Well, there we have it, and it was compelling viewing indeed. At last, a truly close game between top-eight teams - one of the best games of the world cup so far.

So, England are out, KP must be overjoyed while Cook is probably glad to be well out of it.

Bangladesh should progress and only the Kiwis and India are unbeaten so far.

Ireland have done pretty well too; hopefully the associates will have a chance to play in the next WC.

Went to the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh games. Quite good fun.

I really don't understand how England could be so crappy...
Are they really that bad?

They're in total disarray at the moment. Badly managed, poorly prepared, the Pietersen debacle festering away in the background... What a mess.

The NZ vs SA game yesterday was pretty good. Upper hand changed several times, (mostly) great fielding by the South Africans, four(!) dropped catches by NZ, a rain delay, a nail-biting finish, and no sledging.

I dare say that both India and Australia were pleased at the outcome; surely they would prefer to play NZ than SA in the final.

It was a great match to watch. The Black Caps got across the line probably because they made slightly fewer mistakes than South Africa, though both teams did makes some critical errors (NZ with catching and SA with missed run outs).

Truth to tell, I really do think that the NZ team look pretty good. It'll just be a case of seeing how well they travel to Melbourne.

Hopefully Australia will beat India this afternoon/evening, it would be nice to see the two hosts duking it out in the final.

Well, we've got our finalists. Before the tournament, I'd have said -- in fact, I think I did say -- Australia, South Africa or India, but it's gonna be interesting to see an in-form NZ play perennial favourites Australia.

Yeah, the Indian run rate was pretty dilatory. You hear a lot about how Dhoni is always relaxed and calm, doesn't do too much good when he needs to up the ante and up the scoring rate. Curious that he didn't bother to sprint the last few meters or trail his bat either.

Anyway, as you say, we have our finalists. Either outcome is good. I'll be hoping Australia win, but it's probably better for cricket as a whole if NZ win. If they do then good luck to them.

Of course I want to see Aus win but I wouldn`t be too put out if NZ take it.They have been
the standout team and a win would be great for the same reason you say.
And they have always been the underdog but this time they are the biz.

Normally I'd agree with you blokes about an NZ win but the sort of nonsense I've seen online and from my kiwi mates, I'm hoping the Aussies give them a cricketing lesson. Sorry I know that's not the popular opinion but the way the kiwis have carried on; when they beat us, by 1 wicket almost choking in the process, they carried on like they'd won the world cup! I didn't realise the kiwis hated us this much!

It's funny though with all the carry on. Kiwis always hold themselves up as some sort of bastion of fairness and sportsmanship and so on, but for a nation who reckons they don't sledge on the field ( :rotfl: good one!) they certainly do a lot off it!

Yeah, the closer it gets and the more it is hyped up AND the more I hear Kiwis still whining about the underarm
I just wanna see Aus. cane them.
But mixed feelings after reading this.

No, it was pretty convincing. One sort of sensed that when BMac was clean bowled the kiwis lost a lot of self belief.

Australia dominated the game. For a tournament that was widely regarded as a 'batsman's paradise' the sides with the best bowlers made it to the finals where Australia had the best bowlers on the day.

Commiserations, NZ. On the up side, if the key players for the Black Caps can stay fit then this squad will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Geez, he just froze didn't he. He had no idea how to play Starc. For the most part he had gotten away with it during the tournament but came unstuck y'day. And the loss of self-belief happens when one guy is doing a job and no one else is stepping up. Not entirely accurate in this case (Williamson and Guptil had gotten a few throughout the tournament and Elliot got them home against the Saffers) but one sensed if he went cheaply/early, it could spell the beginning of the end for the kiwis.

I`m sure I don`t need to tell any cricket fan but Richie has returned to the pavilion.
Can`t imagine cricket commentary without him.

Richie's widow, Daphne, has declined to offer of a state funeral preferring a quite and private service with only close family attending. Good on her for choosing dignity over the media circus a state funeral would have undoubtedly become.

Richie will be much missed and the game is poorer for his passing.

England - absolute shite at the one day world cup - playing outdated, cautious and frankly incompetent cricket. Mere weeks later and they're playing exciting, swashbuckling cricket and beating NZ fairly soundly over a series. It's a funny old game...

Bangladesh just beat India in a home ODI series as well.

This next Ashes series might be closer than predicted.

I'd agree with all of that except the "fairly soundly" part. They were down 2-1 and were helped out by the DL method in the final game. At 45-5 you'd have to think that had they have to chase the original score over 50 overs, they may not have chased it down. Although by the same token you could argue they were on the wrong side of DL chasing 398 in the second game.

Was listening to the Switch Hit cricket show earlier today and George Dobell was saying that they were told to play the same type of cricket that they're playing now for the WC but, in his opinion (and I'd tend to agree) they didn't have the cattle to play that way. I think they're going the right way with a young group playing freely and are somewhat specialists in ODIs.

The D/L fucked us over in game 2 as you've said, and I thought the opposite to you about game 5 - the rate had it been a full game was only just over 5.5, under D/L it was just under 8. I think they'd have cruised it with that little pressure. I don't think we'll win the Ashes sadly, but the mood over here is a lot brighter than it was just a couple of weeks ago.

Who could possibly give a toss about the Olympics when there's so much test cricket on?! England and Pakistan, West Indies and India, Sri Lanka and Australia, and now South Africa and New Zealand. Good to see the "lesser" countries mixing it a bit with the Big 3.

Sorry to hog the thread...

A bit of trivia: Apparently Sri Lanka's 3-0 series win over Australia knocks Aus off the top spot in the test rankings, and now Pakistan(?!) are number one.

Edit:
I tell a lie: It turns out India are 1 point ahead of Pakistan in the rankings and as they are unlikely to lose to the West Indies in the test starting tomorrow, it seems India are tops.
