Ah the ever-quotable Darrell provides us with another gem!

From what I've read on here, I don't think anybody's going to be too bothered about seeing this "company" go tits up

3,000,000 yen is the money that some office workers have in the savings account. Big money for a big company?

In my opinion foreign employees in Gaba chose to be employees because they didn't want to teach. Now they have to teach again.

"Gaba would like to officially announce the merger of Tamachi LS with Shinagawa LS effective from 9/30/2010. Gaba would like to thank all the partners and instructors who have contributed at the Tamachi studio."

"Merger." Uh-huh...

They always had to do FMs and were backup if the teachers didn't show. Or, as happened to me one time, if the staff don't tell anyone that you're sick and not coming in, so then all hell breaks loose in the end with students there and no teacher (apparently the student went to the booth, went back out front, went back to the booth then finally told the staff).

If I were a gaijin manager with GABA now, I would view this new policy as something suggesting 'cash flow problems', which translates into 'unsustainable' and that maybe it's time to brush up the CV. At 7000 en/lesson in a faltering, stagnant economy, it's a tough argument to insist GABA is "fine". :luck:

From the much discussed JT article:
Gaba Corp.'s 2009 financial report shows the company is still in the red. Sales dropped 25.9 percent last year and the company lost just over ¥174 million.
Daiwa Securities is the holding company for Gaba. Rumor has it they are trying to sell the company. With a full-fledged labor dispute going on though and rulings against them from two labor commissions, and the bad financial reports I don't know who would want to buy it.

The Bloomberg Stock Quote on Gaba:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=2133:JP

Overall it's a massive decline from when they first listed it. But interestingly the share price has gone up over the last 6 months.

This could be due to having a new leader at the helm.

Gaba to be sold to Nichii Gakkan for $127 million
Nichii Gakkan, a medical / education business has confirmed that it intends to purchase shares of the English conversation school chain Gaba in an attempt to bolster its education business. The company plans to spend up to 10 billion yen (around 127 million dollars) to make Gaba a wholly owned subsidiary. Nichii said it will buy at least the 26,390 shares owned by Gaba's main shareholder, Daiwa Corporate Investment Co. It set no maximum number of shares that it will purchase.

The offer price of 200,000 yen per share is a 53% premium over Friday's close. The board of Gaba, a company listed on the Mothers section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, has agreed to the move.

Gaba operates classes at 36 locations in the nation's three major metropolitan areas and had sales of 7.75 billion yen and 596 million yen in net profit for the year ended December 2010.

Accoding to the Nihon Keizai Shinbun, Nichii is "seeking to broaden its lineup of educational services by adding programs that use the Internet to teach English. Even though its offerings have expanded beyond its mainstay preparatory courses for medical and nursing licenses, it is still struggling. The firm expects the Gaba brand to help it win contracts for corporate English training and to expand its online offerings."

Gaba was founded by Hideki and Karen Yoshino in 1995 before being sold to NIF Capital Management in 2004, reportedly for tens of millions of dollars. It went public on Mothers in 2006 with a share price of ¥276,000. The value of those shares steadily sunk to a low of just over ¥13,000 in February 2009 before bouncing back to its current ¥130,000 level.

It seems as though Nichii Gakkan has had a bit of a change of heart regarding Gaba's previous employment practices.

I think that's for one of their actual schools and not for a Gaba location.
AFAIK, Gaba only has locations in Tokyo and Chiba from their list of places:
Work area: Kanto region (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama areas)
Also, we don't have weekly meetings at Gaba.
Main duties and responsibility:
1. Teaching lesson effectively and offering attractive lesson for the students to come regularly
2. Teaching lesson by following the curriculum
3. Evaluating students properly
4. Competing teaching record forms everyday
5. Being loyal and cooperative to the employer
6. Making and submitting the report of students to improve their English
7. Attending meetings, seminars, and other activities
8. Participating in weekly staff meeting
Though it might be fun to compete for the best student records????

From the link what Prospective candidates need:

-having an interest in Japanese culture and working with Japanese people
pretend to be interested in what Keiko has to say about Japan's unique four seasons
-are able to work for a minimum of one year
You're not gonna bugger off after five days due to shitty conditions
-having excellent communication skills and are eager to learn new things
I...can...speak...slowly...all...fucking...lesson...so...they..can...understand...me.
-are patient and friendly
Not go berko when Keiko starts talking about Japan's four seasons again
-are careful and thoughtful
watch what you say about Gabba behind their backs - someone's always listening and ready to rat on you.
-are team player and proactively support others
Do what they say (includes bending over and grabbing the ankles)
-are active
act like a hyper-active monkey on coffee
-are experienced in teaching English
Can find the correct page in the text book on the second try.
Wake up, school, club activities, piano lessons, juku, [s]nova,[/s] english school, challenge school, homework, sleep, wake up, school...

Hmm, they do have schools in Chiba and Saitama. When I worked there (until 2008) there were weekly meetings (those were optional and you didn't get paid, but there was food).

The hours certainly seem to fit with Gaba's (although Gaba had a 22:00 lesson). Moreover, none of their existing schools seem to teach English - it's all distance.

Of course, I don't look that hard, but don't recall ever seeing Kanagawa or Saitama on the list.
And, now, AFAIK, only the FM instructors have a monthly meeting (and they're fairly pointless/redundant).
The job ad also never mentions the Gaba name (that I saw in my quick scan of it), and I haven't heard anything about us dropping our name...
But who knows...

A reporter is working on a story about the acquisition of Gaba at "a ridiculous valuation and it's subsequent opening of Coco Juku/Coco JukuJunior." He would like to put in touch with anyone who knows details about Nichii Gakkan, Coco Juku, or Gaba that would offer details/support before the publication of the story. Contact me and I will give you his phone number.
