Job anyone?

Postby allblacks » Thu May 13, 2004 12:59 pm

This wasn't "GOOD ENOUGH" for a friend of mine. If I have to teach English, this is what I would "settle for" in the future:

FOREIGN LANGUAGE LECTURER.
Ten 90-minute periods/week. 350-420,000yen/month.
Teach EFL (the particular courses for which the
lecturer is responsible will vary but will generally
be concerned with developing students' communicative
competence, especially in spoken English); teach
short, intensive courses during the summer and spring
vacations and during other periods if necessary;
liaise with other language teachers, produce teaching
materials, and offer students study guidance;
contribute to curriculum development; participate in
workshops for faculty members; and carry out such
other tasks as directed by the Director of the
Language Centre. MA (or equivalent) in TESOL (or
related subject) and two years experience teaching
English required. TESOL certification, materials
writing skills, and an interest in curriculum
development preferred. "Japanese ability not required,
but the applicant should be willing to learn."
Sponsorship available. Accommodation: A furnished
apartment is provided, and the university subsidizes
the rent to the amount of 50%. Paid holidays and
health insurance. Traveling expenses paid at the
beginning and end of the period of employment to and
from Osaka for applicants from outside Kansai. (In the
case of airfares, economy class). Application deadline
26th May 2004. Position begins April 1, 2005. One-year
contract, renewable up to three years. Apply by fax or
e-mail with CV/resume, letter of application
summarizing suitability for the post, and list of
relevant publications. Contact Professor Toru Miyake,
Language Centre. Momoyama Gakuin University, Osaka.
1-1 Manabi-No, Izumi-shi, Osaka-fu 594-1198. Fax
0725-54-3283.

Gotta agree with Phonics on this one. Seems like way too much work for not enough money.

Subsidized rent, too. Whoo hoo. Let's see, a nice apt in Setagaya Tokyo goes for 10 man a month, so let's use that figure for Osaka as well. So they pay half. 5 man. Oooh. Ahh. And I don't see the mention of any bonuses, either.

Doesn't look like I'll be moving back to Japan to take a job like that...
All those people killed in shootings in America?
Oh, shootings, yes. But that doesn't mean Americans are more violent than other people. We're just better shots.

Lets not use that figure too Diogenes. I lived right near that University and know what the rents are like. An example? http://rent.realestate.yahoo.co.jp/chin ... 3901&img=1

So you see Osaka in NOT like Tokyo at all. Especially in THAT area.

"One-year contract, renewable up to three years. "

It's a temp contract.

In 3 years you'll be unemployed. Probably okay for a newbie that is in town for a short while. Otherwise, I'd tell em' to f :wnw: ck off!

"participate in workshops for faculty members"

You have to give FREE eikaiwa lessons to all of the J-teachers.

"teach short, intensive courses during the summer and spring
vacations and during other periods if necessary"

That one sentence contains the biggest load of cr :poo: p in that job. You have to f :wnw: cking work during the vacations?

Your friend is smart AB. That job may look good at first, but after reading the detail, no f :wnw: cking way.... You will be someone's bitch the entire time.

Nah my friend is just lazy. He doesn't want a job. He wants a free ride.

I thought that this one was okay: I would do it if I had an MA, too bad no one else sees it as a meal ticket. Of course, you could always work for Nova and get even MORE screwed.

"You will be someone's bitch the entire time." Show me a job where you AREN'T someones bitch!

Uhhh. I'm the head of my own department of two.

I's got biotches!!

Regarding that job: good for a short-termer, but these J-Uni 3-year gigs are just another way to keep the brothers down!

:bird: 'em!!!!!

I wonder if that school is on Debito Arudou's black list.

Sorry ... I'm too lazy to check.

Hey, maybe not. That school seems to be 'up-front with you'. They are basically telling you that you will be one hard-working gaijin monkey temp ASS employee. Those on Debito's Black List are usually the jobs that advertise or have stuff in their contracts that are contrary to what is actually the case.

I think if you were the final candidate, you could 'negociate' the work conditions. After they inform you that you got the job, make some 'changes' in the contract shortly before signing anything. They will surely change things rather than go bother a bunch of professors to 'vote' on someone else. So, in a sense, I believe the job isn't something that you can disregard totally, for a newbie that is.

As other people have said, it sounds like a lot of hard work. But the pay is a bit more than what I get now.

Fair enough - I just wanted to use that example as a 'worst-case' scenario for how much the school would be bearing. I noticed from the site you posted that rent's only about 6 man a month with mngmt fee - so the uni's only fronting 3 man....

By the way, interesting new avatar. Now only if they had Kiwi smilies...
