Best of LJ: Your favorite posts ever

Unread post by allblacks » Wed Sep 28, 2016 7:17 am

Since the forum is so quiet, I thought we might want to relive some of the best posts on LJ over the years.

I'll start. One of my favorites would have to be in the end of nova thread. I'll try to find the posts but the God fax etc were priceless!

Good idea! I'll have to go back through the archive - there's a lot of gold in there for sure.

One that stood out for me in the sheer car-crash entertainment stakes was Niku's Girlfriend. I think it got carved up and loads of the posts were removed so it doesn't make much sense any more, but there was a month where pretty much everyone was posting with a doctored picture of his GF as their avatar. You had to have pretty thick skin to survive!

Fuck everything: I`m going to the Old Forum Archives to answer this one.

I kind of like the ones like this from 2004 where Eikaiwa teachers chatted about the melancholy nature of the "gaijin condition" (subset of the human condition). Lots of old names in that one:
http://www.letsjapan.org/archive/viewto ... f=3&t=1627

Then looking at this one I started in 2003, its not really good, but kind of makes me ask why the fuck I used to post stuff like this? Ah the age before social media, today this would at best merit a 5 word FB post, but in 2003 it was a full thread sent out to strangers on LJ:
http://www.letsjapan.org/archive/viewto ... ?f=3&t=782

And of course bitching about the shady/ weird schools out there:
http://www.letsjapan.org/archive/viewto ... f=2&t=1259

And bitching about eikaiwa bosses:
http://www.letsjapan.org/archive/viewto ... f=2&t=1257

The archive only seems to go back to 2003, but I know the forum existed for a few years before that and I think some of the really good threads from the earliest years are probably lost forever (are they?)

Not so much a favourite thread, but I used to like it when there were some ladies around. Kunikun, Randy Dickson, Raelene et al.

I remember one poster, circa 2003/4, who told outrageous stories and who turned out to be a troll. I for one thought he was real. That was prolly my first experience with a full on doing it for the LOLZ troll I think. I think his first post was something about leaving a fish or some other dead animal behind something so it would rot when he moved out of an apartment. And then not long later something about banging his GF's sister or something like that. Of course all BS. What was his name....

Looking at some of the timestamps on those old threads you posted senseiman, there were replies within an hour or two! Not days like now...

Ahh! The good ol' days. Well I was michaelschumacher [2] [3] etc. It was fuuun! You pompous jackwads were so easy to troll. I was then, and still am, a worldclass master of trollism and this was one of the best places to stir the [gaijin]pot.

Typically enough only the girls could take it without crying for censorship. The boys were narrow minded, judgmental, hypocritical and immature.

LOL! Now I remember Bochniak and nigeriannampa. Funny how censors think they can eliminate things, but they above all should know, the internet is forever. The ghost is in the machine. My alter IDs go back to the early 1990s on the text-based alt. groups and they're all still findable with a little effort and knowledge.

I don't know if you'd call it a favourite thread, but I used to worry sometimes about whether the posts on the Know an incompetent AT, BT or AAM? Rant here! thread were about me. In the end I don't think any of them was, but they could have been...

Whoa, there are some names I'd almost forgotten about in there. Some stupid complaints from instructors though. Being asked to turn up on time looking presentable shouldn't be that surprising.

YES, that's him! Cheers. In some ways, it was disappointing to find out he was a troll. If I'm not mistaken, the same guy was at least one other poster, but can't remember who.

At the risk of turning this into a "Where are they now?" thread...

Whatever became of posters like katamari and Mogura? I enjoyed their contributions.

Mogura wrote in another thread that he left Japan a while back but didn't say to where or what he is now doing. When asked, no response was given... If memory serves, he did say something about chasing Eastern European women, which may mean he is in Eastern Europe, although all things considered, I would have thought somewhere like London is more likely.

No posts to rave about, but I get the urge to look back on the old site from time to time. https://web.archive.org/web/20010220011 ... japan.org/
I started out using IBM Homepage Builder to design and create the site. Looking at the bottom of the page, we were a part of a few Web Rings. Remember those? Went though a CMS or two before finally using Drupal. Ah, the memories of managing all that stuff....

I'd forgotten about this one. Some weird stuff happened to most of us in Japan. I don't think I've seen anyone shit themselves since I've back in the UK.

Oh yeah, I do remember the old old site when it looked like that. Natsukashii.

Seeing it reminds me of the internet cafes that I used in my first couple of years in Japan in the early 00s because I didn`t have a computer then. After sending emails to the folks back home I would use the rest of the hour I paid for to browse LJ.

Actually the design change in LJ when you moved to the new look (around 2002 or 2003?) coincided with huge changes in my life. Pre-change I was single, slaving in Eikaiwa and doing the whole irresponsible young gaijin new to Japan thing everyday (sheds tear at the beautiful memory of life as it was....)

Post-change I was married, no longer working for big Eikaiwa and trying to figure out how to have a normal, stable life in this country.

Not sure if there is some causation between these two variables, but at any rate seeing the really old design does bring back memories (even though I have no idea what you had to do to run it!)

I forgot about this but yeah. And one I think ended in some combined absurdity with several other wrong things happening yet him still really wanting to try and go home with this girl who was storming off but he couldn't remember her name to call after her. Loved that.

And yeah correctly identified by Edogaijin.

I think as much as I enjoyed all of that it was kind of a tipping point. I don't think it got as out of hand here as it did on say bigdaikon but once "real" users and posts seemed dwarfed by, if not troll handles perhaps creative exercises, I think it made it less accessible for newcomers, which wasn't good for longevity.

New posters welcome! Preferably real, not required*.

Found one of my favorite ever posts...

quote="Little Johnny Frostbite"]The bad, the mad, the clinically insane, and the downright disgusting were all encountered during my Nova misadventure. And no, I'm not talking about those haunting the Voice Room. There was many an unhinged type in the staffroom also. These stories are (in)famous in my region.

*The Psycho Instructor: talked to self at every available opportunity; possessive of his nudist space (the Nova apartment lounge room); his flatmates were frequently confronted with the sight of his naked nethers draped all over the lounge during a 3am porn binge. Got transferred to another city after he left a handwritten death threat to his flatmates on the kitchen table (the former was immediately faxed to FP but the resulting action simply passed the nutter on to some poor unsuspecting bastards elsewhere). Was heard masturbating in the loungeroom during his porn marathon. Was rumoured to have borrowed money from the yakuza and that a yakuza punk menaced his Nova branch in an attempt to get money from him (this is the least likely to be true, but I know for sure that the rest is spot on)

*The Spewing, Pooing Instructor: mad woman, built like a 10 tonne elephant and fond of the drink, would often come to Nova hungover. During a kids class, she fought back the rising urge to vomit until she could hold it back no more, and while the kids were bent over their books scribbling away, she ejected a few lumps INTO her blouse (and no doubt all over her bra). This same instructor, while in the elevator of her Nova apartment in the wee hours, again after a night on the Devil's Brew, was dying to go to the toilet, so with a big heave-ho, she did a poo on the elevator floor. The floor happened to be lined with some old carpet, so when she got to her level, she whisked up the carpet, rolled it up and tossed it over the balcony. I pray that no taxi drivers were hit with the falling debris!

*The I'm-Almost-A-Necrophile Instructors: infamous story from my area. A friend of some Nova instructors suddenly died, so the Nova instructors offered to his family to clean up his apartment, box stuff up and send it home. Whilst engaged in this task, they unearthed a box of homemade porn. The deceased guy had installed a hidden camera and had filmed himself getting cozy with most of his one-night-stands. So what do you think happened? Instead of quietly paying respects over a beer, the Nova ppl rustled up some popcorn, cracked open a keg and enjoyed a video night of Their Dead Friend Having Sex With Random Strangers.

*some of the above instructors also trashed a karaoke bar which consequently banned all Nova instructors from its premises

* The Misinformation (or lack thereof) Instructors: these types always get the wrong information (the trip to that cute town up north that takes 2 hours - but it actually takes 4), turn up hideously late (or not at all), dick ATs who don't tell instructors when their welcome party is and then call them from the party saying "Where are you? I'm at your welcome party!".

I have seriously met the most weird and socially inept people while I've worked at Nova. But oh my, the memories [/quote]
