CD drive stuffed? Or not?

Unread post by angryboy » Sat Nov 12, 2011 9:52 pm

Thanks as always guys for putting up with this tech illiterate here.
When I put one of my new CD`s in to download it to itunes nothing happened.Tried the other one and nothing and then
one that I had downloaded the week before and then a DVD.
Something seems to start as it makes a familiar little noise but then it stops.
Would reformatting the hard drive work? That would be a pain in the arse so is there another way?

Reformatting the hard drive is very unlikely to produce any benefit. It might be worth re-installing the driver - Google how to do it for whatever OS you have. In XP it is the Device Manager utility.

Google the exact drive model - you never know - it might be a known problem.

Is it a laptop? If so, changing out the drive (they do fail fairly regularly) is difficult. If it is a desktop, it is pretty easy and straightforward to do. The last one I did cost about 3,000 Yen. If it is a laptop, then I would suggest shopping around for an external drive.

Thanks mate! A laptop so changing it is out of the question.I have been thinking about buying a new computer but not
right now.
So an external drive would just connect straight to it and do the same job?
Owe you a beer,2 actually for the router advice

No worries - happy to help. There are plenty of external drives around which plug into a USB port and will do pretty much do exactly the same job. Something like this:

Buffalo

or there are plenty more.

No not out of the question by any means but WS is right when he says getting an external one is an easy (easier) fix. If you plan on getting a new PC sooner rather than later then yeah get an external drive.

Although I would have said try some other tests on it first. Sounds like you have itunes set to automatically import songs from CD and that's not happening. That doesn't mean the drive is shot though. It could mean that for whatever reason that setting has been changed in itunes (remembering that itunes is a POS and I lost info recently when I upgraded my iPhail to iOS5, although it should be called a downgrade cause now my iPhail is even slower than it was before, which I thought was impossible considering how slow it was before). Have you tried playing/watching media from the drive? Give that a crack first. If you can't get anything to play (obviously try different discs and even different types of discs as in both CDs and DVDs) then yeah Houston we have a problem. Although again WS is right with next port of call would be updating firmware/drives, which is really easy to do these days.

There's probably some free diagnostic software out there that will give you a definitive answer but best try the simple and most obvious solutions first.

Crappy CD players, CD-ROM drives tend to crap out when they get cold. The cold's not the problem, but tends to exacerbate the underlying problem (dying machinery). Try gently heating the CD-ROM drive (low heat hair dryer) or computer (putting it in warm room)...

Mac is quite right to say that it is worth confirming that the drive really is not working at all and it is worth Googling for common problems/solutions. CD/DVD drives have a pretty high failure rate though. Lots of cheap and nasty plastic moving parts plus inevitable wear and tear. Got through a few in my time.

I've changed out a few laptop drives (in addition to other stuff, such as backlight replacement) and it was piss easy. Just find out which screw to unscrew, unscrew it, take out the drive, put in the new one and screw it in. Is there something about other laptop drives I don't know?

It seems you are right with most laptops - thanks for that. I thought you would have to open the thing up but it seems not in most cases:

One thing to note is to search on the internet before for the correct way to do it.

Also, remember to unplug your laptop and remove the battery when doing it!!!

I think the (small) size of a laptop scares a lot of ppl. As well as unfamiliarity of where things are placed. I must admit I was intimidated the first time I wanted to open up and swap out something on a laptop, even though I had built several desktop systems before that and generally had no problem swapping out hardware in a desktop. But as you say, searching the net and finding a good how-to guide is a massive help.
