Welcome. I don't think there are many Japanese people posting here but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few lurking especially in the NOVA discussions.

hey!

worked round osaka for about 4 years at the place that doesn't pay you to work.

i've been doing the alt thing for about a year or so having realized eikaiwa isn't something i could do long term.

lived in japan 7+ years.

as is obvious from any of my posts i don't like capitals and think correct punctuation is just "ok".

Hello to all new folk, both to this forum and to Japan. Ensure you have a decent Armor Class, good Hit Points and a reasonable amount of gold or silver pieces, as all shall be needed here in Nippon Shire. Welcome.

Hi LJ

I made it through an ECC recruitment call today so I thought I should quit lurking & say, 'hi.'

This is a great forum: the stories & reports here turned my vague idea about living in Japan into a firm plan. So...thanks!

I'll be shipping out in a few months' time, hopefully to Osaka...

Welcome! Though this site started as a GEOS-bashing board, you'll find a couple of ECC teachers (myself included) here. Most of us are pretty content. Don't let the cynicism get you down, the first few months are fun. I certainly miss mine...

Thanks AmishChief.

GEOS bashing...that company sounds like a feudal enterprise:
“Outside of working hours, you are free to socialize with students in order to build further cross-cultural understanding”
I was scared off from applying after reading that because it sounds like institutionalized language leechery (i.e. the students are happy because they get extra time with the teachers & GEOS is happy because they don't have to pay for it but the instructors get their free time bitten into).
you'll find a couple of ECC teachers (myself included) here. Most of us are pretty content. Don't let the cynicism get you down, the first few months are fun.
I don't mind the cynicism! My picture of eikaiwa life is now less rosy & idealized that it might otherwise have been. And I'm definitely happy to be starting with ECC.

What ever happened to the good old Geos bashing? I never understood it until I worked there and tried to not be a part of the gaikokujin bubble they try to suck you into/the image they try to mold you into. Anyway, wellcome, and I hope you enjoy ECC.

Hey thanks eboli.

I got a placement in Kansai confirmed a few days ago & I'm really pleased with that. Dunno which city I'll be in yet. The placement is for late June so I've just gotta wait it out & brush up on my high school Japanese in the meantime.

Greetings All

Long time reader, first time poster here but let me get the usual basics out of the way first, I’m a just turned 30 year old male from the United Kingdom looking to gather some useful information on a possible second stint in Japan. My first tour of duty didn’t work out as well as planned, mostly due to me being a naive drunken twat for most of the time but after trying to convince myself that my love affair was over with the Far East it came back and bite me like a rabid dog on heat. I have loads of questions to ask (all in due time) but thought that I should introduce myself first.

So...umm...Hello :D

Hey Big Shanes the name. I mentioned in another post that I work the graveyard at Matsuya and collect/recycle for a living. Im ex-eikaiwa (almost 15 years) and I love to play with plasticine (do you know Wallace & Grommit?)! I think thats enough about me expect for "In this galaxy there’s a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all that, and perhaps more...only one of each of us".
I enjoy plasticine related activities.

Hi! I've just joined. Arrived in Japan a week ago, moved into my home for the next few months yesterday (Kyoto) and am signing a contract with GABA on Thursday.
Currently trying to get my head round the basics (like, how to buy teabags) and really looking forward to autumn!

Buying teabags is not that hard. You choose which ones you want, give them to the cashier who scans them and then give the required amount of money and be on your way.

Or, do what I did, give up on tea and drink coffee.

Hi LJ

I thought I should probably formally introduce myself here so here I am. For any who bother to read this, I've been in Japan for 6 months now doing the English teaching thing with ECC. So far so good, apart from dodgy doctors, dentists, Chikan and a large number of mentally insane I've come accross in my short time here things seem to be going swimmingly.

I read LJ quite a bit before I decided to take the plunge and move here and it's been a great resource thus far, so thanks all :D

Choshido Mogura!

I hesitate to go into my background due to some of the negative feeback I have received regarding my hobbies from other members and the fact that the story of my background would probably cause said others to accuse me of "bullshitting" etc. But you haven't posted a word against me so I will post a response for your benefit and not so much others who have so far put me down.

I was born and grew up in Rhodesia (now known as Zimbabwe) --- if you have seen the movie "Blood Diamond" then you may recognize the name --- my accent is not unlike Leonardo di Caprio's character although I think his take on a Rhodesian accent sucked royal balls!! After completing my schooling I spent some time in the UK, New Zealand and Australia and finally ended up here in Japan.

Hope that cures your curiosity!!

I know and have met more than a few Saffers and Zimbos over the yrs and I must agree totally. His accent was rubbish. But then generally he's a very piss weak actor and that movie as a whole was a stink-fest!

That guy is a twit and a twat at the same time. As soon as I see him starring in a movie I avoid it like the plague. Must admit to having seen parts of that Blood Diamond tho. It was on Star Channel.

Hi there

Long-time lurker here, absolutely no connection with English teaching (did use to do work as a translator though) but I did find my dentist via this forum and like to check back every now and again for any other nuggets I can glean. Maybe one day I can glean something back.

Anyway, tootle-pip

Greetings everyone. I know this thread is quite dated, but Ive just found it. Blackpassenger here, and yes, I am the author of the controversial "Black Passenger Yellow Cabs: Of Exile and Excess in Japan." In fact, its just been finally made available on Amazon Japan, and the Japanese translation is being worked on as we speak. I live in Nishinomiya, near Kobe, and have been in Japan since 2001. It would be good to hear everyone's response to the book. It also would be great if you could hook me up with an honest review. There are 35, five and four star reviews on Amazon US, but so far only one review - a five star - on Amazon Japan. Actually, shoot me an email and I will send you a free ebook. My only request is that you post a review on Amazon Japan and if you can, Amazon US, UK and Canada too.

Maximum respect to all.
