Alien Registration System?

Unread post by scanman » Sun Sep 21, 2014 1:07 pm

I am a Permanent Resident and my alien registration card expired in April, but I was told, by a local government official, even though it has expired, being a Permanent Resident I have until July 8th 2015 before I need to change over to the new Resident Card system, even though my present card has expired. Is that correct? Any information would be welcome.

The kuyakusho doesn't handle the cards anymore, immigration does
all I can recommend us that you ask them.
AFAIK you must carry a current card at all times so I'm going to assume
he is wrong.
Either way, get yourself down to immigration ASAP Nd don't risk it.

What angryboy said. Go to your nearest immigration office and they'll make an residence card for you right on the spot. You'll need a passport size photo for the card, though.

I haven't changed my arc yet either.I downloaded the application form and it has a space for a 40mm x 30mm picture.
My passport picture seems much bigger than this though.

I am also wondering if one picture is enough and is a picture from a photo booth okay?

Good point. Like the OP, I had forgotten about the new system and showed up at the immigration office to get a re-entry visa. Since I arrived empty-handed, the staff said to use the photo booth.

......good......so a photo booth is okay then.

My arc doesn't expire until 2017 but I have to switch sometime before the deadline next year. How long are the new residence cards good for?Do we have to renew them every 3 -5 years or are they good for ever?

If you ever need a passport picture, there are tons of sites that will resize your picture to the right size, then you can print it out for the regular price (20 or 30 yen, IIRC). 7/11 also has an online service that automatically does it (so you can print it out at 7/11) for 300 yen or so.

My card expires in 2021, so 7 years.

Check out this pdf.

As a permanent resident, your old ARC card is considered equivalent to a zairyu card until July 8, 2015, regardless of the expiration date on the ARC itself. I thought I had to get a new card cause my old ARC was expiring, I went to immigration, and they were like, you don't have to, but seeing as you can all the way here, you might as well.

Got my new Residency Card. Pretty straight forward. Filled out and handed over a form along with my passport, one photo and my old Alien Registration card at the government office. Done fairly quickly with no problems. No charge.

......bit of an update.

Just received my new passport.Normally,I would have to go back to immigration and have my permanent residence permit transferred to the new passport.
But,I was told when I picked up the new residence card that was no longer required. Can someone confirm that this is indeed correct?
I notice there's no passport number on the residence card so I am assuming it is no longer tied to the passport.Seems strange having completely empty pages in the passport again though.
Anyway, just tossing this out there.Any comments welcome.

Yep. When I got a new passport I went in to get my visa transferred, and they said it wasn't necessary. The zairyu card is what holds all the information now.
