30 Schools to be Reopened

The Asahi Shimbun has reported on the potential list of schools that will be reopened by G.Communications. Here is a translation of the article:

Nova's plan to reopen 30 profitable schools

The Asahi Shimbun has obtained internal documents that show that Nova drew up a list of 30 schools that it wanted to keep operating based on their profitability. G.Communication, which will take over part of Nova's business, it believed to have used the list to determine which schools to open, and it is likely that these 30 schools will continue to operate. The majority of these schools are in Tokyo and the urban areas of Kansai, but the fate of other schools remains unclear.

Nova created the list after deciding to massively restructure the company. More than half of the schools (16) are located in major cities. By prefecture, the list contains nine schools in Tokyo, four each in Osaka and Chiba, and two each in Kanagawa and Aichi. Nova planned to shrink the company down to 200 schools, but this did not include schools in the cities of Nagoya and Fukuoka.

The list was based on a school's annual profits, the amount of the shikikin deposit that would be returned if the lease was canceled, and the cost savings associated with closing a school. The list was narrowed down to 30 schools based on this criteria.

The schools that were chosen had profit margins of 30% or more, hoshoukin deposits greater than ¥50 million, large numbers of students, and were operated efficiently.

Of the 30 schools, Nova and the landlords are said to have agreed to continue the contracts for the ones with leases.

In a press conference on November 6, G.Communications announced that it would take over the operation of 30 of Nova's approximately 670 schools, by transferring them to a subsidiary company, with plans to expand the number of schools to 200. The 30 schools will be selected and reopened next week, and are believed to be based on the list and Nova's plan to reduce the number of schools to 200. It is likely that after further study by G.Communication, it will decide not take over schools in suburban areas and leave them closed.

What about what the President of G communication said in the mainichi yesterday???? According to them, he said he wanted to re employ all Nova staff, was that some kind of sick joke or what???

What about MM Centre? Is that classed as a branch? MM was NOVA's unique selling point - reaching out to students potentially anywhere in Japan. The rent in OCAT building is obviously huge but couldn't the company relocate its' operations to another (cheaper) part of town?

what about kyushu? they'll put 1 in okinawa but not a single branch in kyushu? that can't be right!

The reason why they're opening Naha Main Place is because it has a very high profitability margin and runs the largest kids school in the country.

Anyone been asked to come in to work for one of these 'interviews' that have been talked about? Has anyone heard from their AAM??

Nova site has just announced that the above list of schools to be reopened is a load of bollocks.
Those of you who were building up your hopes....put them on hold a few more days. Japan Today said G-Comm had narrowed it down to 150 schools and would make the final decision early next week. It's pretty sad when the national papers can't get it right.

According to the email my AAM just sent me and from what i have just read on the Nova website, all employees are are going to be rehired on their old salaries. New instructors are to get some kind of financial help. There is a big management meeting in Osaka tomorrow. There is also some information regarding the seminars and interview locations that we will all have to go to over the weekend. According to the Nova trustees we are are going to have to wait a long time for back pay as that is down to the government agency. Now this would seem to go along with what the G comm president said in the mainichi. But i have no idea how this is possible and given the hell we have all been put through in the last few months, this all sounds rather to good to be true (in that it's about the best we could reasonably hope for). Anyone got any explanation or is the website not telling the truth and is head office speaking out it's arse?

i (used to) work at higashiura shopping centre (one of the schools to "reopen" on this list) but haven heard squat from anyone. WHO is going to contact me about my old job? will i get preference over the over 4000 who's schools aren't going to open?

what a bunch of arse.
