Re: Pollen & Chinese Smog: any advice on air cleaners?

I ordered a Sharp Plasmacluster (without the humidifier as a friend at work advised it would be a pain to maintain and unwanted during the summer). Just under Y30,000. Gets delivered next week. Unlike the Panasonic and Daikin models I looked at, the intake air vents were not narrow & discreetly loca...

Pollen & Chinese Smog: any advice on air cleaners?

The pollen season is supposed to be coming earlier this year. And,Chinese smog has apparently already hit Japan.

I took a look at air cleaners at Bic Camera but was overwhelmed with the choices. What are people on this board using?

Puzzled about confidentiality agreement

It seems a few firms are demanding all their employees - including part-timers - to sign all-inclusive binding so-called confidentiality agreements. However, almost all of them also include non-compete clauses like this one: Non-Compete: The Employee agrees that during his or her employment by the F...

If you honestly believe that Toru Hashimoto's inquiry into Osaka civil servants with tattoos is a serious infringement of human rights, it's about as naive as equating a tiny Mickey Mouse tat with a full-blown yakuza one. And, he's not going after stupid white gaijin with stupid Chinese kanji tats o...

Re: Seen the scammers trying to sell Engrish schools?

I actually had some conversations with this school owner by email last year. I was worried about the future post Korea and wanted to go straight in to another job because I knew it would be difficult back home. His name is Joshua Jones (at least that's what he said on the email), he's American and ...

Re: What to do about dandruff?

The vinegar seemed to have done the trick. I also followed up with baking soda mixed with shampoo - it actually stung a bit.

Has the formulation for Selsun Blue changed any? I used to recall it had a terrible sulphury odor to it that I couldn't stand.

What to do about dandruff?

The menthol-based shampoo I've been using just isn't working. And, the itching is driving me crazy. I soaked a few tablespoons of vinegar into my scalp (might have missed a few spots), left it in for a few minutes and then shampooed and showered as usual. Hair is still wet and it seems to have done ...

Now, he writes about "microaggressions" in the JapanTimes. and cites a thin-skinned Chinese-American psychologist in Psychology Today . Do I bitch about getting only Y42,000 or tell them they ought to pay the full Y50,400? If that's per day I'd let it slide. Also, are you getting paid a daily or hourly rate? It was just for two days only. Anyways, it turned out they came back and offered a "training rate" for that hour of 'orientat...

Re: Nickeling & diming: how common is this?

Nah. As I indicated, it's a temporary gig - not on-going on a regular basis. And, for that reason, there is no reason for me to provide any sort of 'freebies' or 'gimmes' outside the stipulated hours. I'm guessing that both the extra hour earlier and the shortened lunch break were put in there at th...

It's actually a temp gig and you submit a timesheet. That's why the uncredited hours are a little different from regular overtime. Do I bitch about getting only Y42,000 or tell them they ought to pay the full Y50,400?

Nickeling & diming: how common is this?

What you're told: from 1000 to 1800 [ 7 hours with one 1H unpaid lunch break]
What you discover: get there from 0900 for 'orientation', lunch is only 40 minutes and eat it with students, prease.

The difference is only 1H 20 min but still ...

Even though they lost the case, by threatening instructors who joined the union with their highly unorthodox Y100 million lawsuit, Berlitz has probably successfully intimidated most other employees who may be considering similar actions against Berlitz. I'm a bit confused - the "offending" kids in the OP simply indicated that the boy had a "foreign face". They recognized something was different from the norm. They didn't use any sort of racial epithet or slur. Aren't we going a bit too far with this insistence that kids commit to these politically-...
