Anyone stream (reliably) Japanese TV stations in the U.S.

Unread post by T.D. » Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:36 am

My wife (Japanese, of course) wants to get cable or satellite so we can get a Japanese station, which is US 25.00 per month on top of the additional monthly charge for cable or satellite. Currently we stream everything through our Netflix Roku box and Hulu plus, which combined is less than $20.00 a month and provides us with MORE than enough options but no Japanese channels.

I really dont think it's worth shelling out $60-$70.00 a month just because we want ONE frickin' channel and hate cable and satellite providers in the U.S. They just plain suck.

Are there any companies out there that stream cable or satellite channels?
I dont mind paying for the service if it provides me with alot of options. Then I would buy another PC and make it a dedicated media server so the wife could watch her shows on the TV instead of the PC.

I did find Livecast, but only TBS seems to work with them.

Thanks!
T.D.

There are usually some Japanese channels (NTV, TV Tokyo, TBS etc) on TVAnts, though I can't get it to work at the moment.

There's a thing called Keyhole TV which works well, has lots of channels but the quality is barely watchable.

If anyone has any other options for live streams I'd be keen to hear them too!

Ralphie,

I was reading about Keyhole last night and every review said the same thing: That the video quality is absolute crap.

And they're right, it's rubbish. But it's better than nothing if you absolutely positively have to watch something. TVAnts was great for a while - near-broadcast quality and most of the Japan channels, but it seems to have stopped working...

I found a few sites for streaming tv stations.

http://beelinetv.com/
http://online-media-archive.net/tv/brow ... ll&sort=id
pandora.tv

There is another one that is pretty decent, I think its called "livestream".

Mrs Wiggum found this:

www.ntktv.com

Only just started tinkering with it, but it has NHK-E available for free. Other stuff you may have to pay for (not figured that out yet) but it definitely works well for NHK-E.

Couldn't you just purchase one DVD from Amazon Japan and watch it over and over? You'd get the same effect...

What kind of shows are you after? If you just want to watch stuff like Dramas etc. There are quite a few torrent sites. Try for example

http://www.d-addicts.com

I haven't had much luck with streaming sites, either they get shutdown quickly or the quality is crap.

Not sure if this is only for the earthquake coverage though.

Install sopcast. Go here: http://204.63.8.52/soptv/ Click on the channel names for live (well, delayed by about a minute) streams.

Ralph,

Do you use any other sites for watching TV, or still using Sopcast?

For J-TV? Still using NTK. You get very occasional issues with it but it's generally great. There's a chinese site if you need live streaming - I'll have to see if I can find it again and post the details...

Edited to add:

Cracked version of NTK is here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/k0q39j - all the channels for the last week available to watch hour by hour on demand.

Ralphie, I'll give this a shot tonight!

I'd like to try slingbox, but her 'rents are being a pita about that for some reason.

Ralphie,

NTK is working great! Best option for streaming to date.

Thanks for the link!

Happy to help. Hope someday they'll improve the quality of the streams, but until then it does the job better than anything else.

Ralphie,

Have you tried watching NTK lately? Appears to be down.

NTK has been dead for ages, mate. You can find many shows here: http://youtubeowaraitv.blog32.fc2.com/ but they aren't live.

Thank you Ralph. Wife stoped watching J-tv for awhile, then all of a sudden NTK was no longer working. Too bad. It was really nice.
