A Castle Built on Sand Part 3
Part 3 of the FujiSankei Business i's series on the rise and fall of Sahashi.
The end of the fairy tale success story
The generals jump ship and the fairy tale success story comes to an end
With the success of the business, Nozomu Sahashi began to surround himself with the trappings of the company. While this was going on, student frustrations erupted over how refunds for contract cancellations worked to NOVA's advantage. Loyalty was out the window, his generals were gone, and the fairy tale success of NOVA began to crumble at its foundations.
"That one, that one, and that one," was how Sahashi picked out his secretaries from a pile of photos of new employees spread across his desk. They all had the model look--tall and thin. "He terrible at mixing is public and private affairs," recounts a former director. "There was even a category in the hiring criteria called 'flowers.'"
At the ceremony to celebrate the listing of NOVA's stock in 1996, Sahashi surrounded himself with his young female staff as he rang the bell at the stock exchange. "He never called a single board member. That was the moment loyalty went out the window," recalls the former director.
From that time through to 2004, senior members started leaving. "The expansion was out of control and the organization began to disintegrate," says a former employee.
By 2005, NOVA had rapidly grown to 480,000 students and nearly 1,000 schools. But there weren't enough instructors, and complaints about not being able to book lessons came in one after another. With NOVA losing the battles in the courts over the way it calculated refunds, NOVA's rebuttal was, "This makes no sense, we created our refund method based on the guidance from METI and the Tokyo Metropolitan government."
"At least let me stay in business." In 2006, with the company in the red, Sahashi trotted out the often-heard platitude: "You won't get more instructors until business turns around," while instructing his staff to tell the students the white lie that NOVA would be increasing the number of instructors soon. However, the days of glory were gone, drowned out by the rumours from of the staff.
NOVA hired 1,000 new employees fresh out of university, but a mere 10% of them stayed on for 3 years or longer. Finding work was a seller's market and an executive at a NOVA affiliate points out, "The quality and cohesiveness of employees degenerated." Sahashi himself is said to have yearned for the days when he knew the name of every employee.
After METI sanctioned NOVA last June, Sahashi sent a hand-written fax instructing staff to "be strong." As the pay delays continued, it did nothing to stop the revolt from growing. About a month later, Sahashi helped himself to the employee's welfare fund for which he was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement. Sahashi believed he could save the company and tried to raise money up until the very end, but the foundation had already crumbled and there was no avoiding collapse.
【砂上の楼閣NOVA】(下)私物化で消えた忠誠心
FujiSankei Business i. 2008/7/3
Sahashi's rise and fall has all the makings of a movie: An idealistic man with an idea who parlayed it into money, women, and power, only to lose it all due to hurbis. It makes me wonder if the FujiSankei Business i had Shelley in mind when they were writing their stories.
OZYMANDIAS
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Percy Bysshe Shelley

He's a decent guy who tried
He's a decent guy who tried hard to save your asses. Maybe he made some bad decisions but it was for your own good. Cut the guy some slack and let's show some support to the man who gave you a life in Japan.
Anyone with me?
Sorry but can't agree with
Sorry but can't agree with you mate. He could have done a lot more but instead chose to try to save his own ass, money and reputation. Most people would want todo the same but when you're the president you have to look after employees and customers first and not take advantage of their good faith. Many good people lost a lot of money and even their chance to live in Japan. Saruhashi was just too arrogant to sell or give up control. Again most people would probably want to do the same but it becomes immoral and even criminal when you go as far as Saruhashi did. He doesn't deserve any slack after all his lies and the way he deceived everyone involved with nova. He's a criminal for stealing employees money, deceiving investors, students and employees and for ruining so many people's lives. Throw the book at him and let him pay for his misdeeds.
fear of exposure
I think he was afraid of giving up control because his dodgy dealings would have been exposed. He knew NOVA was screwed without a tie-up with another company but surely that step would lead to the new company taking a closer look at the books. He took the gutless, selfish option which bought him some time and let the company die. So much for the great bushi reincarnate Saruhashi claimed to be.
satire
I sure hope that is bad satire "sorry but I can't agree". I sure hope a fellow human being is not as stupid as you appear! If you are serious, you remind me of the bushbots back home defending Bush on Iraq and everything else.
Please tell me you are not one more of those total knuckleheads who put loyalty to government, religion, company etc. ahead of all logic and common sense!.
wow are you fucking retarded?
wow are you fucking retarded? you must have been one of the drones that stayed with this shit ass company to the very end. the first time I saw a late paycheck by 3 hours I bolted. I now make 3 times as much as the guy who trained me. Meanwhile I heard most the green tags i knew are crawling the streets of osaka - desperate for work over 14 yen an hour. yeah what a great guy he was....such a humanitarian... so compassionate.
Im With You!
im RIGHT behind you HT..
with a BAT.
Support. Okay...
"Maybe he made some bad decisions"
MAYBE??????????? SOME??????????
Oh my, the laughing, the pain!!!
Droves of friends of mine in foreign countries have left for their home countries.
Heaps of Japanese staff working for free for months.
Years of working for a BS regime with a BS boss.
I don't care that he started the company. He ended it, too. With his megalomaniac antics.
How about this for support?
When he passes, I'll learn where his gravestone is and piss all over it.
Former Head Teacher, you are
Former Head Teacher, you are a current Head Case.
Stop revelling in your past glory of being a "former HT", who licked asshole of Anders Werewolf, Edo Faustficker, and Lord Fleming, etc, and willingly sucked cock to get your 1 or 2 man payrise per month.
Get over yourself and wake up. Ass Clown.
I am with you. Sahashi was a wonderful and fascinating man.
I am with you.
Sahashi was an international humanitarian, philanthropist and visionary, who dedicated his life to bringing the world together, and enabled hundreds of thousands of young western adventurers to enjoy the experience of a very different culture and country, “the land of the rising sun”, right down to picking them up at the airport, putting them in fully furnished apartments, and giving them a very easy, well paid job.
Let’s not forget the miracle opportunity he gave thousands and thousands and thousands of us, through shear determination and generosity. I am with you. I stand by him. I do. I really do.
Sahashi’s only crime was that he did not see the world economic downturn coming, making the consumers all the more concerned over money, and what value they were getting for their money, and he did not realize the market for language products was so limited. He thought it was much bigger. His other crime was simply that he was “eccentric” and liked pretty women. So what. All geniuses are eccentric. And 99.9 % of men like pretty women.
He is a wonderful man, and was a wonderful leader, and I thank him immensely for the wonderful opportunity he gave me to live is such an otherwise very different and difficult culture and country, and I feel very indebted to him.
I stand by you Sahashi, and there are plenty of people out their just like me.
was he trying hard to save
was he trying hard to save our asses before or after he took rent money without paying leases, took insurance money without paying insurance, and took employee welfare money?
Truly an altruistic bloke who cared for himself last and his employees first. Its a shame how unappreciated such a legendary humanitarian like saruhashi is now.
Those of you who jumped ship just so you could get paid at legitimate jobs and not be kicked out of your housing due to inability to pay rent...you should be ashamed of yourselves how dare you put your basic needs before a great empire like nova and an even greater fallen king like saruhashi!
Give it a rest and show some god damn respect
The man is a living legend. A genius. He bought two worlds together, and had a vision and a dream, and hundreds of thousands of happy, vibrant, young word adventurers, who were privileged to have lived in and who enjoyed Japan, owe this man, and owe him dearly.
How dare you stand around, rubbing your hands with glee, waiting for the man to be torn apart, when he enabled countless numbers of you to live in intriguing and wonderful Japan, a place you would have otherwise never stepped foot in.
If it were not for the Meti intervention, caused primarily by militant Union activism, you would ALL still have jobs now.
All you could think about was yourselves, and having better chairs, and more holidays, and more, and more and more, and well, now you have NOTHING.
It is a shame there are not more people like Sahashi. The world we be so much of a better place.
A place of international friendship, exchange, and communication, where boarders no longer exist.
This, this was the dream of Sahashi, and it is disgusting that you all now turn on the man who provided you with so much.
Boarders
Well, he was certainly successful in getting rid of all the boarders.
jon
ok, let's pretend you're serious...
yes, "young word adventurers" "would have otherwise never stepped foot in" japan if saruhashi hadn't erased the "boarders." damn that "militant Union activism" rather than pissed off customers.
"All you could think about was yourselves, and having better chairs, and more holidays, and more, and more and more, and well, now you have NOTHING."
well, actually, we just wanted what the LAW said we should have. but since you don't like unions, you don't mind an employer running roughshod over you. as for having nothing, speak for yourself. dick.
BWWAHAHHAHAHHA!
thats too funny man.
actually to be 100 percent truthful...i have little against Monkey Man..hes a parody of himself with his office and his atrocious Asian fashion "style" straight out of a Jackie Chan movie..its the Gaijin bootlickers and middle management cronies that get most of my ire.
i EXPECT idiot rules that make no sense from Japanese people.
it GALLS me when people who come from countries that supposedly have their heads on right, become Japanophile lackies and corporate climbers.
they were and are the kind of folks who one morning wake up with a grenade in their boot..
Leave Sahashi Alone !!!!!!!
Every now and then, for unanticipated reasons, a bright and shining star falls from the skies above, to be seen no more.
Do people then say, “What a horrible bright star that was, and I am so glad it is gone”?
Think about this deeply my friends. Think about it deeply.
Instead of spending your time rubbing your hands with glee, cheering, and shouting, as Sahashi is crucified on a legal cross, take time to remember those funny moments during the crazy rush between lessons, that delightful little child who could grasp the basics of English better and with more enthusiasm than most adults, and who loved YOU as their favourite teacher, the great times socializing with fellow Nova workers at the local bar, the extreme excitement of your first night in your Nova apartment, all of your complete Nova experiences, and then feel free to clap your hands as the curtain finally closes on THE MAN, the genius, who made it all possible.
To Sahashi, I commend you, I applaud you, for keeping the Nova dream alive for so long, and for providing the Japan experience for so many countless thousands of us.
I and others, will be there, at you side, as you endure and suffer the humiliation of an unjust legal system.
We will support you. We will miss you.
But most of all, we will miss Nova, and we thank you for the international experience and friendships that you made possible.
You....LACKEY
Before I MacDonaldized the Eikaiwa business, Japanese people were throwing Ten thousand yen bills at foreigners, just for an hour in their company. And I PUT A STOP TO IT!
No, I didn't make wonderful things possible, I pissed and shat, all over Eden. I didn't mean to, I just wanted a bigger piece of cake than anyone else. But, sadly, I've fucked it up for everyone.
Still, I have the comfort of knowing that the Lackeys went down with me.
Still rubbing my hands with glee...
Hope they execute the prick!
He lied, cheated, and stole from a lot of students and staff.
Hope they execute you too for supporting him. Removing your genes from the pool would be great for evolution.
My Boots Are Covered In Sarariman Vomit..Would You Lick Them?
while those things you mention were nice..and i made some great friends there..
the cunts who ran it tainted it with their micromanaging bullshit..
and your King Monkey STOLE money from us and lied to our landlords..and did not obey the law of the land by providing us with health insurance.
On the button
"its the Gaijin bootlickers and middle management cronies that get most of my ire"
Amen to that
Hairy Gut Hole!
youre welcome
Mistranslation?
I think there is a mistranslation
業績が好転しないと講師は増やせない
"Business won't turn around unless we get more instructors,"
Should be
"You won't get more instructors until business turns around"
Am I correct?
Correction
You know, I think you're right. Thanks.
As to the comment about the articles being thin, I would agree. There's nothing in them that's new, although I didn't know Sahashi had his eyes set on a bank.
The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them. -Albert Einstein
To the 1st comment
to the guy who made the first comment, are you related to "monkey bridge" hence, you are defending him for his stupidity????
Ironic
How ironic is is that all those Nova executives were clamping down on teachers with the "non-socialization policy", threatening you with the sack for meeting a student outside class, where at the same time, Monkey Bridge was choosing his secretaries by their looks, link meat at a butchers
What a joke he is, and what a joke are those who toed the line
I think it's nice that this
I think it's nice that this piece is out there for people to read, but I find it to be quite thin; I already knew most of this information. I'd love to see something, perhaps a book, going into more detail about the companies rise and fall...
...as long as Surahashi doesn't pocket any of the money from it.
I agree with the "Ironic" comment
I agree wholeheartedly with the person who wrote the "Ironic" comment. Nova was so obsessed in preventing teachers from socializing with students but the president chooses the sexiest secretaries, and at the same time, Nova was too stupid to realize that students fraternizing teachers was a good thing because it brought more business!!! Speaking as a teacher who got screwed over with Nova's bankruptcy, I hope Sahashi goes to jail and gets raped a new whole in there !!! But as much as i would like to see Sahashi go to jail, I don't think the Japanese system is going to do much. I mean, it took them almost one year to arrest this guy and the japanese gov't hardly did anything to help the foreign instructors. Sad to say, but since the wheels of justice turn very slowly, I really doubt Sahashii is going to face any jail time.
He will face time. I think
He will face time. I think the Japanese legal system has been working slowly, but well. Many instructors believed that we wouldn't get our government reimbursement of our wages, but we did. Many instructors also believed that we would be screwed out of our unemployment benefits - didn't happen as far as I know.
Landing Surahashi in jail will take time. There are probably paper trails going in every which direction that have to be accounted for, and prosecutors may want to be careful in assembling a case.
He is a great man and we
He is a great man and we shan't see the likes of him evermore. O, dark fortune that hast brought down this monument to free enterprise; like mighty Samson, eyeless in Gaza.
I, for one, am proud to be a loyalist as is my hag girlfriend. Nova, whatever it's incarnation, can do no wrong.
MESSAGE TO ALL
I would greatly appreciate it if people refrain from using my name (as your name) on these pathetic comments regarding NOVA and its aftermath.
Shame on you all.
AL
stop trying
I would greatly appreciate it if people would stop leaving supposedly satirical posts in the name of Saruhashi, Lundgvist et al, period. 'cause they aren't funny at all.
If you really feel the need, stop trying to be funny, and start being funny. Please.
"It's saturday night and I've been drinking so don't quote me on this shit."
Blow Me, boozerloser
Don't quote me either. I'm diabetic.
Then so are you!
Didn't it!
CHOOCOLAAATE!
funnier
well that's a better excuse...
haven't you.
(get me another beer lungy and earn ya feckin' keep) toka...HOHOHO
