Most of the video clips I've watched that start like that get REALLY good after a few minutes.

Eikaiwa jobs contraction

Unread post by In The Know » Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:08 am

I see that lately the action on the ol' Eikaiwa forum is slower than Myth Romney apologizing for wasting everyone's time the past six years.

It's a new world for those eager young 'uns setting out for Japan right out of college for a taste of "the good life" as English teachers, before the realities of the adult world back home beckon them. Well, I'll keep checking back here....

5 months since the last post of the main page too!!

The ship has sailed!!!

Seriously, there still must be a fresh batch of eager people coming out here every year, right? Where are they? Any newbies around here?

Are the local gaijin bars in your local areas buzzing or have they all gone by the wayside? Are there only a few of us left now? (Well I went home last year! Edit: to man up to the realities of life! )!

Junken Master pretty much says it all. To think this forum was begun many years ago to discuss the eikaiwa industry and now that topic is the least-utilized segment on the forum. China is flush with cash and they have 1.3 b-b-b-billion people, so you would think the mass migration there would occur for young ESL hopefuls but it really hasn't happened. The low salaries in China must be the main deterrent.

And then there is this harbinger to quash any thoughts among prospective ESL Japan newbies who may have thoughts that Japan has "turned the corner" economically, thus, ensuring the return to the rapid expansion of the ESL bidness:

:agree:

Do you think the reason for the dormancy could be that everyone is 'wise' to the pitfalls of eikaiwa now?

That said, after watching the "commercial" I'm looking forward to this series.

It isn't as though they don't have alot to work with.

Informal observations here, but my ALT company is still recruiting new teachers from overseas and a few people in my grad school are emailing me about how to get a job in Japan.

The glory days may be over, but there are still folks who want to come over. Japan still has some appeal to certain crowd of people.

I don't know about dormant, if you check it out this place still gets heaps of guests poking about.
Perhaps shock of shocks they've started using the search function!

Could well be!

The GBU forum is also a very valuable resource for potential eikaiwa employees - forewarned is forearmed.

As LJ is not reliant on advertising revenue (am I right?) none of the posts are censored or removed to keep eikaiwa companies happy.

Looks pretty good.

I liked the tag of "misery loves company" - reminds me of Clerks.

Is it just me or did the production values drop dramatically between the Teddy Bear CM and the trailer?

Parts of that were funny, delivered a little woodenly but funny.
Sounded like it was recorded in a toilet though!?

That wasn't too bad. The Black Nikka was a nice touch, although it does make me think they have been watching too much Mad Men and/or cop dramas....

Finally got around to watching it and it wasn't too bad at all.

The commercial for the school is better than some 'real' ads I've seen on TV.

I'll stick around for the rest of the series; well worth the price of admission.

While I had a laugh at some of it, I agree it's pretty accurate, although watching the first one I felt I was watching myself at times even though I haven't worked in eikaiwa since 2001. And while I did have a laugh I can see why you'd say that if a parody was too accurate, true to life, then it's no longer funny. I felt the same way about that Chris Lilley show where he was parodying Aussies (and then later on American rappers). I couldn't laugh cause to me the characters were real, that's how Aussies are, and hence it wasn't funny.

I'm actually surprised that the people used their real names for this (Yes, I know two of the people in the video).

I pretty much always refuse to have my name associated with things.

Finally got around to finishing the series - thanks for posting 'em.

Not a bad start, but the last two episodes seemed to go nowhere.

Not a huge bucket of giggles, but not too bad either.

Like I said above, worth the price of admission.
