I have been playing that a good bit at home. (I think I'm more than halfway through.) I can also post from work, though, and I can't play VC there.

Well, quite. Cos you know, only people who are geeks play video games . Vice City is the game the otherwise feeble PS2 will be remembered for. However, 'Doom' is still the best game of all time IMO.

No, technological advances don't guarantee a game will be the best, but they certainly open up the possibilities. Probably with RPG or strategy games it won't matter so much, but I don't play those. Action games, such as sports, driving simulators, and shooters, OTOH, just continue to get better, and no one in his right mind would seriously argue, say, that Pole Position is the best racing game ever.

Companies are spending as much on games and having nearly as many people involved in making them as they would to produce a major movie. There literally wasn't anything like Vice City a few years ago. I'm sure something will come along and surpass it soon, though. As technology develops, the possibilities available to game designers continue to grow -- that's what guarantees that no one program will hold the title "best game ever" for long.

I don't have any figures to back this up, but I'm pretty sure that GTA3, and maybe GTA: Vice City, are the top selling Playstation games ever, and probably amongst the biggest selling video games ever too. We must be talking tens of millions of copies worldwide, right?

Then why has no-one in Japan heard of it? Why the late release (we're talking years of late here, too)? I can appreciate that many J-gamers wouldn't 'get' Vice City cos of all the 80s American pop-culture references, but still...

I have this same reaction. You can dis the PS2 all you want, it still gets all the games (the reason I have one, oh and I can play DVDs on it).

Well - newer games aren't better games IMO. For me Half Life is still nr 1. Ok - maybe newer ones have better graphics but most don't have much plot at all..........

I was just glad that it actually did get released here. For a long time, I thought it never would because of the violence. (Yes, I'm aware of the irony inherent in that statement when referring to the home of tentacle porn.) I still remember when they pulled "The X-Files" off the air here. Following the 1997 incident in Kobe in which a 14-year old murdered and decapitated a younger child, it was revealed that, in addition to having some severe mental disorders, the 14-year old liked watching "The X-Files" and playing video games. Some people (who obviously had never seen the show) started complaining along the lines of, "Violent TV programs and video games are to blame." So, in midseason, "The X-Files" got yanked off of TV Asahi or Fuji TV or whatever broadcast network was showing it. WTF!? It wasn't as though Mulder and Scully went around shooting people.
