place of education. Don't stay long.

関西で英会話学校を運営する「ＡＢＣランゲージスクール」（本社・大阪市、中村功社長）が６月下旬に突然休校し、受講生への受講料返還や講師の給与支払いが滞っている。受講生らは１６日に大阪市内で集会を開き、「経営が行き詰まっていたのに新規契約を結んだ」などとして、中村社長を刑事告訴する準備に入ることを決めた。

関係者によると、同社は０４年以降、大阪の梅田と難波、神戸、京都に教室を置き、受講生は約１０００人いる。講師は約１００人。「５０分１９９０円の低価格で外国人講師のマンツーマンレッスンを受けられる」というふれこみで受講生を集めていたが、先月下旬、梅田校などに休校を知らせる紙を張りだした。

契約時に数万～二十数万円を支払った受講生は被害者の会を結成し、１６日の集会には社員も含め計約１３０人が参加した。会の代表者が、同社が破産を申し立てる方針であることを説明。休校直前に受講料を納めて一度もレッスンを受けていない５人を中心に、詐欺の疑いで告訴する準備を進めることを決めた。

中村社長は今月２日、朝日新聞記者の取材に「（英会話学校大手の）ＮＯＶＡに対する行政処分翌日から、新規申し込みが大きく減った。受講料返還と給与が支払えるよう努力している」と話し、約２８００万円の負債があることを明らかにしていた。

大阪・英会話学校の休校問題　被害者の会結成

英会話学校「ＡＢＣランゲージスクール」（本社・大阪市北区）の大阪・梅田校など全４校が先月末、突然休校した問題で、受講生ら約１３０人が１６日、大阪市内で集会を開き、「被害者の会」を結成した。休校直前に契約してレッスン料を前払いしたが、一度も受講できなかった人もおり、同社の中村功社長（５２）を詐欺容疑で告訴することを検討する。

同会によると、４校は現在、すべて閉鎖しており、中村社長は弁護士に破産の手続きを依頼したという。

梅田校が休校した６月２９日に、レッスン料１５万円を振り込んだ神戸市の会社員女性（２９）は、前日に中村社長から「キャンペーン中なので、明日までに金を振り込んでほしい」と言われたといい、「逃げ得は許せない」と憤っていた。
