What was your family's main car when you were little?

Unread post by BergKatse » Tue Sep 12, 2017 11:39 pm

Keep it to the main car used for family transportation. Cool older brothers with muscle cars don't count.

I'll start. The first car I remember our family had was a Vauxhall Victor.

Then a Hillman Avenger.

Then a Mk. III Cortina.

*None of these are our actual cars.

That's exactly what I was thinking as I wrote the OP! :D
Even now, the wife and I drive the most boring car in the world (a Prius).

My brother's a car enthusiast, so for him, your car is a statement about what kind of person you are; it's part of who you are. Every time the wife and I buy a new car, he sneers at our sensible choices, and wonders aloud at how I could bear to be seen in such a bland, un-manly thing. I, though, just cannot see a car as anything other than a functional object - a mode of transport.

Random person: "What kind of car do you drive, Berg Katse?"
Me: "What kind? Um, it's...... blue."

Yeah, that's a pretty good reflection of my attitude to cars. They get me from A to B - if they do that then they've done their job. No more interesting than a fridge or a lawnmower. I've also had 2 Priuses - good cars, cheap to run, never broke down. I'd have another in a heartbeat.

My family had the pleasure of driving around in an Austin Avenger Estate, before upgrading to the mighty Morris Ital Estate.

Not the worlds best cars, by quite a stretch!

Fucking hell, I'd forgotten all about the Ital. What a horror show British carmaking was in the 70s and 80s - shit car after shit car. Not a stylish or reliable model from anyone.

Yeah the Ital was shite. Everytime you took a corner over 30mph you thought it might roll off the road.

And the Avenga - one of my earliest memories was doing a short journey and it conking out at the side of the road...

Wasn't the Avenger a Hillman rather than an Austin?

Yeah could have been - actually the image I googled was Crysler Avenga. I can check with the old man!

And to edit this: Whatever the car was called it was still crap :-)

Yes it was the Hillman, he just confirmed it.

I must have been thinking about my Grandma's car which was an Austin: The Mighty Austin Maxi (bottom pic obviously)

Actually, my favourite cars of the time were the Vauxhaul Cavalier - you always saw these tanking it down the M1 in the fast lane.

and the Rover Estate of the early 80s.. I'm a bit of a petrol head and remember these had brutal 3L engines and went like the proverbial shit of a shovel!

OK so have to paste the pic you want first last. haha.

Actually we had a Cavalier between the Mini and the Astra as well, I'd forgotten about that. My Mum had a Triumph Dolomite too (nicknamed the Rustmobile). My Grandparents had a brown Maxi when I was a kid - loved that car, it seemed huge compared with the cars we'd had to that point.

A friend of mine bought a Sweeney-style Granada Ghia when he got his first proper job. It was a beaut of a car, properly luxurious inside, but the 3.something litre engine only did about 12 to the gallon so he couldn't afford to run it!
