Why do Salarymen get such a bum rap?

Postby coffee_bear » Fri Jun 11, 2004 11:50 am

I often wonder why we gaijins rag on the ubiquitous salaryman so hard and so often. Is it fair? Do they really deserve the shit we heap upon them? More to the point do they even know how thourghly they are ridiculed? Do they even care?

What do you all think?

Because they're fucking boring, they smell like shit and we have to teach them.

It always seems to be the drunken salaryman who wants to talk to you on the train, never the drunken office lady.
But just as in any case, it's always a few clowns that make the entire bunch look bad. Look at Nigerian Nampa's story about the salaryman who took his money to buy some smokes.
At Nova it's better to be a high profile shit disturber than a low profile bootlicker.

Your salaryman will lie, cheat, steal, or worse, and offer himself up to be the victim of those same crimes for the company. Over time, this will become the only bond between him and his workmates. He'll then apply the screws to any new recruits to get them to commit the same crimes and be part of the brotherhood. He'll neglect his family, beat up his subordinates, be beaten up by his boss, and live his life in fear that if he doesn't take it happily, deal it out happily, he'll lose money. Without money, his wife's got no reason to stick around, so he'll lose his family. Without his family, he'll be a social outcast. Welcome to the blackmail that is your life.

Sure but without them companies that manufacture bad toupees would all go out of business.

being only a "salaryman" isn't cool.
I would rather date an engineer, graphic designer, etc.
Are there any "salarymen" out there?
Most that I meet end up with really cool titles like "Head of Sales" or "Overseas Division Section"

Hell, if you think about it, most of us would be "salarymen" (well, in my case a cute "salarywomen") After all, my company does give me a salary (a larger one than that of "ordinary" salarymen)
