TOKYO —

Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly storing a computer virus on his home computer without legitimate cause, applying for the first time a change in the law to tackle cybercrime that took effect July 14, they said Thursday.

Under the revised Penal Code, the acquisition or storage of a computer virus without reasonable cause is punishable by up to two years in prison or a 300,000 yen fine. The creation or distribution of a computer virus brings up to three years in prison or a 500,000 yen fine.
