Ahead of GEOS's Wednesday scheduled announcement of the measures they will take in response to the closure of its schools in Australia, will Tsuneo Kusunoki address the giant sucking sound that everybody is hearing?
Meanwhile, a former director of GEOS Adelaide said the company acted as cash cow for the Japanese parent company.
Gary Maserow, who resigned in October, said he had "no idea" why GEOS Adelaide and eight other Australian GEOS companies went into voluntary administration.
Six of the nine companies recorded profits in the last financial year, according to financial reports completed by BDO Kendalls.
Mr Maserow, who was also regional co-ordinator for all GEOS colleges in Australia and New Zealand, said there was "enormous pressure" placed on the company to send Australian profits to Japan.
"Japan demanded and demanded," Mr Maserow said.
Dharmadasa Ratnayake Mudiyanselage, a director of the nine Australian companies, said the companies had liquidity problems.
Mr Maserow said he had "no idea" why all of the companies went into voluntary administration.
"What happened in the last six months?" Mr Maserow said. "Because the audit was fine."
Mr Maserow dismissed suggestions the global financial crisis had contributed to the collapse.
The Australian GEOS companies had two other directors at the time of the collapse: David Emert and Japan-based Tsuneo Kusunoki, who founded GEOS in 1973.
Mr Emert and Mr Kusunoki did not respond to calls.
Administrators Ernst & Young are continuing to investigate the collapse.
Let's recap that passage:
Healthy companies don't keel over and die over night. It would take an act of supreme stupidity on GEOS's part to siphon so much money out of its Australian schools that it would kill a popular and profitable part of its business. This suggests that there are more seriously underlying problems at GEOS. Is GEOS seriously hard up for cash? Or has Kusunoki seen the writing on the wall and chosen to line his pockets?
The stories out of Australia don't seem to match Kusunoki's assertions that the closures are a made-in-Australia problem and that everything's just fine in Japan. When the director of a school doesn't even know what happened and the people who presumably do aren't returning calls, something is wrong. Where did the money go? Moreover, if GEOS is so demanding, which overseas schools are next? Asia? North America? Europe?
Tomorrow, Mr. Kusunoki has to make some effort at helping the students he robbed of their language studies, but also needs to address the issue of the money if he intends to restore any trust in the GEOS brand.

Damn Shawn, everyone knows
Damn Shawn, everyone knows you hate eikaiwa and all, but you sure are trying your best to milk this whole GEOS thing.
Gary
Those people who know what Gary has been up to the last few months know that he's not as innocent as he makes himself out to be. He has a vested interest in seeing GEOS fail now.
Wow, Tim sounds a little
Wow, Tim sounds a little touchy! I think Shawn is just trying to get the information out there, we sure as hell won't see any real insight in the Japanese news.
Meanwhile, can any GEOS teachers that have not already jumped give us some insight into the morale at the branches? There have been reports that many teachers are simply not showing up for their shifts, and that staff are pretty much tied up with angry students trying to get out of their contracts. It sounds very similar to the last weeks of NOVA.
If there is any teacher still working for GEOS - you had better act soon - all the April jobs are filling. Do you honestly trust that your next paycheque is going to arrive?
I am not aware of anyone not
I am not aware of anyone not showing up for their shifts. I know many people currently employed with GEOS and all have reported to work as scheduled and none have stated that they wouldn't.
I'm a Geos teacher. While I'm
I'm a Geos teacher. While I'm sure it would be great for you guys to hear that the roof is caving in as possessed, bloodhungry students are looting and lobbing grenades as gaijin jump ship & managers run for cover, business seems to be continuing as usual. Yes, we all know there are big problems and shenanigans afoot but you wouldn't think it from walking into a Geos "school". It's all broken underneath but nothing is showing on the surface.
Staff and students are showing up as usual. Students are renewing contracts as usual. Visitors continue to walk into schools and sign up. Kids aren't so bad because most parents pay monthly, so the most they can lose is 10,500 yen (1 month fee for 4 lessons) if anything happens to Geos. It's the adult students that have recently joined and renewed that I feel bad for. Some of these guys are paying 250,000 to 420,000 yen per year. I have one private student paying almost 700,000 yen/year. These guys will really lose out if anything happens.
We all know that there are all kinds of things going on at head office. The only overtly out of place thing I've seen is the massive moneysaving drive going on. Example, Pixar characters on Geos posters have been replaced with Geos' own design. But the most bizarre thing is that Geos hasn't placed any new job postings on gaijinpot since just before the Australian school closures. They used to post a new job lead every 3-4 days. Either they've fulfilled their staffing needs (I doubt it), or they see an impending closure & futility of it all and have decided to save the 40,000 yen-or-so it costs to post a job there.
P.S. My manager seems to think that US schools will be the next to go.
Not Gary's fault.....Look to the CEO
I worked with Gary for many years in a management position in GEOS. I left several years ago because I was disgusted by the unethical behavior from the top people in the company (Mr. K and his cronies). The unethical behavior involved money matters and the way he treated his employees. I am surprised that this company didn't go down many years ago. Gary is NOT to blame in anyway whatsoever. I am sure Gary ran so he wouldn' t be put in jail on behalf of Mr. K. My guess is Gary was having his hand forced to send "unethical monies" to Japan. He most likely decided that the world looked nicer from outside of the prison walls. He is a smart man! Many people stayed with GEOS longer than their intellect told them they should. Working at GEOS is like being in a dysfunctional relationship. It feels comfortable after a while. Kudos to Gary for getting out instead of going down with the other folks. I got out a lot sooner and I am SOOOOOO glad!
One minor correction is
One minor correction is needed in your summary. The story said "Six of the nine companies recorded profits in the last financial year" not "had record profits".
Hopefully it all gets resolved soon without too many casualties. The Australian governments seem to be trying to make sure the students don't lose out. It will be interesting to see what attitude they take with the directors...
So what's the deal with this
So what's the deal with this kusunoki character?
Seems like a fat, greasy little man with Napoleon syndrome. I've seen the "training" videos that have been sent out to GEOS schools. 30 minutes of inferiority complex driven, hate-filled ranting in disgracefully poor, broken English about how foreigners "need to grow up".
I no longer have the videos, but can someone who does please upload them to youtube?
GEOS hiring & gaijinpot
GEOS are still hiring as normal, as I know a couple people that recently attended interviews. They last posted ads around the middle/end of last month, so my guess is they are just out of their allotment for now.
Probably see some new ones in a few weeks.
The Elephant in the Room
We keep touching and then drifting away from those last half 09 managerial and other significant staff departures. We know that Melbourne, Sydney, Perth GEOS saw a deal of ship jumoing. (Can posters help with information on departures from other GEOS Oz schools?)
We know that experienced staff were simply replaced from within the organisation. Who made those replacement decisions?
The elephant in the room is what did those evacuees know? Did they have an obligation to communicate any existing concerens to monitoring authorities? Did they have an ethical duty to tell their employees and colleagues about any concerns they had? Are the receivers going to talk to those ex-GEOS staff? Are the state and federal agencies going to talk to them? We rave on about standards and quality control and legislation and policy but if there is trouble in these types of education enterprises and people simply look after themselves, what is the future of Australian education export?
The elephant is roaming the room. Can you hear it?
Rumour
As for who knew, I've been asked by agents and other school marketing staff at least 20 times in the last half year about GEOS's impending doom. This was no secret, and certainly no surprise.
Many of the people you are
Many of the people you are referring to tried on many an occasion to inform the directors, here and in Japan, that what they were doing was not only bankrupting oceania, but also breaking the law. This will all come out, you don't work in a company for 15 years and simply decide to resign. Many of the Managers questioned the independent audits, however, they were all told to shut up and to stop causing trouble, all in all, 8 senior managers had resigned 18 months prior to the collapse of Oceania. Mr K was a dictator that didn't see the benefit of his team and saw any comment different from his own as being a threat, so he was happy to have new management come in as they were easier to dominant. The blame lies squarely at the feet of the directors here as well as mr K, who promised to return all monies back to oceania, but of course was never going to.
The Elephant in the Room
As one of the 9 Managers who left (if I am correct the order was Adelaide, Sydney City, Gold Coast, Brisbane, (Gold Coast again - New Manager lasted two months), Perth, Melbourne, Cape Town and finally Sydney Manly (as well as the previous Managers of Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne), I would stress that we were are strong and united group. We were a healthy operation as a region. That is a FACT!
From January 2009 Mr Kusunoki's involvement in Oceania was virtually on a daily basis....the theme was simple 'send cash' The abuse towards Managers reached new heights, to the point of being intolerable. FACT!
Every Manager warned the Directors both in Australia and in Japan of sending more money than we actually had. Managers were very vocal on this. FACT
Mr Kusunoki took control of new appointments to replace leaving Managers. This was formerly the responsibilty of the Regional Coordinator but he had no say in the new appointments. FACT
Many of the support staff of the schools had to be part of the V-chats. They were exposed to the rantings of Mr Kusunoki. FACT
Australia was assured that we would be repaid the loans lent to other regions. FACT
No attempt was made to replace the Perth Manager during his 6 weeks notice period. FACT. Why would you leave one of your most profitable operations so vulnerable?
The only remaining Manager of the 'old order' was in Cairns. Perhaps he can shed light as to why the Directors placed ALL the colleges into Voluntary Administration. The Colleges were not placed into Administration by Federal agencies. FACT
Businesses that may be experiencing cash flow problems (and many do) are able to trade their way out of it. Why were ALL Colleges placed into VA? There was an email from the Cairns Manager (who had taken on the role of Regional Coordinator) that Perth had been reaccredited by the State Government. FACT
The Gold Coast College was full. FACT
Adelaide College was doing very well. FACT
Only the Directors of the Company (and perhaps even the current Managers) can provide answers as to why ALL were placed into VA.
I am led to believe that the new Brisbane Manager resigned two days before the Administrators were called in.
Perhas she can shed some light?
Several of the ex Managers have taken a very bold move to start up on their own. Good on them. For those who may believe they wished this on GEOS, this could not be further from the truth.
The Elephant in the Room
As one of the ex nine I would certainly agree with the last comments. We were all passionate about our role and felt priviledged to be working in a job which we loved every day; we strived to give the best experience to the students, kept the academic standards high and wanted the best for our school and staff. In essence we held everything together but there is only so much you can do for so long. We were a very close group and were distressed when the CEO started to become more vocal and agressive in January 2009. As much as we were passionate about our jobs it became intolerable - the constant video chat sessions which lasted hours, the abuse (which became more and more personal) and then the financial irregularities began....we REPEATEDLY told the DIRECTORS about these issues and were promised everything would be sorted out, we believed it would be...this is only the fault of the Directors of the company who led highly profitable schools into VA through their own stupidly and greediness fullstop. The ex nine left because their voices were not heard, they left because they knew they were better than that ....but what about the recent new managers?
I was one of the new
I was one of the new managers, my comment was at 1816, I couldn't agree more with the comments after mine, I was only exposed to the pressure that you had to endure for the shortest of time and my greatest level of empathy goes out to all of you who were able to endure such irresponsible and poor leadership for so long. I had taken the position, however, as soon as i was privy to the financial records and the complete inadequacies of the directors I said that I would only be an acting principal until someone else crazy enough would take on the insurmountable challenge. I wrote many an email to the directors and Japan expressing in no uncertain terms the predicament that our school was in, but was met with insipid apologies and meaningless comments such as "only cash can fix this situation", which my response was, yes I agree, however you have it all. An hour before the administrators came in to our ridiculous management meeting in Sydney I was asking what our exit strategy was if/when our cash flow runs out, as my report to the group was that we had enough money until the 5th of Feb. It was my decision that if I didn't receive any direction I was going to tell my staff that it was time to look for another job, it as an extremely difficult decision to make, but one taken from me by another poor decision made by the directors. There wasn't a person in Australia that didn't try to make it work, however, the incompetencies of those above made it impossible, but I'm not telling anything you don't already know. Bring on the truth and the downfall of Mr K ockhead.
Good to know you cared 1:01.
Good to know you cared 1:01.
I think, if I have the correct person, I worked with you. It all makes sense now. It really went downhill in Sydney the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009. I couldn't understand why, but now it all makes sense. I hope Mr. K rots. What a horrible person.
Best of luck to you and your future plans, DELTA, etc.
Treat the press conference with contempt
To GEOS Australia teachers..
You already know what this twat is going to turn round and say in his press conference today "Oh the GEOS collapse is all to do with bad management and lazy staff in Australia". etc etc
Just treat what he has to say with utter contempt - don't get wound up by it, else he's already got his victory
P.S. Can anyone put up a video clip of one of these interrogation videos?
Get a grip folks
I'm still at my school, and there has been absolutely no change in morale - either on the part of the teachers or the higher-ups. Salaries have been paid in full, and on time, for as long as I've been at the company. In fact, over the past month there has even been an *influx* of students. Even schools that aren't doing particularly well are remaining open. Likewise, there hasn't been any unusual pressure to get students to renew. It's been business as usual.
So, sorry, but for those of you waiting for GEOS to go under, you may have a little more waiting to do! I haven't seen a single sign that this company is about to fail. On the contrary, it seems to be thriving. and believe me, I've kept my eyes open.
Companies have setbacks. Toyota's is much worse, and you can bet they're not going under.
Re: Get a grip
I dont know what GEOS school you are at, but the ones I worked at are in MAJOR F-ing trouble. Student numbers are way the F down. My school had a major run on refunds lately...and we have lost nearly 65%of the students out of my school in the past 12 months due to lost jobs, spouse/student got their salary cut, deep recession, and just plain scared to death about losing their money at GEOS. Students are waiting to the last day of their contracts to decide to renew or not and most decided not to citing concerns of GEOS financial health and they are not afraid to say that to the staff or teachers. The students do NOT believe the manager or the head office that everything if fine, because clearly things are NOT fine at all.
Just recently GEOS is now charging over 80,000yen for contract cancellations with waiting times up to 3 months for refunds to arrive.
I have read the Japanese posts on the internet and GEOS topped the customer complaint list for english schools by a wide margin!! The comments of frustration, anger, and fear reflects exactly whats going on with students in the GEOS schools.
You are saying you havent seen a single sign that GEOS is not about to fail?? Bullshit!!! What was the deal last fall when GEOS paid the j-staff late twice?? Whats with the deal with GEOS Australia being closed by the government with the high possibilty of criminal charges being filed against those who illegally sent all the money to Japan?? Why did mr. kusunoki lie and state the GEOS Australia was not his company and that GEOS Australia was using the GEOS name..which is complete attempt at a cover-up. Why does GEOS constantly lie and hide information from the students, staff and teachers and keep everyone in the fucking dark?? mr. kususnoki and GEOS got something to hide?? Answer those fucking questions Mr. GET A GRIP.
You want to believe in a miracle for GEOS..go ahead..it wont happen. You are the one that needs to get Fucking grip on reality.
You are obviously a GEOS head office stooge writing on LJ spreading misinformation and lies...which DO NOT FOOL ANYBODY.
GEOS is trying to use the same play book NOVA used back in 2007 with same kind of misinformation/lie/cover-up campaign...it didnt work then and it wont work now. People are a whole lot smarter now.
Calm down, yelling at someone
Calm down, yelling at someone does not make your point valid. You mentioned the obvious points when you could have said alot more, which seems you actually don't know more then the 2 things you mentioned.
beautifully said that man,
beautifully said that man, hay " get a grip", why don't you take your hand off it for a minute and do some fucking research and you'll realise what ill informed shit your talking

PDF announcement
So students can get 6 months' worth of free lessons at Japanese GEOS schools according to that PDF document.
Too bad if they wanted to finish their homestays in Japan (maybe they still can).
The ranting guy at 11:48
The ranting guy at 11:48 (above) had a decent post until he started whinging about "stooges". Then I realized it was just Stoogeguy & stopped reading.
And if the head office staff were "keeping secrets", how would you possibly know?
GEOS Stooge Alert!
Hey GEOS stooge....Get a goddam grip yourself! If you can't hear that sucking, gurgling sound - as Shawn so eloquently put it - you are obviously deaf as well as blind to what is happening. There is no point burying your head in the sand and living in denial - look what happened to the NOVA teachers who took that attitude!
There is no honour in just sitting on your hands and spouting bullshit for an unethical company that is going down the toilet - rest assured, they don't care one bit about YOU.
Ask yourself this : ARE you SURE that next paycheck is going to come on time? If they paid the J-staff late twice before - you guys will be next.
Kusonoki's Press Release
This press release is hilarious and is frankly insulting. A basic translation.... He offers his sincere apologies (yeah right Mr K ocksucker) and then goes on to offer a free six month English language active course.... and this is the kicker..... in JAPAN!! Why the fuck would an international student, who had paid thousands of dollars for an English language immersion programme in an English speaking country, want to come to Japan for six months?! The only "English" they would get in Japan would be from crap, unqualified "teachers" (apologies to the good ones obviously :) ) and broken, awfully pronounced "Engrish" from their classmates. As soon as they leave the confines of their poorly maintained, cost cutting McGEOS, the only immersion these students would get would be signs in romaji and the occasional annoying native muttering an "Let's Engrish togezer!" Yes, sign me up!! Does Mr Special K honestly believe this offer to be his salvation? Ridiculous.
Ok, it's free - but students pay these fees so that they are surrounded by English both at the school, at their homestay, through media, through friends they meet at the school and on social programmes. Immersion... full stop. Offering a course IN JAPAN for those who have lost out in Australia smacks of desperation/stupidity/contempt.
Can't wait for your next move K!!
Yo Stoogeguy, we all know
Yo Stoogeguy, we all know that Geos doesn't give a shit about their employees. Tell us something new.
Also, please stop crying about 'stooges', it's getting ridiculous. You're like that fat little 5yo retard I teach on Wednesdays, who passionately replies "unchi! unchi!" to everything over and over again, thinking that he's being all kinds of revolutionary and new... when actually, he's just boring.
Mr. Anti GEOS stooge
asks a good question - about payment.
But I also think anyone who asks "are you sure..." about pay checks in the current financial climate is a frikkin idiot. Don't forget that Small, medium and big Eikaiwa are going pop like bubble-wrap at the moment. The ALT companies are slashing wages (if you haven't noticed the job listings, even outside Tokyo they are offering... 220,000 a month (one for 200,000)). The ELT market in Japan is in a terminal nose dive.
When all is said and done is anyone confident of getting a pay check? Unless you have your own business. GEOS is getting all this attention because it's big - but I know of 4 schools in Nagoya to go since January. Don't forget ELS (not huge, but pretty well known) went pop with 0 notice.
No one is safe.

Im super disappointed shawn. It was fun battling trolls and trouble makers. This site was the bomb back when Nova was going under. Take it easy on the post removals. Save some entertainment.
GEOS the next Titanic (Inside info)
Listen up everyone!!!!!!!!! Straight from Tokyo GEOS the ship is definitely sinking.
Students all over Japan are starting (streaming) to demand refunds and managers pay has been delayed since the start of this year. For those of you with GEOS housing I would check with your landlords asap that the rent has been paid.
Its NOVA part two, you have been warned. This captain is not going down with the ship.
Get out NOW
Totally agree with you
Totally agree with you Worried in Tokyo!! Mr. K stole all of GEOS Australia school funds last month in a bid to improve his personsal fortune before the collaspe. He knows its coming and doesnt want to risk going down empty handed.
The writing is one the wall...Im just waiting for the finale!!
Understood. It's a fine line
Understood. It's a fine line between deciding what to keep and what to toss out.
Shawn
Worried in Tokyo, you're
Worried in Tokyo, you're wrong. Managers pay has not been delayed since the start of the year, they've all been paid in full so far. I'm a Geos teacher and haven't heard anything about students canceling contracts. Most don't even seem to know about Australia.
Thankfully I'm out of here in a few weeks. Fuck Geos...
I'm sure that kusunoki is lining his pockets, though. Fat, greasy, crooked little man with a serious inferiority complex.
My school has had a major run
My school has had a major run on refund requests in the past 10 days and we had alot of refund requests when GEOS paid teachers late last fall. All the students want to talk about in class is how GEOS is going bankrupt. Every week my classes get smaller and smaller with students failing to show up for class anymore.
I had over 100 students for myself just one year ago and now I have around 35!! The JET teacher in my school had more than 50 students one year ago and now she has around 16. Students have been canceling, not renewing, and requesting refunds on a weekly basis.
I totally agree with Worried in Tokyo, GEOS cannot possibly survive this ordeal much longer
Some schools are doing better than others, but the schools in my area have taken a major dive. Teacher and staff morale..as well, the students is close to zero. We are just waiting for GEOS to keel over and die...I wish it would just be over very soon.
Don't worry, all's well at GEOS
Anyone who says that "Everything's fine with GEOS" is pulling the wool over their eyes. Things are not fine, J-staff have been paid late, and it now appears the only reason they've been paid on time since October is "thanks" to the "support" of GEOS Australia, "support" which has subsequently bankrupted themm.
I'm not saying that this means it's the end for GEOS and you should get out now, but it points to problems with their operations in Japan. If GEOS Japan survives, which it may well do, it will have been done off the back of driving overseas operations into the ground, and quite possibly illegally transferring money. I would not want to be working for a company like that.
Well let me tell you, even if
Well let me tell you, even if everyone knew that GEOS was going to go under tomorrow, nobody would leave, as what happened in Australia hasn't led to any resignations in New Zealand or anywhere else for that matter, so anyone that complains that if they had known in Aus what was going to happen they would have resigned is talking shit. Everyone seems to want to go down with the ship. I've just come back from the first creditors meeting and there was seating for at least 600, however the room had no more that 25 people of which most where staff and only 2 were genuine "creditors" which tells me that very little was owed (apart from the obvious student and staff entitlements). However, I know for a fact a lot is still owed to our school which makes me think why were all the schools put into administration, when some could have been saved. Had Mr K ockhead (being one of the 3 directors) shown any type of leadership his cash cow could have continued to be a profitable retirement for him, but his arrogance and narcissistic attitude fucked it up for everyone, I'm telling you, anyone working for the GEOS corporation anywhere should at least be looking at having a contingency plan or you will only have yourself to blame when the Titanic finally sinks. Please listen to this "notice" as this is something we weren't given before the rug was pulled from underneath us. I've met the highest level of the corporation and let me tell they don't give a shit about staff, students or anyone else who challenges them, stay at your own peril. If Australia going down isn't enough of a reason, Mr K's pathetic response today certainly was.
Looks like Stoogeguy has got
Looks like Stoogeguy has got a new shtick - working the "I'm a Geos teacher and we've had a major run on refunds" angle, which is absolute bullshit. Real Geos teachers have access to performance stats for all schools in their shisha... and the charts say that you're talking out of your ass again.
Also, teachers didn't get paid late last fall. There was speculation that this would happen and the accounting dept. notified everyone by email, but in the end they managed to pay all native teachers on time. Please don't try to pretend that you had "a lot of students" panic/cancel/have mental breakdowns over what was, at the time, a small, one off non-issue. Such hypersensitive students would've never signed up to Geos in the first place.
You really overdid it with the "students only want to talk about how Geos is going bankrupt" weekly dose of doom & gloom part, like you're all lazing around ready to die. Just ridiculous and pathetic. If you're so sure that Geos is going down, can't you just wait until it happens instead of exerting your time and effort on this bullshit? Is your bizarre grudge so intense that you're somehow hoping to influence any Geos teachers who read this into walking out or something? That seems to be your M.O, which is pathetic and sad. Your posts takes things waaaaaaay too far; clearly no idea how things really are in the schools, so any genuine teacher is going to see through you like glass.
As a genuine Geos teacher, I know things are not good. Personally, I hate the whole eikaiwa gig, dancing around like a fucking retarded monkey in order to entertain some obnoxious, spoiled, nose picking little shits. And Geos is fucking shit with their constant, pointless paperwork & 29.5 hour faggotry. But your obviously futile attempts to have some kind of influence in the current situation are just pure cringeworthy. I swear, I feel embarrassed for you... every time I spot you flailing your arms & seeking attention with one of your desperate posts, my balls shrink up inside me.
Suggestion: Drop the "major run on refunds" line and go back to playing the "you're a Geos stooge! you're a Geos stooOoOoOoge!!!" card. Better yet, just give it a rest.
Dear Anti-Geos Troll
No one is saying "everything's fine with GEOS". In fact, I don't see one single person saying that. There seems to be an extreme obsession on this website, putting in the utmost effort in an attempting to debunk the myth that Geos is 100% fine, but the problem is that no one (including current staff) is denying the problems in the first place -- hence there is nothing to "debunk". It's kind of like walking up to Al Sharpton and saying "Hey! You're black! If you think you're not, you're pulling the wool over your eyes! Don't try to deny it!!!"
Geos is not popular here, people (yes, that includes current employees) understand the problems GEOS is facing, and the vast majority of current teachers and other staff members don't particularly like working there anyway. If, for some reason, you believe that there is one single person here claiming that "everything is fine with Geos"... then I suggest that the wool is over your eyes, not anyone else's.
No one (including current
No one (including current staff) is denying the problems in the first place -- hence there is nothing to "debunk".
Not true. The above post at 11:02 gave the impression that "everything's fine with GEOS", as have other posts on here the last few days, weeks, even months, so I thought I'd just point out, yet again, that everything isn't fine at GEOS.
I don't care whether you agree with me doing that or not. My main point in doing this, having been on the receiving end of shenanigans from another school I was working for, is to warn anyone at GEOS to prepare yourself for the worst - while I'm not saying that "GEOS is doomed, get out now", what I AM saying is, get ready for that scenario to unfold.
Make sure you've got Unemployment Insurance, funds to cover your back, enough to pay for a flight home, and that kind of thing. Also keep checking other jobs and look for better, more stable work. Or even better still, get out of the eikaiwa business and into a proper, sustainable career.
That's the reality of it - Sorry if you find that hard to come to terms with.
What is 1104 actually trying
What is 1104 actually trying to say, on one hand he/she thinks that everything written on this site is over inflammatory and then on the other saying that everything is fucked, make up your mind and I'd suggest you do it quick as time is running out,
from as ex principal of an Australian school that went down without any care or apology from those who raped us of all we had, they don't care as I'm sure if you look deep enough you already know, have an exit strategy, that's all Im saying.
00:17, that's basically it. I
00:17, that's basically it. I don't want to put too fine a point on it, but it needs to be stressed, as painful and blunt as it sounds, that the GEOS top-brass don't care a HOOT about you or your welfare. Unfortunately, I think a lot of English schools behave like this - not all, but a lot of them do (I know, I've seen it first hand). You have to be aware of that fact in the current situation.
If GEOS don't clean up their act, which I doubt they will, then they'll deservedly go down. I'd advise anyone to start looking for another, better job or career. That's not scaremongering, that's common sense.
a chill pill
Message boards sure bring out the worst in people! True colors!
Seriously, some are gunning for Geos demise and others want to keep it going, but what is the difference? If it goes down, and all logic and common sense it is heading for big trouble, it is not going to be because of anything anyone says on this board. 99.9% of the blame is going to be on the shoulders of those who made the decisions that brought the company to the edge of the abyss it seems to be at today.
Face it people. You may be able to help get the word out a bit but nothing you can ever do or say on this board is going to make any measurable difference. If that is your goal, you need to try elsewhere.
A chill pill -response
Sorry but can't agree . The ripple effect of these forums is manifold:
a) Knowledge empowers.
b) The best, more mobile, teachers are motivated to move on. The College experience declines for students. Students move on.
c)Students are alerted and confirmed in issues that concern them. Have a peep at the Japanese gossip boards. Again, students make decisions that impact on the GEOS market.
d) Monitoring authorities gain an unvalidated insight into business operations.
e) Journalists sniff a story and produce.
f) The comapny itself recieves messages it may or may not enjoy.
And so it goes on. This is a new information world where enterprise reputation is not only all but is also a fragile thing.
Re: google
wow google...looks somebody touched a sensitive nerve. Being a GEOS teacher must be embarrassing for you. Dont take your anger and frustrations out on people who come on here and post facts and not their frustrations like you. Who are you some big-time pimp in Tokushima??You know everything thats going in GEOS?? NO...you are a little turd sitting in your dilapidated classroom wishing for your pathetic life to get better. You need to quit your job and go home or seek serious emotional counseling. You obviously cant handle the pressure of being GEOS teacher and face the facts of your loser existence. I guess it doesnt matter, because you wont have job in 30-60 days anyway.
yeah google, take your
yeah google, take your retarded GEOS monkey act to the nearest hello work office to get the paperwork you will need to fill out when S.S. GEOS sinks and takes you down to the bottom with it. I would make sure you are real careful in filling out your unemployment paperwork, you wouldnt want to make a costly mistake. You probably need every single yen you get for a one way ticket back home(hillbilly USA??), because nobody will hire a GEOS teacher after this debacle.
Thats correct, you wont have job in about another month or two, so why wait?? Get your paperwork in order now.
Without getting into any
Without getting into any emotions here if GEOS doesn't tank it will be the first time (in my knowledge) that an eikaiwa doesn't tank after missing ANY paydays- even if it was relatively minor or just slightly late. Correct me if I'm wrong if this fact/history is not straight. But does anyone know of any eikaiwa that survived in the long term after having even the slightest salary discrepancies? The slightest? Remember when NOVA at first seemed a few hours later than usual? It wasn't technically late as salaries still made it to the banks by the end of the day. But when they were healthy I recalled people saying NOVA pays generally came around midnight at the start of the payday. But when the money transfers came hours after midnight that was the beginning of the end.
Geos was late paying the J. staff but not the teachers? This is true?
Will Geos repeat history or defy it?
Pay
Anyone confirm that at least one GEOS Australia college had to borrow to pay wages a few months ago????
Facts please. What are Japanese bulletin boards saying about GEOS
Will NZ GEOS survive? This is a story unfolding right now - played out in a time-frame of days. A key question about reputation is just what the Japanese bulletin boards are saying. Has anyone got any translations or non-emotive descriptions of the sort of postings going on Japanese bulletin boards.? Both Eikawa and Ryugaku blogs (Also bulletin boards / blogs in Korean and Spanish/ Portugese which are concerned about study abroad. My information is that at least one Columbian study abroad agent is highly concerned about GEOS ). Real facts are needed now, not continued rantings and abuse - names of bulletin boards / blogs, URL references, description of main users and a 4-5 sentence description of the general interest and drift about GEOS in the last 10 days. If reputation management is everything, the fate of GEOS lies in the hands of the blogs - along with the study abroad agents who often manage and contribute to these. A serious limitation of Let's Japan is that it is English-centric and while it is easy for one group to convince themselves of the demise of GEOS, contributors probably see things differently to GEOS customers. It is also worth noting that most Japanese Ryugaku agents still have GEOS information on their sites. Who speaks Japanese? Portugese? What is happening in the key Korean blogs?
I know that the NZ GEOS
I know that the NZ GEOS schools currently have good numbers, but just like Australia, they too are being affected by the instability of the Japan and money is still being demanded from them to send to Japan. Cancellations are up and they don't have the money to pay back what they owe Perth (around 200k). On top of that was the fact that were connected with GMS, the accounting firm that was in charge of the Australian schools, which is in the hands of the administrators, so I struggle to see how they too will survive.
Yeah many of the schools
Yeah many of the schools borrowed money from Perth to pay wages
I'm not sure about Japanese
I'm not sure about Japanese or Korean blogs, but reports coming through today are that it is pandemonium in the GEOS branches around Japan. I've been told by good sources that students are appearing en masse demanding answers - and in some cases refunds. Good luck to them - but I don't think they will see a yen. Apparently also there has been a spate of resignations this week among key people within the organisation. Can anyone confirm or deny these reports - or is it simply the work of GEOS rivals attempting to bring the organisation down?
Pay+borrow
Oh god.
Reports from where?!
I work for GEOS, as do many of my friends, and there is nothing even approaching pandemonium at our schools. In fact, last week my school got two new students. I haven't had a single student mention the GEOS Australia situation. And, as has been stated here before, oolwe see the business stats for all schools in our area; no chaos, not even a ripple.
Now, this is not to say that things are going to stay like this, but for now our schools are alright.
Auckland agent support
I know of one school in Auckland that has received 4-5 students this week where cautious agents have diverted them from GEOS. Some of these were long term, and included one Taiwanese student as the Taiwanese agent was aware of the situation. Another school reported 1-2. I don't know about the other schools. More information needed. The pandemonium in Japan comment above seems to be malicious, but the information I am giving out is factual and logical. Why would any agent risk their reputation by sending a 6 month booking right now? Can you imagine how angry the parents would be with the agent if the school closed and the agent had known that Auckland was administratively part of the Oceania region - in the light of the 8 Australian closures? THe only logical response is for GEOS Japan to front up with the money and put out a press release reassuring the public. Suggesting that a Swiss or Colombian student jump on a plane to Tokyo to complete their English course will not go down well. For NZ to survive, it is a case of 'show us the money' 10 days now, and no sign of leadership from Japan.
wow google...looks somebody
Hahaha, I'll never understand this Stoogeguy character. He seems to think that anyone who doesn't agree 100% with his bullshit grudge is somehow an "insider" who is "defending" Geos -- which is just plain silly.
Are you so insecure that you need to constantly throw little keyboard warrior tantrums just to feel better about yourself?
If reputation management is
That's exactly what the "You're a Geos Stooge!" guy believes, which is why he's on here daily trying to somehow influence Geos teachers into jumping ship. The problem is he's trying waaaaaay too hard... and telling us nothing new. All Geos teachers know what the situation in their school is like, so to come here as an Anonymous poster pretending that there has been a "mad rush on cancellations" and that "students just want to sit around talking about how Geos is going bankrupt" is just incorrect to the point of ridiculousness.
Non-English blogs do have an influence because they're reaching out to potential customers who are doing research about schools. But for Stoogeguy to come here hoping to have some influence on current Geos teachers who already know about the situation at Geos is in is just plain retarded. Geos staff already know exactly what is going on. The fact that no one seems to be taking his repetitive pointing-out-of-the-obvious seriously and/or mocking his childish tantrums tends to result in him rolling out a stock collection of highly predictable comebacks, including "you're a Geos stooge!", "you're pulling the wool over your eyes!", "Geos doesn't care about you", "you need to get out NOW", and a few more.
Why borrow $200 K?
Back to getting some facts ... When did NZ borrow $200K from Perth? Why would an allegedly profitable school need to borrow $200 000? Can you post some document or something? Some evidence?
Man the stooge-guy character
Man the stooge-guy character is hilarious!! He`s got you GEOS turd teachers all twisted up!! You turds fall for his BS all the time! Keep it up Stooge-guy, anti-GEOS!! Add more stress these turdy GEOS teachers. They certianly cant get over the stooge-guy and his rants. Who the hell is dumb enough to fall for the stooge-guy?? Oh, wait GEOS teachers do!!
Our apologies to you folks in
Our apologies to you folks in NZ GEOS, but you are not that important in the bigger picture. It looks like you are being ignored, but honestly nobody knows a darn thing about NZ GEOS and the behind the scenes action there.
agents
I have absolutely zero contact with current agents but was involved in starting a business in the field about 10 years ago. I still know the feeling though. You collect and send big bucks from students. There is always at least a little worry every time you make the money transfer overseas.
While they pay good commissions, I cannot see serious agents wanting to send students to Geos at this point. You might make a little more, but it is not worth it if you think the school is likely to fail. It is better to send them to a safer school and not have to worry about angry complaints that could damage your image.
GEOS teachers why?
The fact that no one seems to be taking his repetitive pointing-out-of-the-obvious seriously and/or mocking his childish tantrums tends to result in him rolling out a stock collection of highly predictable comebacks, including "you're a Geos stooge!", "you're pulling the wool over your eyes!", "Geos doesn't care about you", "you need to get out NOW", and a few more.
You GEOS teachers are staring into very large gun barrel with Mr. Kusunoki preparing to pull the trigger. You can tell yourself or the outside world just how great things are at your school and lie to everyone about how everything is `normal` at GEOS and its business as usual. Thats BS.
You GEOS teachers are facilitating the fraud and rip-off of honest paying Japanese people and allow Mr. Kusunoki to stay in business longer than what he needs to be.
What keeps you at GEOS?? Is it that tough to find another job??
Whats your motivation for sticking around??
GEOS teachers should be ashamed of themselves. Let this company die.
Some people talk crap! Like
Some people talk crap! Like the guy above.
I would say most teachers are looking for jobs and
many are leaving, me included.
Man the stooge-guy character
Haha, and here we go again. Stoogeguy congratulates himself & seems to think that he's having some kind of effect.
Yeeeesss, lots of "GEOS turd teachers" are falling for your bizarre rants. That's why we're still turning up to work every day and continue to mock your desperate comments. Don't get paid, 1 month salary gone, big deal. We know the score, know that Geos is shit, and you're having 0 effect. But please continue to beat a dead horse, big yourself up, & think that you're somehow having an influence, heh.
You GEOS teachers are staring
Damn, you guys are fucking stupid.
On the surface, everything is fine. Stroll by your local Geos and take a look. Business is continuing as usual at the schools, like it or not, it's a fact. Students continue to turn up, new students are signing up and renewing, I haven't heard one single student mention anything about Australia. But despite this, no one is trying to defend Geos or claim that there are not problems behind the scenes. See the part where I said, "on the surface"? Get that through your fucking thick skulls - everyone knows about the problems afoot and no one is trying to defend Geos in any way. In fact, most people working at Geos can't stand it and wouldn't bother to defend the company even IF things were going great.
Pretty touchy google.
Pretty touchy google. Manager f-ing you on your hours?? Your salary a little lower each month?? Cant get a new job?? Stress keeping you up late at night?? It will be over soon.
Pretty touchy google. Manager
i think the post has absolutely nothing to do with GEOS and more to do with you guys' inability to read and understand some simple facts.
you are pretty dim and incredibly repetitive, you know.
Pretty touchy google. Manager
Well said.
Yeah, my posts have absolutely nothing to do with your lack of reading skills... and a whole lot to do with my awful, awful manager and lowly Geos McClown gig. Oh woe is me, haha.
exactly
The above poster has hit the nail on the head. Well said, though I'm sure our friend will chip in with yet more dross about GEOS staff deluding themselves. Also, a lot of us strive to give the students value for money, regardless of Kusanoki's actions . He's the frontman, but there's a lot of great staff at the schools who are totally committed to caring for the students and enjoy the positive feedback as a result.
The above poster has hit the

Here is a link to a Japanese forum about GEOS, and this is the tail end of a conversation about GEOS Asutralia and refunds.

In post 892 a GEOS student wants his money back and is concerned GEOS will not refund his money. He no longer cares about the GEOS Australia and connection with GEOS Japan.
In Post 893 another poster wrote that the above student most likely not get any money back, it will be like NOVA all over again.
In post 894 another post wrote, You most likely will not (get your money back)

This post is from a lady who called GEOS because she was worried about GEOS financial viability. She just renewed her GEOS kids contract for her children. When she called GEOS free-dial number a GEOS staff member told her that GEOS and GEOS Kids are two seperate legal entities with different owners and that she shouldnt be worried.
She comes on to the forums to ask people if this was true because she wasnt sure if GEOS was telling the truth.
The responses to her post pretty much tells her that GEOS and GEOS Kids were seperate entities a few years ago but they merge. The original posters asks someone to call GEOS free-dial number 0120-91-1313 to verify this. Other posters ask her to go to the nearest library or check government records. The reponses to her post were basically `get your money back`, `Dont trust anyone at GEOS`, `GOES Japan stole the money from Australia`....blah, blah, blah.....you need to read Japanese to get the juice out of these post. Most of the posts are negative and angry. BTW the orignal poster still believes GEOS told her the truth. Who knows.
You GEOS teachers are a
You GEOS teachers are a pathetic lot. Why work for dirtbag Kusunoki?? Not qualified enough to get a real teaching job?? Is ripping-off students enjoyable?? Selling is a big part of your job description and you are given several hours of actual training, including V-chats on how to trick/screw-over students into buying trashy Listening no Tatsu-jin garbage, high-priced contracts, out-dated study books. Dont come on here and take out your anger frustrations on people who didnt make the mistake of working for a criminal enterprise. You deserve to be pissed on.
That funny bunny worked as a
That funny bunny worked as a trainer at Geos after he lost his job at Nova. Now he has to come on this site to make his life seem worthwhile.
Maybe, but not necessarily
Geos is probably headed for bankruptcy. Nova flooded the market with teachers with their illegal scheme, and the market just could not support all of the competition. However, just because they paid salaries late alone does not mean they will go bankrupt. Interac used to pay employees late all the time back in the early 2000s and they then repositioned themselves and are still kicking(teachers in the head).
Funny-in-the-head-bunny
hey - the students choose to pay the money and are generally happy with the lessons they get.
you want to talk immoral? look at those fucking alt gigs. how much say does the japanese taxpayer have in that massive rip-off? i doubt it's possible to do proper language teaching anywhere in japan (compared to what i did in europe), but geos is closer than most jobs i've had here. and the alt jobs i've had (jet and private) have been the biggest wastes of time and money i have ever had the embarrassment to be associated with. don't get me wrong - geos sucks in many, many ways (that are pretty well documented here), but given the joke that is english teaching in japan in general, there are far worse jobs out there.
but why judge? times are hard and a clear conscience does not pay the bills.
and yeah - i know my geos job probably won't be paying the bills much longer either...
GEOS students getting concerned
If the Kuchikomi comments are anything to go by, then word is getting through to the students about GEOS Australia, and some people are getting concerned and looking at getting refunds. But it's certainly not a huge rush yet.
If I were working at GEOS, I'd be telling the students about the information contained in the Aussie papers - particularly the part about money being transferred to prop up overseas operations, ie. Japan. They might also be interested to know about Kusunoki's other previous tax shenanigans, and the way he apparently took undeclared tax money for his own personal use.
The customers have a right to know that the financial health of GEOS isn't good, and that the CEO has been involved in some dodgy activities. And teachers have an obligation to give them the facts on it (even if GEOS managers have told them to keep quiet about it).
How many 23 -27 year old
How many 23 -27 year old English teachers at an eikawa are going to risk their job by telling students that they work for a crook, which is true. The media isnt touching the story and I think kuzunoki will hang himself given enough rope. Japnese consumers need to become a bit more aware how they spend their money in this economic enviroment, rather than just trust each other because they have the common ground of being Japanese. You cant blame all this on Teachers or the product or put the responsibility on to them for putting it right. It is their country and their system after all and if they have not learnt from the Nova Bankruptcy then I am sorry but a fool parts with money so easily and oh boy is it so true in this country.
STOOGE GUY IN DA
STOOGE GUY IN DA HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stooge Guy is now recommending that all Goes teachers fuck themselves over by secretly hustling them into a corner & encouraging them to quit/demand a refund.
I have absolutely no idea what is going on at Geos. In fact, I'm not even in Japan and know less than you. But nonetheless, please follow my advice. Uh.... please?!!!!!!!!
How many 23 -27 year old
How many 23 -27 year old English teachers at an eikawa are going to risk their job by telling students that they work for a crook, which is true.
It depends how big a pair of balls you've got. And even so, what grounds would they have to fire you for pointing students to stuff that is already out there and freely available in newspapers and on the Internet??
Your managers would probably try to scare you out of doing that by threatening action against you. When you think about it though, there's nothing they'd be able to do to stop you.
You forgot the part about it
You forgot the part about it not being their responsibility, Anti Geos Troll, please read properly!
Give Kusanoki enough rope...
Unfortunately it looks as if he'll take a lot of people with him when he does.
You guys are absolute fucking
You guys are absolute fucking clowns with your childish half-assed scaremongering act. You know nothing and are simply pathetic.
Responsibility? Eh?
You forgot the part about it not being their responsibility, Anti Geos Troll, please read properly!
It's got nothing to do with it "being their responsibility" to clean up GEOS or not. If I was at GEOS and was watching all this news coming out of Australia, I'd feel inclined to tell students what's going on, especially if students brought these things up in class. That's a natural thing to do - if, as it appears, the big cheese Mr K has taken money out of GEOS Australia accounts, then that's of BIG CONCERN to GEOS Japan students because:
a) It shows that GEOS Japan is having trouble meeting its expenses
b) GEOS Japan and Kusunoki are prepared to use students money for purposes other than for which it was intended (English lessons), and not give them their money back
c) The CEO of the school they're attending has, and possibly is, acting in an extremely unscrupulous manner
For those reasons, I think that if a teacher wanted to tell students about what is going on with GEOS Australia, they'd be perfectly justified in doing so. And as I said, all this information is out there and available to read, so there'd be no grounds for being disciplined or sacked.
I'd be inclined to talk to
I'd be inclined to talk to students myself, before quitting. However, this stuff about 'no grounds for being disciplined or sacked' is misleading. Chances of getting sacked are high, whether there are grounds or not. People should know the score before they do what they do.
GEOS have to have a justifiable reason to fire you
However, this stuff about 'no grounds for being disciplined or sacked' is misleading. Chances of getting sacked are high, whether there are grounds or not.
I don't think there'd be any grounds for getting sacked. They have to have a reason to dismiss you, they can't just boot people out because you did something that happened to annoy them that day.
If you were telling students inside information about the company for example, then that would probably be a breach of your contract and they'd censure you in some way for it.
However, to at least direct students to websites like The Age, or the Australian, where there are news articles about GEOS that anyone can read, in the "public domain", or videos about it that have been posted, then I don't see how that can be grounds for dismissal.
Even openly talking about it, as long as you don't say anything that isn't already out there in the news, then I don't think they have a case against you.
Bueller Sensei's Day Off
And meanwhile, as the company is crashing and burning and people like Kusanoki are looking to blame someone other than themselves, they can say, "Well, we were doing fine but the foreign teachers we hired unfortunately turned out to be pondlife with as much professionalism as a mosquito." Smart thinking there, Luke.
I started The Post @23.50 and
I started The Post @23.50 and I think that the students/consumers of the product need to be more astute when signing eikaiwa contracts and ask questions ,such as,
When was this book printed?
Where are my fees held over the 6-12 months the contract runs?
where can I get independant information about this company?
Etc.....................
This is what I would do or many other posters on this site would do when spend a large amount of cash.
Anti Geos Troll thinks eikawa Teachers?Geos Teachers are low lifes and other words used ti describe them but when it comes to informing the students/consumers he thinks it is their responsibility. Make your Mind up!!! They are not here to right the wrongs of a crooked Japanese CEO, that is the Japanese people and the way they uphold their business ethics is up to them.
What is to Stop Geos Saying you forgot your Jacket, You spoke about inaproprate topics in class, your classes are boring etc and fire you. quite leagally.
