According to an article in the Tokyo Shimbun, statistics for Tokyo show that there were more than 140,000 consumer consultations, a 4.4% increase compared to last year. Consultations about refunds and contract extensions involving long-term services increased sharply, with NOVA and the bankruptcy and closing of esthetic salons at the top of the list. Consultations about foreign language conversation schools, nearly quadrupled to 3523.
It's not clear how many complaints were specifically about NOVA, but the increase in numbers suggest that NOVA's collapse has had a lasting effect on the foreign language-learning sector and that consumers are still mad as hell and not taking it anymore.

I have to agree with above. The courts will ultimately dismiss any charges due to lack of any concrete evidence. Its only ex-Nova drones who seem to be interested in prosecuting him...and theyre opinion isnt exactly powerful in Japan, lets face it. I can’t quite tell if you are taking the piss in your post above, but the reality is, foreign workers at Nova did very little to help the company, through tardiness, by bad appearance, by coming to work smelling like alcohol, by showing insubordination to their AT’s, by sexual harassment of customers, just to name a few “minor” problems. As a former titled instructor, I find it quite amusing, that such a lazy, unprofessional bunch of social misfits, half of them sexual deviants, now cry about the demise of Nova. You pathetic lot did nothing to save it when it was alive. You are to blame as much as anyone for it's demise.
Nova's Demise
If you worked as a titled instructor for any length of time then you were either a hardened cynic, a self deluding twerp or someone with an identity crisis who couldn't figure out what they were. That's how Mr Suruhashi wanted all his staff, whether Gaigin or Japanese and that's what he got. This is what caused a number of bright eyed young people who came to Japan thinking that they were going to learn how to do a real job into bums within the space of months. I agree that this mentality played a large part in the demise of Nova, but it started at the top and went down.
However, when it came to the important decisions like responding to a serious downturn in sales by openening up a whole lot of new schools in daft places and producing a whole lot of junky textbooks at breakneck speed etc. etc. and then watching reserves built up over years go down the plughole, Mr Suruhashi steered the ship into that iceberg that all by himself. When the ship eventually went vertical, the smart ones got out fast.
However, the revision of history which you outline and apparently support may well win the day. Damn foriegners messing up a good Japanese business.

Not sure if the first posts were sarcasm or not, but you hit it on the head. Nova instructors were probably near the bottom of the barrel, but the barrel is not very high regardless, and the best instructors in the world would not have made any real difference in the Nova system. Blaming Nova employees for its collapse is as idiotic as blaming Enron employees for that debacle. When large companies fail, it is usually do to bad management. Even if weak laws do not find Saruhashi criminally responsible, he was still an arrogant arse who ran his company into the ground with bad management and strategy.

Most of the foreign workers/teachers I worked with were pretty decent people, who were given really inadequate, bang for the buck training, and often had to work under really bad management conditions. Of course there were a few bad apples, so to speak, but you can't blame the majority of it on the teachers. That's absolutely retarded. The fact you even mention instructor "insubordination to their AT’s" leads me to believe that you were one of the company yes men who's had serious power trip issues, thus garnering little or no respect. You sound like a real Eric Cartman " Don't you question my authoritaaaaaay" type. The good AT's I worked under never really had problems with instructor insubordination because they had good judgment and people skills which were well integrated with their management skills. These types of people instructors could respect, not Napoleon types like you probably were. The bad AT's and BT's I worked under really liked to throw their weight around and took advantage of what minuscule amount of power they had been given and generally were the source of low moral at the branches they lorded over. Many teachers requested to transfer to different branches because they were stuck with power tripping AT's who made their lives miserable. You sound like one of those tools.

Now, I do think Nova's probably were lower quality than many schools simply because Nova has such a bad reputation (certainly among people who never worked for it anyway). However, the quality level couldn't have been that much lower. Besides, what difference does slightly lower level of instructors make in a system like Nova? The point being that if the level of instructors is not bringing down other schools (the competition), why should it have brought down Nova?
Blaming powerless bots for bringing down a company like Nova is just juvenile. It was bad mangagment and business stratagy. For what it is worth, I have read some of the experts opinions on what brought it down (not going to get into the details) and NEVER have I seen them even mention that in Nova's demise.
Anyway, nobody misses Nova anymore besides a few brown nosing, company jerks like yourself.

Yes, yes, I think it's a great idea. I mean, it will never happen, as the Japanese legal system wouldnt be able to deal with foreign defendants en-masse like that, but it SHOULD happen. Most of those people were well and truly aware of what was happening RE ripping off the students, as they had to fill out regular reports regarding many issues, including, I am told, students leaving, asking for refunds and why they were leaving. Im sure not all of them knew what was happening, but a good portion of them were turning a blind eye to illegalities and scams (anyone higher than AT/BT Ive been told knew all about the dodgy nature of the business dealings.)
At the very least, they could have their visas revoked and passports stamped Not to enter Japan for (10 Years)? and /or not to be allowed to work for a japanese registered company.
As I said, it would never happen, due to the lack of precedent and inability to cope with english speakers...but its a very interesting moot point.

I'm still in contact with many students, so I must have done something right in the classroom. But I know it wasn't rocket surgery.
I don't think instructors carry any blame whatsoever, for Nova's collapse, but, at the same time, I think Nova's "hire any idiot" policy bit them on the arse. I liked the vast majority of the dozens and dozens of teachers I worked with, but I'd personally hire about two of them.

Never dobbed anybody, got on well with everyone, although I had to pretend that I actually had time for my Head teacher and AAM. It was okay. It was more fun being a teacher though. I like people, not paperwork, you see, and, as a decent teacher, I enjoyed being in the glass cubicle. You, obviously were a shit teacher, but very good at working for the man. Here's what the teachers
Here's what the teachers didn't do, and what management did do:
1) Teachers didn't create a racist, illegal non fraternization policy. If NOVA had just had a sexual harassment policy, then they could have used fraternization to build lasting, healthy relations with clients, which makes economic sense.
2) Teachers didn't force staff to lie to customers who had questions regarding their contract with NOVA.
This needs no explanation.
3) NOVA lied to teachers and manipulated them in regards to health insurance schemes.
When teachers got off the plane, they heard from NOVA brass, "You need insurance. Buy ours."
4) NOVA staff would fabricate complaints to get rid of teachers, or to get out of paying them raises, REGARDLESS of the quality of the instructor.
This was a huge cause of stress for those who unjustly experienced it.
5) NOVA would sell Japanese people on the idea that they can get involved with an attractive member of the opposite sex who was foreign.

i was never a good "Nova Teacher"...(i didnt go by the book..and my "TTT" was always too high..(cuz they never freaking TALKED)
raises were never in my future in that so-called company..
BUT i did get back at them in my way by counting each and every one of my free lessons and no-shows..the grand total added up to a tidy 3 month vacation (in 40 minute increments over several years) during which i did absolutely nothing for the company but read comics in the toilet, or write folks at home..

Calling titled instructors winners is a little rich don't you think? I liked my titles instructors but I don't think they achieved anything particularly great. One guy was a tradesman in the US and then came to Japan for whatever reason and got glued to Nova. He was a chain smoker who always seemed uneasy. I think he knew he had drifted aimlessly into a no skill job and didn't know what else to do in Japan to feed his J-kids and J-wife. I have no idea what happened to him when Nova collapsed (I left Japan in June 2006 and came back to Australia to do post-grad). But I always remember pitying him, as much as I hate to say it. He was a nice guy and all and I listened to him and did what he asked. He wasn't an arsehole or anything so I never felt like I had to be defiant.
In addition, the area manage was also nice but a liar. When my health insurance ran out he called my branch to remind me about that and tried to get me to sign up for JMA. When I told him I was going to sign up for National Health Insurance at my city office (Musashino) he told me he heard of no such thing (he had been living in Japan for well over 5 years at this point). I knew he was bullshitting so I just ignored it.
But I digress. Blaming the teachers for the collapse of Nova isn't really the way to go (as many people have said above). Their hiring was detrimental to the company however and they did let some losers through (I never worked with any of these though, I liked everyone I worked with). For the teachers that did muck up a lot, Nova of course never fired them but just moved them to the Yokohama school near the station which was such a terrible school apparently that if you got posted there you would voluntarily quit soon after as it was such a nightmarish place to work. I don't think practices like this helped Nova's reputation. I agree, Nova's collapse was top down. The problems at the bottom (teacher-level) were fed by bad management at the top.

If the teachers are as bad as you say they are then why did Nova hire them in the first place? Were they incapable of hiring the kind of staff they need? If what you are saying is true then this is simply a further indictment of Nova's incompetence.
Furthermore why were the vast majority of teachers given new contracts every year? If they were so bad why were they rehired?

I'm sorry, but I take such huge exception to this comment that I feel compelled to point out that you are wrong. Frankly I can't even be bothered to sugarcoat it. You are just plain full of it. NOVA was never all that great, that's true enough. But, there were some genuinely good people working in the ranks. I was late twice in 6 years, never came to work with a hangover and only called in sick 6 days the whole time I was there. I worked hard during empty lessons, did as much as I could to improve conditions around each branch that I worked at and the students liked me well enough. And I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of instructors I have known who have come into work either still drunk or hungover, which in 6 years, is not that many. Maybe standards around the Tokyo offices were higher than those in the West; I don't know. But I think it is unfair and quite ridiculous to blame the company's demise on a few bad apples.
Furthermore, to those who have been AT, BT and AAM bashing, clearly none of you ever had the pleasure of working in Area 2 and that really is too bad for all of you, because you missed out on what could have been a great experience and overall a good laugh.
One more point; if you absolutely HAVE to write defamatory comments about people in this forum, at least have the class to check your spelling first.

The problem in Eikaiwa has always been the instructors.
You come over here, and just don’t get it. THIS IS JAPAN. It is not your home country.
You are expected to work hard and be professional, and uphold the company image and name, as if the company is your family.
You are expected to respect and appreciate the BUSINESS side of it, and to maintain professionalism at all times.
But you pack of back packers were only ever interested in a free ride, an expenses paid cruise on the gravy boat, and have no idea about business, even if it were right in front of your face. I doubt if most of you could add 2 and 2 together.
You turn up late, you reek of alcohol and cigarettes, and you sexually harass anything that has a heart beat.
Stinking of the night before, oozing perverse adolescent style hormones from ever pore, like a 14 year old boy with pimples masturbating in the bathtub, you sit on your instructor’s chair, open your mouths, vomit out English in a half assed fashion, and expect to get oral sex for it, and a pay packet.

Yep, some Nova teachers were shocking. But the most damning indictment of Nova, during my time there was that they promoted several teachers, to higher positions all the way up to AAM, who I personally heard boast on many occasions how many students they'd shagged. In their "Higher" (guffaw) positions, they then went on to snitch on, and betray their former coworkers, left right and center, and then expect some kind of respect, for their position.
A huge reason Nova teachers were unprofessional is because their so called "bosses" were a bunch of untrustworthy, hypocritical backstabbers.
Do I need to name names? I'm sure many of us can guess who I'm talking about.

ideal shifts, promotions, etc. After several employees failed to turn up for a Sunday game, he informed another teacher that he'd have those teacher's
schedules "fucked over come Monday".
Flemming Lord ("The embodiment of evil") A devoted company man and hypocrite.
Known to enjoy inquisition style interrogations (in Darth Vader's tone of
voice) of teachers for minor breaches of Nova rules. Considered responsible
for turning John Eatherly into his own little Nova stormtrooper. Alleged to
have arranged extra paid sick days (beyond Nova's standard allotment of
holidays) for a teacher he was seeing.
Randy Hunt Jnr. (Nova-whore-bastard extraordinaire) This ex-AAM had several
teachers relocated for associating with students outside working hours.
Although married to an ex-Nova student, he was conducting an affair with a
another current student at the time. Returned to the US to undergo a penis
enlargement operation.
John Eatherly (Flemming Lord's little stormtrooper) Is considered dangerous
due to his strict loyalty to the company and willingness to put it's interests
before all other's. Rumoured to have favoured certain ATs with extra travel
reimbursement and encouraged them to provide poor evaluations of particular
teachers.
Edo Fackler (Consummate bastard) Has a fetish for kites and pizzas. Was said
to have been given an entire apartment to himself, with other teachers in the
same building sharing one between three people. This arsehole likes to
make demeaning comments about people with disabilities: on his own website
(http://www.erdoboy.com/kites/japankites.htm), he suggests that "the best of
these [happi -Japanese festival uniforms] look like their design came when
paint is vomited or exploded onto the material and mixed wildly by a blind man

company you float in.
David Clayton (British AAM freshly promoted due to the unique ability of his
tongue to venture into the darkest recesses of the dirtiest Nova holes). Is
known to have a strong dislike of Americans on "moral" grounds, but has no
moral qualms about being a complete prick. Likes to chant "Nova Uber Alles!"
during breaks.
It should also be noted that back in 2000 when Clayton was an A.T.

1- Whilst not very juicy, my AM told it to me in private.
Sometime last year an Area Manager's meeting was delayed 4 hours
while everyone waited for Saruhashi to arrive. His excuse upon
arrival: "Please excuse me, I was out late last night having dinner
and drinks with Ishihara-san" (as in the Tokyo Gov.) My AM said he
and everyone were rather pissed-off but couldn't/wouldn't say anything.
2- Again from my AM. Sarumonkey annouced to the media (back in late
2003) that Nova would have a new text book by early 2004, before he
even informed education and planning, which had been preparing the new
txts for the Nov 2004 at the earliest.
3- An obeservation: in one of the Level-Up magazines last year
Sarumonkey was at the ceremony and if you look closely he was wearing
black runners with his suite....what's with that? Also Tugfist seems
to have some kind of skin disorder (could be related to some kind of
venerial disease). Oh wait I just made that last bit up, but it
doesn't prevent me from spreading the rumour in the voice room.

What happened to the Nova Reality Discussion Group?
Does anyone know what happened to the Nova Reality Discussion group?
It used to be a great place to get away from all the negativity, and to talk about how to really get the most out of Nova, but it seems like it is now shut down.
I really miss it.
Encarnacion Julia and Coburgsavoyman, the moderators, are the only two people who really understood and understand Nova, and I really miss them, and their discussion group.
Julia was the AT at Nagano, and she would have made it all the way to the top, if she decided to. Coburgsavoyman worked at Nova for eight years, and loved it.
Anyway, any advice or input would be appreciated.

Funny you ask. I was speaking today to a person, who was making jokes about that site.
She said that Coburgsavoyman and Encarnacion Julia were both head office stooges, and said that she really enjoyed how the both essentially disappeared, the moment Nova Corporation went bankrupt.
She stuck the boots into old Julia in fact (called her an outspoken, extremely arrogant retard who would not have clue, with big emphasis on “retard”, as if it had some kind of special meaning)
I don’t think they were stooges, but as dumb and stupid as head office stooges, well, may be.
The board never really took off, however, the reason being, the number of people who had anything nice to say about Nova could be counted on one hand.

From thence, Mr Dorman was regularly shat on for the next several months as he taught out a very full schedule in Umeda, begging at all opportunities for forgiveness and reaccommodation to his former role as company stud supreme. Nobody could feel very sorry for him.
Nevertheless, Mr Dorman had the last laugh, for Mr Clayton whose favorite past time was drinking out of a can in railway stations with company wannabes went on to lose all his Chu Hi money in the Nova meltdown, whilst his victim ended up in a better job, and became an overnight internet success as one of the hard done by teachers who took on Nova in the courts and won.

I was an AAM with the company formerly known as NOVA. I did the job to the best of my ability; it WAS a good company to work for, no matter what all you spineless twits say, and I was told on several occasions that I was an excellent manager. I was well respected by japanese staff and gaijin alike, as were the great majority of my fellow managers.
Personally going out and attacking people, anonymously, will achieve NOTHING. I personally know all of the managers that have been defamed thus far, along with me; they are good, honest people, some family people and all of them career minded, hard workers - unfortunately, the same cannot be said for most of the NOVA rank and file.
So, quit these personal attacks, or at least be man enough to put your names to them, so as myself and my former colleagues can proceed with legal action against you for slandering out names and good reputation.
Stop this disgraceful mud-slinging immediately, or suffer the consequences.

You might be right that some of the abuse being directed at other ex-AAMs is unjustified, I wouldn't know. I met a few of these people myself and didn't have any problems with them but I can't comment on other instructors' experiences. Defending yourself is all well and good, but what do you possibly hope to achieve by threatening people on an internet discussion board with legal action and having a go at the ordinary instructors, other than getting laughed at and bringing down even more abuse on your head?
Furthermore I think events proved that NOVA was NOT a good company to work for. You imply that the instructors were bad, but who was it that hired and trained them? Wasn't the whole Diplomat "just follow the LMP" system designed so that it didn't matter anyway if the instructors were any good or not? The LMPs certainly weren't.
A good company providing a service treats its clients and employees fairly and respectfully. Maybe a lot of instructors didn't feel motivated to do a good job. Why should they have been? The upper Japanese management held them all in contempt. As for the clients, how can anyone claim that the victims of the biggest consumer rip-off scandal in post-War Japanese history got any respect from NOVA? So, ex-AAM, make all the litigation threats you like. You might even have been scrupulous and fair as a manager. Good for you. But nothing alters the fact that you're slagging off people who got badly screwed over this time last year, and defending the company that did it to them. What's your good reputation compared to that?

Letting G.com off the hook?
Haven't heard much about G.com lately. They've done a fantastic job of lying low during the long period since march in which students have been complaining of instructor shortages.
I've heard they are promising to fix the instructor shortage in september when the next batch (or perhaps first real batch) of new recruits arrives. That's an awfully long time for students to have to wait.
They've also been subtly trying to marginalise those students who are still on the 25% deal, and with some success judging by the comments of some students I know. Now that lessons are somewhat difficult to reserve, they've changed the online booking system to favour those students currently paying 100%.
At old NOVA base level instructors hardly ever dealt directly with the Japanese management heirarchy, but with G.com that has changed completely. I've never met a more manipulative, deceptive group of people.
